    That's a great frustration for me as a teacher. Sometimes I know that what I'm seeing on the tests is not what the students are capable of doing. I have started giving two parts to each test (at the pre-calc level and beyond). One is the traditional in-class stuff, fairly straight forward, no applications. Then I give a take hone part that is primarily applications. It seems to be working well and I think it is appropriate for what you would do in the real world------Look things up and research to get to the solutions. I can generally tell when students have worked together and it doesn't seem to happen often. The two parts carry equal weight. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!!     Have fun skiing. I've never tried that....yet.....I know it's going to be really cold tomorrow, and if I'd had any sense, I would have waited until spring to start learning to skydive.......but, I seem to be a little short on good sense lately.     Yeah, it's Cessna 182. It still seems really small to me. I did my tandem out of a nice roomy Caravan with a big door. I don't think I'm quite ready for that diving exit yet, but it has a certain appeal. At least I wouldn't be worried about slipping off the step. It strikes me as being a pretty irrational fear--to worry about slipping off the step I'm going to jump off any way. It's the same 10000 feet.     I think I've got the glove part handled now. On my second jump, one of the TI's there insisted I use his gloves----Seal Skins---They are a little spendy, but they really work well...warm, flexible and good grip.     I agree. It would be fun, but I would settle for being able to convince 100 of my students that pi is not 3.14 I'd probably give it a try anyway, but I'm teaching Calc II this quarter for the first tiem since grad school, so I think I'll have my hands (and head) full.
