I am breaking up with the poster above me because...

Didn't bring me coffee when I woke up next to them in another thread. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course. -
If you woke up next to the poster above you...

I'm going to grab some coffee. Want some? I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course. -
And the sexual tension is palpable in this thread as well. Can't you two get a room? I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. But do you think it would be appropriate to just remove all of the warning labels and let nature take its course.

I'm glad that was the case. I think it was only natural to question it. But I'm very happy that she has done so incredibly well that she makes people wonder. I hope she can take it that way. I take a kind of sick appreciation in people at the gym asking if I do steroids. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. Three people carry guns into a movie theater...
davjohns replied to Lefty's topic in Speakers Corner
Rats. I was going to feel comfortable in that theater. I was in a theater the other day and kept being distracted by the teenaged employee with a flashlight checking the emergency exit. I wonder what he was going to do with that flashlight if he went to check it and someone was there? I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. And I'm not worried about your worrying about whether my worry worries you in a worried world. The sexual tension is killing me. Can't you two just get a room? Coffee has little effect on me at all. I just like a hot drink in the morning. I sometimes drink it just before going to bed if I want a comfort food type item. Does this smell like chloroform to you? Personally, I've been in few bars and never even spoken to a woman in one. It's always amazed me that people consider that an environment for finding anything but sex...but perhaps I miss the point? Yup. I think it's just me again. When I think about people on the cusp of criminality, I can't help but think there are calculations that go through their minds. I think a big one is, "How easy will it be to be able to do this and can I pull it off?" Now, while it may be true that a determined nut job or criminal probably will do quite a bit to make it happen. I think there's a lot of people on the cusp who are incredibly lazy. They aren't going to devote a few years of their lives learning how to be a ninja so they can knock over a 7/11, if they can pick up a gun and do it today. I think the amazing ease with which guns are available is a factor. So, we take away the store owner's gun and the punk with a knife now has him out-armed. Or just two punks against one store clerk and no firearms needed. The law abiding citizen loses out. I'm not sure that counts as a reduction in crime. Even in the recent case, the guy reportedly had explosives. If he had used those, we might not know who did it today. I can see where it might reduce some violent crime, but could also increase other crimes. Admittedly, being robbed strong-arm is better than being shot. But I'm also not sure how many convenience store robberies actually get the clerk shot. Probably not many. One of my bigger concerns is not facing down the attacker armed with a firearm. I'm more concerned that without a firearm, my wife alone at home is easy prey to one large guy or two small ones. Even with my martial arts training, I know I can hold my own against two attackers. I also know that three will defeat me most of the time. If one of them has a knife, I need a gun. I think the concern of a potentail victim being armed keeps lots of criminal types from cruising my neighborhood or trying to engage a the potential victime who appears smaller or weaker. So, where lack of firearms might disuade some firearms crimes, it might encourage some non-firearms crimes. All just speculation, really. When I was working on my master's in International Relations, I learned Somalia and Haiti are often mentioned as examples of 'fourth world' countries. The only chance they would have to be economically viable would be tourism. That's due to their lack of natural resources and infrastructure. Sadly, their culture of violence destroyed the tourism option. It was recommended that the UN take them under some sort of stewardship. The branch of the UN that oversaw disestablishing colonies was recommended for this. Not sure what happened with all of that. I understand your point. They aren't the best in any one of the events that make up the pentathlon. Otherwise, they would also be competing in those individual events elsewhere in the olympics. I disagree with your conclusion that they therefore don't 'know' the individual events. Just because they aren't the best in the world with a sword doesn't mean they don't know how to use one. They just have other skills in addition to their skill with the sword. I had a firearms instructor in the police academy who told us he only had be accurate enough to hit the chest of his target...after that, he needed to do it faster. He was still a fine shot in terms of accuracy. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. Maybe. Too many variables for me to make it cut and dried. The US has a breadbasket that makes subsistance farming unnecessary. That likely enabled the industrial revolution to a great extent. Then, there are the raw materials available. One can't discount that the US has raw resources that made 'flourishing' much easier than some other geographical configurations. Much of the middle east got lucky with the oil reserves. Somalia and Haiti were and are screwed. Culture in some cases has little to do with it. Sometimes, however, culture can surely hold one back or allow one to overcome lack of resources. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. I think he was saying that firearms availability is too great and that leads to some people committing crimes with them when they might otherwise have not committed crimes. I'm not sure, though. It wasn't a point clearly made or supported if I got it right. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. Another climate skeptic moves to the science corner
davjohns replied to billvon's topic in Speakers Corner
I've got to go toward agnostic with this debate. I think it is only logical that all the human activity on earth has an effect. What that effect is, how much of what we are seeing is due to that effect (over normal global cycles), how much the planet can self-heal and such are all highly debatable and subjective. I think it is clearly in our self-interests to be careful with our use of finite resources and seek less finite resources. I would suggest that any use of finite resources should be toward exploiting less finite resources (ie: use of fossil fuels should lead to use of solar / wind / etc.) So, a cautious person would err on the side of global climate change being human induced. Whether it is real or not may be a moot point in that light. What to do about it is a much more useful discussion. Fossil fuels WILL run out before the sun burns out. Let's explore what to do about it. We DO breath this air we are placing pollutants in. Let's explore what to do about it. The oceans WILL deplete if we aren't careful. Let's explore what to do about it. No alarms. Just recognize reality and shephard your resources wisely. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. Mitt Romney summarizes Health Care Debate in Israel.

