What age did you start skydiving?
grannyinthesky replied to GoRdOn8619's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
i'm a little bored this morning so I was searching and found this. I was nice to see that there was someone older than me (57) when they started. -
I didn't listen very well, anyway. There's some in the fridge now waiting for after my jump tomorrow. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490

"Regularity" of Jumping Question
grannyinthesky replied to BerryBoy's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
No, I hadn't thought of that. I know it would really be better to be able to jump more often, but I hadn't considered that before getting started here (I prepaid my first 16 jumps to save a fair amount of money. I figured if I prepaid, neither of my kids could come up with an emergency that would need the money, or if they did, it was too late). Can we say impatient? It looks like it going to work out ok. I'm scheduled again on Monday, and now that i only need one instructor, that will help too. Warmer weather would sure be nice, but I won't have that here in Idaho for a couple of months. Thanks for the idea though. -
Can I really not skydive

You can search the forums for information. You might start here http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?do=search_results&search_forum=all&search_string=weight%20limits%20and%20AFF&sb=score&mh=25 "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490 -
Being pretty new to skydiving, it's pretty hard to think about goals in other areas right now, but... Play my sax well when the I play with the college jazz band in February Publish the calculator skills workbook that I signed with a publisher to do De-clutter my house. I think skydiving is going to take precendence over the Christmas craft kits, scrapbooking and assorted stuff I was planning on doing once upon a time. "Regularity" of Jumping Question
grannyinthesky replied to BerryBoy's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Is there one big enough? During my FJC I wondered how you could ever miss the great big student area we have. On my last jump (#3), I found out it's pretty easy to miss. Canopy control is definiitely a challenge for me. During freefall the instructors are right there with you and able to really help a lot. Once under the canopy, other than some radio help, you sure have to be a lot more self-sufficient. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490 -

"Regularity" of Jumping Question
grannyinthesky replied to BerryBoy's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I can understand that feeling so well. I did a "one-time" tandem October 7. My thoughts went from "I could do this again" to "Maybe a tandem every year on my birthday" to calling the DZ to find out about training, all in the space of about 4 hours. With winter weather being what it is, I should have waited until spring to start, but there was just no way i could bring myself to do that. And, I've decided if this is CRAZY, so be it. It's waaaaay too much fun. I have had to deal with weather cancellations and instructor availability on a regular bases (only 3 jumps since the weekend after Thanksgiving) and it does seem that not being able to jump more often makes it a lot harder to learn. I suspect the experienced jumpers are going to have a lot to say about 2-3 months between jumps. Two weeks is a lot for me. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! Welll, it took a little longer to get here than I expected. Even Gandalf and Bilbo couldn't save it! "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490

I'm playing lead alto saw in our college jazz band. I hadn't played jazz, or anything else since high school until a few years age. It's great to be back in music. It was probably the thing i'd missed most from high school.I also play clarinet and sax in the community wind symphony, but the jazz is by far the most fun to play. After the landings i've had so far, learning to PLF better is high on my list. But I really would like to stand one up someday. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490

There are handhelds there and they are generally sitting on the rack. I used the wrist mount sereral times with no problem, but..... The instructor said he'd never seen that happen before. Lucky me!! I jump at a small DZ, so there isn't a lot of choice in jump suits, small, med, large, sl. Being short is the problem. I do plan on talking to him about several things, the sleeve thing, reviewing wind issues, recognizing obstacles, and a few others. I'm working on a list to take with me next time. It's funny, he asks if I have any questions, (just like I ask my math students and get a sea of nodding no's), but I don't realize until after I have one of those moments, that I should have had questions. Amazing what hind sight does for you! I do find myself getting more willing to ask as time goes by. It's beginning to sink in that I would look a lot less foolish in asking a "dumb" question, that when I end up,,,,,well,,,,doing "dumb" stuff......like staring at part of the altimeter while he pulled for me.

Yep. I definitely plan on that. There are some other altimeters i can use that will put the altimeter on my hand instead of my wrist where the sleeve can get over it. That's not going to happen again for that reason at least. It seems there is always something. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490

Thanks for the advice. That occured to me afterwards. I have since remembered being told and reading that if you don't know your altitude, PULL. I know it would be better to remember the first time, but I bet I'll remember what to do if in doubt of the altitude next time.

Welll, at least it is my own thread I've hijacked I've been getting the idea that it does take a lot of experience. It's really a change of pace for me to be learning something that doesn't come to me instantly, like math. I really like the challenge and the experiences of freefall and under canopy time are so incredible. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490
