  1. Rotating? No. But, should you theoretically be able to have next year's Thanksgiving or Christmas off if you are an employee in good standing and have asked for one? Absolutely. My problem is that your inquiry comes at 3.5 months-in to a job you admit you want temporarily. If you already know it is temporary, do you not think those who hired you do? Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  2. I worked holidays (small salary, largely commission-based) straight out of college for a couple years and I was their top-producer. Forget time-and-a-half which my position did not qualify. I had to sit there all day on the holiday for the fuck-of-it. The economy was awesome then. Animal hospital? That was my first-ever job. Cleaning cages, washing & walking animals and picking up poo--I worked holidays because the animals do not just go to sleep and wake up 48 hours later. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  3. You have worked 3.5 months as of today and you are complaining about working the upcoming holidays? You have worked 3.5 months and are already asking for time-off for the holidays next year? How long have you worked anywhere? Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  4. Also for the animal-lover: Dog Lovers Wine. P.S. There is also a cat lovers, horse lovers and nature lovers wine club, all supporting animal shelters and rescue groups.
  5. This thread is open to all your gift ideas that "give twice". With the tough economic times, donations to charitable organizations dwindle. Every year, my goal is to give a little more than the previous year to the various organizations I support. This year, I will--thankfully--be giving what I did last year, but I could not help but think what else I could do. It occurred to me, I already had ideas of things I wanted to get my hunny and friends and family for Christmas. Why not see if I can purchase those items through a vendor that supports those organizations? I know a lot of DZ.comers support Best Friends Animal Society (as do we) and I have to say I was impressed with some of the options in their store. I bought the fleece jacket for myself pictured on the home page of The Best Friends Store. It just arrived, along with a few purchases for friends and family. Use this space to share gift ideas and places to go to purchase gifts that "give twice" this holiday season.
  6. That sounds wonderful! I LOVE projects like that. Whether it is recipes, or photos, or memorabilia, I can not stand boxes of disorganized stuff to store; I simply won't do it. It is a downward spiral, imo. For anything worth keeping, I get creative and make something (like a scrapbook) that is easy to store/display and a lot more personal than a box in the attic. The recipe binder is great because rather than have 10, 20 or 30 recipe books with only a handful of recipes in each you want to try/much less actually like, you have one binder that you can easily remove something you have tried that didn't work, and create your own sections for things/ocassions personal to you. I also love labeling, so the binder gave me another excuse to do that. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  7. I have one giant binder I filled with clear sheet protectors and dividers for recipes torn from a magazine, printed from the internet, or hand-written on a piece of paper. I love it, because we only save the ones that we love. Over the years, it has really filled up. Other than that, just Roy's Fish and Seafood.
  8. I admit, when I read "bloody trousers", my first thought was "why did you put on bloody trousers?". (I understood the intended-use of said term "bloody" a half-second later...) The frightening part is my first thought was not even why they were bloody in the first place. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  9. Context clues are clearly not your friends. Even I figured out the question by his response, and I'm just a silly blonde. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  10. Clicky I agree with the run/walk method. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  11. We seem to have a TON of marathons where I live (at the beach) and I have friends who--while active individuals--do not train and just do them for the sake of timing themselves and comparing to their previous year. They are typically sore the next day, but seem to fair well... If you are capable and you want to--try it. If you are afraid of injury, don't. I run two to four miles, five days/week. I do not care to run more than six miles. If my friend who never runs wants to run 26.2 and be sore for the next few days, but have bragging rights, more power to him. I never did understand the need to push oneself to unhealthy limits no matter what the cause. I prefer to pay NOT to run. Thankyouverymuch. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  12. I tend to naturally "outgrow" things and figured this was my last season of Survivor. Last season was fairly boring and this season has been even more so. I have been fast-forwarding the majority of each episode... This episode (11/5) renewed my affinity for this game. I LOVED it. I have not been a big fan of Russell's, but I loved his reference to Babe Ruth. It seemed ironically humble* of him and extremely self-aware. I do not think he was "dumb" for playing the idol as is referenced in the preview for next week's episode. *The irony being Babe Ruth_is_a great so it is just like Russell to compare himself, but his point was more about Ruth's record strike-outs. Is this about Rush Limbaugh (R) delivering the speech inducting Neal Boortz (L) into the National Radio Hall of Fame? From where do you draw such a conclusion? I ask as an independant voter who is not a closet Republican. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.

  15. I have to assume you consider my surprise at hearing a "shout out" in the beginning of his address as bashing Obama. I give shout outs. I like the president gives them here and there. It was inappropriate in this scenario and made the president seem irreverent "during a tragedy like this one". Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.

  17. I just watched President Obama address the incident live. Just before, it was resported 12 dead, 31 injured. Why did the president begin his statement with what looked like a dim smile on his face while he gave a "shout out"? I would not have thought twice if he thanked the man for being there, without the smile. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  18. It's like anything else. I am a fair-weathered woman. I enjoy too many things to do any one thing when the conditions are less than awesome. I golf when it is neither warm, nor cold. I skydive(d) when it was neither windy nor still. I surf when the waves are right for me and there is not lightning. I find the conditions are always perfect for something I love to do. 19. Which ones? A couple brief statements about the segment: --"Women's values" do not equal "liberal values" which seemed more like what Bill was touching on when he remarked women's values are taking over America. --Indoor cat lives longer. --There is no smarter sex. Bill's point here goes back to the "sensitivity" issue he addressed earlier--has little to do with feminism. --The idea of having breast implants gives me the heebie-jeebies. I do not even know if I would want them should I unfortunately maim or loose a breast someday. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.

+1 I used to want to really swim with sharks for enjoyment--not out of conquering a fear of being eaten by one as I do not see that as being a remedy. I still think it would be an experience of a lifetime for me, however, I do not support tourist excursions to swim with sharks, go on cage dives or anything in-between. The sharks become less afraid of humans as they become more used to us, and often to attract sharks for such tourist attractions, they chum the water--so not only are sharks now comfortable with humans, they now associate us with food. Awesome! Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  22. I will change it after tomorrow but... Coincidentally, I just realized the Halloween-themed avatar I switched to for the day was taken at an event for a local organization I support that funds college scholarships for "underprivileged" kids that work hard and do well in school. I like that my support is voluntary. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
  23. I have been on several cruises with my family. My opinion is they are more for the vacationer looking to really relax. On a cruise ship, everything comes to you. You have a ton of options in a relatively small area. You visit multiple cities and countries without the hassle of packing, unpacking, flying, etc. I am all cruised-out. I prefer to visit one place at a time and really get to know it. I.e. get the locals' advice on the hole-in-the-wall secret spots. You do not really have time for that on a cruise when you port in the morning and have to be back at the ship by a certain time in the evening. If you have not done one, though, I would definitely say give one a whirl. Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