Sounds like viable evidence. So, I continue to be concerned. I still maintain my vet is cheaper and more efficient than my doctors. I ran into one of my neighbors at the vet one day asking the vet to look at a wound to tell her if she needed stitches. I thought it was odd at the time. Now, I'm not so sure. She can see the vet in minutes. The doctor takes hours. The vet is low cost and in this case, might be no cost. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. I agree with your conclusion. It's the dreaded 'slippery slope' theory. Personally, I would love to see training classes in firearms proficiency before concealed carry permits were issued. Heck, I'd like to see firearms training in high-school. It might be more beneficial in the long run than the Alabama History courses I was forced to survive. But then, I was on the rifle team in HS, so that's understandable. On the other side of that fence are people who probably fear that teaching youth how to handle firearms will think it makes them more likely to own them and that's just not ok. The same people might think teaching safe sex is just fine. Funny how that works. I have no problem with teaching safe sex or with teaching safe firearms ownership. People are going to have sex and likely to encounter firearms. Might as well know how to handle both. I probably type faster than I make sense. Did that come out at all comprehensible? I can follow on the heels of the last two posts. I agree that the wording that sounds like 'acceptable loss' doesn't sit well with me. I think targeting guns is not the answer. But we should seek an answer. I'm reminded of the black knight in Monty Python's Search for the Holy Grail. Cut off his arms (pun intended) and legs and he threatens to bite your ankles off. Evil will find a way. Target the root of the problem...not the tools. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. I can't say I've known any pentathletes. I know Patton was one. He wrote the Army manual on sabers and designed the last cavalry saber issued by the Army. I expect he knew something about swords. I happen to be rather qualified in Japanese swordsmanship. I would be lost with a foil. I will not be scoffing at her abilities. She's in the olympics. I'm posting on DZ. They are closed on Sunday. The walls proclaim why they are closed on Sunday and that they are on the relgious conservative side. If you had a problem with that, you were already avoiding the place. I would be amazed if this did anything but increase their business. He might have even intended that. Brilliant plan if he did. I don't care if you marry someone your sex, opposite sex, several people or nobody at all. I don't see where the government should be involved at all, though. To paraphrase Jefferson's views on religion: Whether my neighbor marries one person, twenty people, or none at all, it does not cost me money or break my leg. I've given this some thought. As I think of 'culture' I would relate it more to happiness than money. I just don't know how to measure happiness in a culture. Money is easily measured, but hardly is it an indication of happiness. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet.. Could be. I see it as usually a response, but that might be what I want to see. The gun owners and carry advocates I have known are typical people who just want to know they can protect themselves and those around them if made to. Kind of: Live and let live. And if you can't live with that, then you die first. But there are always extremists in any continuum. I know it just wouldnt be right to kill all the stupid people that we meet..
