How did you're first Hop & Pop go?
grannyinthesky replied to Sletzer's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Well, the second one was good, but the first one...... not so good. I was a lot nervous, spotting for myself, one of the first times I was jumping my own pack job, no instructor on the plane, three people waiting to exit after me..... I managed to forget to arch off the step (C-182) so that made a mess of the exit. I didn't really realize how much time I had (exited at 5500 feet), so I was somewhere between on my side and on my back when I decided to pull. The opening was ok anyway. All in all, pretty much a mess. But I went up the next day and did it again and everything went like it was supposed to. Whew!! "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! ;6;0 Finally, good weather and plenty of jumping. I had a great time, but I sure didn't know how tired jumping can make you. What a switch from only getting a jump every few weeks to 6 in one weekend. Wow! "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490

And you don't even need to buy it. You can download it from the USPA website. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490

when did start skydiving
grannyinthesky replied to kscott904's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
No, not necessarily poor when you first start, but you get that way fast as I am learning. I just started skydiving in October with a tandem and then started AFF in November. I finished AFF Sunday. I am a bit older. I'm 57 and getting younger every jump I make, at least mentally. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490 -
Welcome to the world of being a student. Isn't learning new stuff great. I finally got to jump and passed AFF. Your turn is coming. There are some great jumps ahead for you. My last two jumps were diving exits and rolls and loops. Great fun. Thanks for sharing your story. Pat "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490

Freefall - how does it feel....
grannyinthesky replied to buba07's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
When I was a kid, I used to throw toys onto the roof so I had an excuse to go up after them. Boy, would I have been in trouble if my parents had known it was on purpose!! Then somewhere along the line, I started not being very happy about heights, including ladders. Since I started skydiving, the old feelings are coming back and I don't mind climbing ladders like I did. But if I don't start landing better, I may develop a real dislike for those last 10 feet to the ground. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490 -

Ummmmm, What a nice description. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490 -
Thanks. No there aren't many skydiving grannies, or at least there aren't many who wait till their 50's to discover what they've been missing. I am sooooooo glad I made that first tandem. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490

I haven't gotten my copy yet, but it does seem like I am meant to go to Davis this summer. It's pretty much in my plans, so see you in June. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490

I've heard that's good stuff. I'll be looking forward to meeting you. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490

Thanks. I don't know if I'll get up your way before Prairie, but I have been talking to a guy from there about coming up for the Leap for Lupus. Teaching keeps me pretty close to home during the week, but I get a little more chance to get away during the summer. Other than my first tandem from the Caravan the day it crashed, I have only jumped from a 182, so an Otter would be a new experience. Well, almost everything I do is a new experience

How many AFF jumps did it take you???
grannyinthesky replied to live2dive's topic in Safety and Training
Oh, the tandem counts in total jumps, but I was purely a tourist on that jump. I still have to do more jumps to get my A, of course, but the question was about completing AFF, not getting your A license. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490 -
:2;2 Finished AFF and jumped my own pack job, though I didn't know it for sure at the time. I packed it Thursday night when the winds had us grounded. My practice packs had generally been re-packed before anyone jumped them, but I heard my instructor say something to the other student about jumping them ourselves. I did wait until after I had landed to ask if it was my pack job.

I'm New, looking for the right jump

It's not the view through a window that is so awesome. It's the view without the window that caught my attention. Have fun Saturday. The sky is a great place to play. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490 -
Yep, I owe more beer. And I jumped my own pack job for the first time today too. I had packed the rig Thursday night when I was at the dz and no one could jump because of the wind. I was the only one using that student rig, so I had a feeling that it was my pack job I was about to jump. Doing a diving exit and back loop knowing I was about to be depending on what i had packed was just too much, so I asked after. It opened just fine. But I think that is also cause for beer. How many AFF jumps did it take you???
grannyinthesky replied to live2dive's topic in Safety and Training
I just finished today. Woo hoo!! I did my first tourist tandem and then completed AFF in 10 jumps. Not too bad considering I started in late November and had two 5 week and one 8 week periods without jumps. It was a fantastic day, by the way. Today was an incredible day, but the roots of today lie in the past. In keeping with that, I decided to resurrect my old thread rather than start a new one. This thread was where I met many new friends in the skydiving community. Diving exits and loops and rolls are just the absolutly most fantastic experience I have ever had. I'm surprised the government hasn't figured out a way to tax our precious few moments in the air. Well, so much for the philosophical approach. Skydiving Rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I passed AFF today !!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't know if I'll ever get my head out of the clouds.

How do you keep up with the posts here to know it was a repost? I try, but work keeps getting in the way. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490

Wanting to skydive is a great motivator. Losing enough weight takes time, but it is soooooooo worth it, for skydiving and your health in general. You have time. I just started learning to skydive and I'm 57 years young.

Well, it's ok by me. I didn't see it the first time. "safety first... and What the hell..... safety second, Too!!! " ~~jmy POPS #10490
