  1. I will listen to people who have seen me fly, and I solicit feedback on my canopy skills on every landing from any experienced jumpers who saw me. How would you like it if I came on here and told you that I thought you weren't finishing your flare? It is fucking ridiculous for me to make that assessment from here. 2. I did say it was just one jump and that does not make a good review. I am sure that there are people who could have swooped my Sabre2 much further than I was. But I do know that that canopy at that loading was not helping me progress, whereas the Katana is. That is exactly the problem with internet coaching - too much "guessing". 3. Absolutely not, but the point I am making is that there are people with 1,000 jumps who can fly worth a shit and if they came on here nobody would give them a hard time. This is a pointless discussion to have on the internet. "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA
  4. This is all general advice, which is not surprising since you cannot give me specific advice as you have not seen me fly. I have done four canopy courses so far and was getting all I could from my last canopy (Sabre2 150) before I downsized. I do not have "mad skillz" but I do have a dedication to canopy flight which means that I understand and handle a canopy better than many people with 1,000+ jumps. I know two people with 1,000+ jumps who have been injured in the last month by doing things under canopy which were just plain wrong and resulted in a canopy collapse and a stall respectively. I appreciate that you are trying to save me from myself, but without knowing how I fly nobody is in a position to tell me I am doing something wrong. My point is that jump numbers are a very poor guide to someone's ability. "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA
  5. Thanks for that. Perhaps you could give me some specific coaching and tell me exactly what I am doing wrong in my canopy flight then I will be able to work on that and improve. "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA
  6. Was it a crossfire 139 or a crossfire2 139 that you jumped? IMO the xf2 should have gotten a brand new name, as it is nothing like its predecessor, modded or not. My mistake - it was a Crossfire2. "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA
  7. While there is some truth in this, it is a very specific and fairly unusual situation to find yourself with two out. However, you have to land your reserve EVERY time you use it. My decision is to have a reserve size that I am happy with landing in a tight spot after an emergency, regardless of whether it is "compatible" with my main. I have just bought an Optimum 143 and will not be downsizing that as I downsize my main. I want to swoop and hope to be on a sub-100 canopy some day, but I will still have my nice docile reserve for when the shit hits the fan. "The ground does not care who you are. 8. I have heard that too, but I don't buy it. As long as your survival belly skills are solid (ie. track and pull stable) I don;t see why you should have to wait to learn to sit fly. Just be aware that freeflying in groups is more dangerous than belly, so you should limit your FF to small groups (three or less) until you are solid and do not cork out. 10. I am honoured to know you Suzanne, you are really clever!! "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA
  11. Katana 135 I love how responsive it is. It could be called "twitchy" by someone not interested in actually flying the canopy, but I like the way it responds to all inputs - fronts, rears, toggles and harness. It is easy to hold in a dive which means I can start my landing turn higher with an added degree of safety. It is very controllable on the rears but could have more bottom end flare IMO. FWIW I put one jump on a XF139 to compare and was really disappointed. It felt soggy and unresponsive compared to my Katana. It really felt like a backwards step. I realize that one jump is not a good review, but I was expecting more. YMMV Cool thread - very interesting to hear people's opinions of their mains. "The ground does not care who you are. 12. The world is your oyster! BUT - I strongly recommend attending a professional canopy piloting course. After all, it's the canopy ride that delivers you safely to earth (or not if you fuck up). Getting canopy coaching early in your career will give you a great foundation for safe flying in the years to come as well as giving you the skills to get back from long spots and perform safe off-field landings if you can't. Canopy coaching is not just for aspiring swoopers. "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA
  13. I don't use packers, and that fast packjob shows exactly why. It may have opened OK on that occasion, but the lack of line tension, flaking and control over the canopy would really make me wonder about the potential for line burns on the canopy (as well as the consistency of the openings). If I pay for a packjob, I would want it done properly, not half-assed like that one. "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA
  14. Can you expand on this? I can see how body position can give you off heading openings, but not how it affects the speed with which a canopy opens. Thanks! "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA
  15. Why would a plane be at 1,000' over the runway? That would seem to be one of the safest places to be at that altitude. "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA
  16. Ok - so I think I made my point, which is before you next post something slamming someone else or their gear, just think how you would like it. Apparently not very much. "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA
  17. If you are going to cast the first stone like that - why don't you harden the fuck up and get under something a bit more high performance that that big, gay F-111 POS that you jump? "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA
  18. Three points: 1. Nobody here can give you a good answer unless they have seen you fly. 2. Your numbers seem reasonable for a 170 according to the "accepted" limits, and you're doing the right sort of canopy drills. 3. Ignore Sangi, he adds no value to any discussion I have ever seen him comment on. Other than that, what is your reason for wanting to change wing? "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA
  19. Can you define "a long time?" My Spectres have taught me patience... JW Seven or eight seconds of snivel at times. A hell of a lot longer than my Sabre2. If this is a characteristic of the canopy - so be it - it could be a lot worse! "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA
  20. *Raises hand* Why don't you start by posting your jumps and canopy/WL in your profile instead of cowering behind your anonymity? "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA
  21. That's exactly what I have been doing - seems like I am on the right track. I opened at 9,000 for the first 8 or 9 jumps and it didn't worry me at all then!! "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA
  22. Have you asked everyone you fly with if they are okay with you risking their life? Yes Sir/Ma'am [delete as necessary] Can we have a show of hands for who would like this thread to turn into yet another fucking canopy choice bitch-fest? "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA
  23. That's not true, Dave, I have used the rears to get the slider down on this canopy and on others. My question was about whether I could adjust the packjob to avoid the need to mess with risers on opening as I prefer to just stay neutral and let it do its thing. On the rest of your post - you are quite correct. I realize that I am moving a lot faster than is recommended and I accept the risks involved. "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA
  24. Thanks Dave - I would much prefer my openings to be a bit slow rather than risk a slammer! I guess I'll just get used to it. "The ground does not care who you are. It will always be tougher than the human behind the controls." ~ CanuckInUSA
  25. I just (15 jumps ago) got a Katana 135 and am absolutely loving it. However, I have had some REALLY snivelly openings and I was wondering if there is any way to speed up the opening a little by changing my packjob. Currently I am leaving the nose hanging and cupping the slider over it and putting 3-4 loose rolls in the tail. Maybe this is just a Katana thing (I assume that is the reason for the mesh on the slider) as a friend has a Katana 107 and she says it takes a long time to open.
