I like the part where he sez we try not to get excited about fins....... Who is he kidding? If there is one piece of dive gear that gets more hype-hoopla-hulabaloo over nothing its dive swim fins. Anybody who dives regularly, I'm not talking the annual resort dive for the tourista, knows this. Dive shops have racks of crazy, gimicky, overpriced crap fins with outlandish performance claims that don't work, are a pain to carry and just grind your muscles and joints for multiple decades now. You will notice the same dive shop owner and instructors just use trusty regular sensible fins..... no hype. He does mention free diving and those would be crap for scuba, but still.

Adding retract rings to a canopy can be expensive depending on who does the work. You can deploy a spectre set up for CRw with a standard D-bag no problem.

Sounds exactly like what you should do. We really need some footage of a real spin and not just footage of tumbling poor airmanship ( that we've all experienced from time to time) . That spin talk scare people and needlessly so.

Then stop being lazy and find the other outside videos of flat spins on SM.com. We've only discussed this topic for about the last 6 years, some of the threads you've posted to in fact. Flat spins can happen and the earth really is round, whether you believe it or not. I have searched most of the SM WS videos and still have not seen a true flat spin. You are right I have been posting my lack of faith that they exist for years. You can call me lazy but I just don't believe you..... and I'd much rather just post pics of my -new to me- SM1 under the pic posting protocols set forth by BDrake. Feel free to slap a Campos on there. Don't be lazy

Please do. I've got tons of video of head down carves, arched half loops with continuous heading changes, tumbles and take outs galore. I'm looking forward to seeing a video of real death defying flat spin in a wingsuit. The kind that had plenty of wingsuit people scared to try new stuff for years.

Not even remotely a flat spin of any significant centrifugal magnatude but thanks for posting it..... next When I think of flat spin I'm talking, like I experienced without a wingsuit, a dizzying but constant turn rate that locks your body flat and prevents recovery.

I've never been in a flat spin in a wingsuit but I have been in a flat spin on my back, hands out above my head in free fall that I purposely induced very easily. I tried to ball up or just arch and could not, any attempt spun me up faster. it sucked up a lot of altitude...... later on the ground some Aff instructors said the right thing to do is get into a delta or introduce some dis-symetry to my body. When all of the hullabaloo about wingsuit flats spins came out I tried to induce one at altitude to investigate recovery procedures but was never able to get into one in a wingsuit. I remember how hard it was to ball up, near impossible. Not sure I'd recommend balling up as a recovery for a wingsuit flat spin. But I'm no expert. I've tried to get into a flat spin in a wingsuit and couldn't. I've never seen one live or on video so don't have any second person data to extrapolate from. I have been in a couple of side spins while in a fetal position on exit that just wanted to spin faster, once I opened my wings they stopped and I flew out of them.

Are you sure thats the lesson? How about the fact that balling up while spinning was next to, or in your case, impossible. And this is the defacto escape maneuver for a flat spin as per the wingsuit instructors. I'm not saying that flat spins are all that prevalent in wingsuits just that balling up might just be the wrong thing to try and do.

Sounds like an adventure on top of an adventure. Could not get the time off work to attend myself. Curious, why bring demo suits? You'll be busy with the bigway mission.

The pics here seem to show that there is a somewhat for lack of a better word 'attached' flow. Norwegian Windtunnel pic here Kris You know what tuffs used in the aero dynamic sense are right? Set up your wingsuit with some tuffs of a contrasting color to your suit. Make them long so they can be seen and have a friend fly video for you in the real world, which is real different than pitch posing in a cramped tunnel. You will see how detached the flow is . Just don't put them by your hackey.

What I find most funny is that relative to anything else that flies, both our "floating" and our "flying" are both crap. A glide ratio of 1.5:1 vs 2.5:1 is not really a world of difference. Both are pretty much "falling at an angle"... no bird or pilot would describe either as "gliding." We are massive air deflectors at best. Sounds like you are having a bad day or hanging out with Yuri, which would explain. Nothing a few Atmonauti couldn't cheer you right out of.

It all started a long time ago when designers thought it would be nice to have a fareing to smooth the contour of the squarish rig back down to the body. Patrick even did it with a pillow that straps on to the bottom of the container......... miss rigging it into parts of his main canopy creating a horseshoe mal is what killed him. if you have a voodoo the teardrop shape fairs itself and you don't need suit ass-pouch anymore.

Hehe, sometimes it's nice to be small. At about 5'8" and 145lb I could average mid/high 30s for an entire dive in my relatively tiny winged phantom, and I'm sure there was more to come. Sold it to an even smaller friend and he was getting 3+mins and 40 averages after about 10 jumps. Can't imagine having to strap on the mountain of fabric that is a Mach and not even get that level of performance Your configuration might have a disadvantage in penetrating as well as somebody who weighs a little more. Float you will but you might not as easily win any speed comps and you may have trouble catching a flock that is way out in front, unless you fine tune those ninja skills to compensate....... Like everything else in life its a balance.

I assumed that we were speaking in the context of the OPs question of how does he get to 50mph or under? Quote To the original poster 50s are not bad in a skyflyer. I struggled to get floaty and below 50 much for a few seconds. What I did do in the skyflyer 3 was travel faster forward at the descent speed of mid 50s. I'm 200 with gear and 5'9". Some guys got slower than myself but most that could weighed 20 pounds less on average. I soon stopped looking at the numbers and just flew the suit for distance.

why does one have to be an experienced BASE jumper to figure things out? Solos are the best method to figure things out in skydiving, don't you agree? It takes a little bit of repeated exposure before new BASE jumpers relax a bit, no? If you live near a tremendous object and can hit it any time weather permits and have many exits from that location and have become familiar then test away in as many jumps at the same object. BTW tremendous objects mean long hikes or some driving or helicopters if you are lucky. Skydive solos are not so good for fine tuning, there is nothing to benchmark off of. Which leads you to rely on electronics with at best snap-shot info with huge latency for feedback. They are fun but anybody that primarily does solos typically has huge skill gaps ( at least initially) when it comes time to join a flock that is actually flying efficiently. This has been our experience. You need a known and familiar base to fly off of. Hopefully one you've flown with for hundreds of jumps. You can test for 2 minutes plus in as many times per day as you can turn the load. And of course sluggish flocks that are flown at the bottom of the envelope to allow lower skilled or smaller suited flyers to join in are not good for upper envelope practice but they do offer feedback on staying stable when flying sloppy.

Hilarious! Thats why I always wear protective gear. Don't dress for the ride dress for the animal frenzy attack. Although once I had a small spider sliding down a web inside my helmet while I was on a high speed sweeping overpass turn. They look real big when they are that close.

It would make it easier to get up to the fixed object. The reality of it is mollar has been ripping investers off with nothing but a pipe dream for decades.
