  1. It wasn't as windy as last time I jumped, but close. I learned a lot and I plan on having a question and answer session with my instructor about wind. It seems like somethings just don't sink in the first time. So far, the process of learning to skydive reminds me of many years ago when I learned to drive, especially driving a standard transmission. It waasn't nearly as easy as it looked. But I did learn and I will learn this too. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490
  2. Not yet, but it's on my list of things to do. It's amazing how even though I've been told something and read something, it takes the real thing to make it sink in. I do plan on another discussion about how to deal with wind, in the air and on landing. It does make me more understanding of when my students don't "get it" after I've explained something. I would liike a jump or two without the unexpected learning opportunities, but if that's the way it goes, oh well.
  3. Well, it's a lot harder to find the DZ when everything is covered in snow, but it sure is a beautiful sight. My altimeter got covered by my jumpsuit sleeve and an instructor pulled for me while I was trying to figure out what altitude I was at. My freefall stability was great and I had another learning opportunity supplied by the wind. I ended up getting blown beyond the landing area and when I realized I was about to land on a road, decided the neighboring field instead. Oh, yeah, there are power lines along roads. My foot had a minor encounter with one, but alll considering, I managed to flare and PLF without radio assistance. They couldn't see me to tell me what to do, so I just did it. ONe other thing, when your shins and sagebrush have a confruntation, the sagebrush wins.
  4. Nope, I went and jumped out of an airplane instead. Woohoo. It's sure harder to find the DZ when everything is covered with snow, by the way. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490
  5. There's a reason I was a math major I hope it can work in. I think you'd probably enjoy it. The wind has been interesting there. Every jump has certainly been different. I learn new stuff every time. Yesterday's was something along the lines of----You don't have to do the whole landing pattern. The final leg would have been just fine --There are power lines along roads....keep one's feet up the next time --When your shins fight with sagebrush, the sagebrush winsI could use a little of the heat out there right now. It's certainly nice and cool. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490

  10. Yeah, that does pretty well describe most of Idaho!!! "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490
  11. I think that's part of what drew me to math. Writing classes drive me nuts. No matter how well written I thought something was, the prof could always find ways to pick it apart. Sciences classes are my next favorites, any of htem. I had never had physics, so I took a physics class this last quarter. It fwas a survey type course and ocused on the concepts rather than the math which i could already do. Exploring the ideas behind modern physics was particularly fascinating----relativity and so on. Is physics in you future? Where do you jump, by the way? "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490
  12. College does seem to be a series of hoops, at least until you get past the general ed requirements. Once I got to where I was just taking upper division math (and French), I felt like I was in Nirvana. Well, not quite, but I loved taking math class after math class. I didn't care if I ever used anything I was learning at that point. It was just fun. Yeah, my students think I have a warped sense of fun, too "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490
  13. Thanks for the offer. I hope I can take you up on it one of these days. I'm goig to be on the east coast twice in the next year on work related travel. Maybe I can figure out a way to tack an extra day onto my trip to DC next November. Where is the outdoor center at? There are definitely some beautiful parts of this state, especially the mountains in the area about 70 miles north of where i am. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! 14. Nice website. I think the transportation costs would add a little too much to the price. [big sigh] I guess I'll just have to be patient. The weather generally starts getting pretty decent here by sometime in february. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490
  15. I hear much of this kind of thing too often. Gee, and we wonder why there is so much out-sourcing. (Yeah, I know $$$ are involved too, but...) I try to do my part in developing some kind of work ethic. Instead of actually collecting homework, I do daily homework quizzes where during the first few minutes of class, students copy 2 problems from their homework for me. If they aren't there, tough. If they are late, too bad. It's a little idea, but I hope it helps get students headed in the right direction. That should be a great trip with your daughter. My dad drove Greyhound bus, so business trips with him weren't very exotic-----bus depot, downtown SF----
  16. I looked it up in the booklet i got when I joined. It is 3213 "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490
  17. What you say makes a lot of sense. Besides, skydiving is exciting enough without seeing and setting up expectations for what can happen. I do work on arching/relaxing at home as well as lots of practice visualizing the coming dive that we discussed after my last jump. Now if the weather would just cooperate, I'd get to try out what i've been working on. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490
  18. I thinking I am pretty fortunate then to live here in that case. My instructors have been around for quite some time and really seem to have my welfare in mind. They also seem to really enjoy what they do. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490
  19. I grew up and lived most of my life along the Pacific Coast. It's only been in the last few years that I've come to appreciate desert scenerty. Here it's just high desert and not nearly as picturesque. The sunrises and sunsets are often fantastic anyway. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490
  20. That's sort of how I have been doing things. I've pretty much only watched tandem videos for the most part. My curiosity has definitely been curbed. Thanks for the post. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490

  22. Well, I'm not sure that was the greatest choice of vidwos to watch for me, since I've only got categories 1 and 2 done so far. Release dives next and then........... It was a relief to see the instructor catch up with her though and get things under control. Whew!!!!! "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490
  23. i really don't stress the math. I love teaching and teaching math is pure gravy for me. Try teaching GED in a prison!!!
  24. Hi, I'm teach everything from pre-algebra to calculus. I'm teaching the calculus sequencet at TVCC this year so my knowledge is pretty current. if there's anything i can do, let me know. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490
