wingsuit landing without parachute project
fasted3 replied to profesorlino's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I should note that two of my personal idols of wingsuit flying have stated that my idea is suicide, just in case anybody else wants to try it. But what do I know? -
wingsuit landing without parachute project

The ride up from Slidell goes right above lake Ponchatrain. But what do I know? -
I like Cessna jumps. It's like old school. I don't have a lot of them, but I like those jumps as much as any. I made AFF 1 out of a Cessna, but I can't remember it at all. To the skyvan guy, go for it, Way easy and fun. But what do I know?

wingsuit landing without parachute project

That was me with the water landing. I do think that the proper sky slope is also a possibility, but as far as a guy going out and doing wingsuit landings on a routine basis, water is the way to go. Yes, a lake on a smooth day. Yes, some water anchors, attached to the leg straps, so as not to tear off a leg. Similar to a drag chute in drag racing, deployed either at near contact, or to satisfy the purests, only after contact. Either way is survivable, IMO. Water can be hard, yes. But it ain't rock. I've swan dived into water from 90 feet. Try that into rock. People belly flop frin 33 feet, That's about 20 MPH. Modern suits can surpass this with sufficient forward speed. Ground effect may help. Dive and flair. Flairing, even stalling a wingsuit kills a lot of forward speed. You have to land it on your chest, so some padding is necessary. Even a keel to maintain heading. Some arm extensions? So we are talking about 20 mph vertical and say 80 mph forward. Do-able. Skip like a rock. Hope for the best. Here's a thought: It would be possible to arieate a large expanse of the lake. I think I could hit it... But I may not want to try it at all. I bet someone will do it, and I think it will happen sooner rather than later. Heck, for enough dough, I'd try it myself. PS: You probably don't have enough, But what do I know? -

I think a water landing is possible. But what do I know? -
It's not normal. Not normal to be scared on the first few jumps? OK, Captain Fearless. Well, I never claimed to be normal. You must be right. But what do I know?

Worked great. Thanks! But what do I know?

I turned off the cam without stopping recording first. Now I've got a big file that won't play. Does anyone know how to fix it? Thanks. But what do I know?

I've seen studies about a lot of things. It seems that those with an agenda can always find (fund?) a study to support them. In fact, the tobacco industry did do a study that came to the same conclusions I stated, but when they realized the implications of touting the benefits of their customers dying off, they didn't release it. Anyway, from what I've seen, it doesen't cost any more to die from lung cancer than many other diseases. But what do I know?

Personal observation. Which part do you disagree with? But what do I know?

Raising minimum deployment altitude

How many people have been taken oiut by a low puller? But what do I know? -
This propaganda is how they get away with it. Smokers do not put an undue burden on scociety. A lot of people run up huge medical bills before they die, not just smokers, and many smokers die of something else before they ever cost a cent. It's a wash. Now add in the fact that most smokers die sooner than non smokers and think of the money saved from that in SSI payments, etc. If the govt. was smart, it would give them away free. But what do I know?

Very good flying and video! Is that Jarno backflying for so long and stable? I wish I could fly that good on my belly. Nice! But what do I know?

Well, it doesn't say: "be the holder of a current USPA license or its accepted foreign equivalent" Maybe it should, as it does in other parts of the SIM. But what do I know?

No. The BSR is a flat 200. It would have been preferred to have it read 200 in the preceding 18 months, but that wasn't gonna fly. So... The BSR is 200 jumps. Period. The recommendation remains 200 jumps in the previous 18 months and with a coach, or 500 flat with or without a coach. BTW, we/I didn't let this guy fly either. We had a good talk about his bridle as well, and he's having it shortened. This opens an interesting can of worms because the BSR's state: "Any person performing a wingsuit jump must have at least 200 skydives, and hold a current USPA license." So I think the jump number question is clear. You need 200, and that's it. Technically, a person with 200 jumps does not need an instructor at all. And, it doesn't matter if a person has 500 wingsuit base jumps and 100 WS from a plane, if they don't have 200 skydives, it's a no go. Now for the interesting part... A USPA licence is required to jump a wingsuit at USPA drop zones! I've read it a bunch of times, but this it the first time that little item regestered. Hmmmm. But what do I know?

From what I understand, tandem flat spins are pretty dangerous without a wingsuit. I would like to hear some TI's thoughts about this. Especially those with WS experience. I've flown a WS quite a bit, (without getting particularly good at it,) but from what I've experienced with WS rodeos, it would be darn hard to recover with someone attached. For anybody, and quite likely impossible for me. This is the reason I think it's really risky to do WS tandems. It's just a matter of time until someone does get into a spin, and that's when it will get ugly. If a couple of stout hearted individuals did decide to try this, I wish them well, and get video. I will concede DSE's point that it would be a mistake to condone this in the US because of possible FAA involvement, so any experiments should be done elsewhere. But what do I know?

I was thinking about your shows too, and agree that they are a lot better quality. I like them both, but I'm easily entertained I guess. I liked watching Matt's skydiving wingsuit vids before I ever made a jump and liked them too. In fact, the effort those guys went to in making their videos is what got me to start jumping in the first place. But what do I know?

“Hard landing in strong/gusty winds” fatalities
fasted3 replied to GLIDEANGLE's topic in Safety and Training
Given your logic, a jumper would be encouraged to use what could just be dumb luck as the benchmark for future decisions. Please tell me you don't teach that insanity to the noobs. You're right, that statement was poorly worded. My thinking was to point out that some do jump safely in winds a bit higher than my personal limits. It is difficult to judge just exactly where someone's limit is by their posts on the internet. I did mention that my own philosophy on the subject is to err on the side of caution. If asked, I will discuss it with anyone at the DZ, but I don't instruct anyone, or go out of my way to inflict my standards on noobs or anybody else. I sometimes mention that most of the accidents I've seen have happened during borderline weather. I hope this clears up my earlier statement. But what do I know? -
OK, I admit it. Until now, I had not watched this video all the way through. I did not think I needed to, as you immediately panned it, leading me to request that you would do something better. Yes, there is a gaping void of what we could convey to the rest of the world about what we do, You are very welcome to display your stuff, as I do my self, in a limited way. But back to this show. I think you are not being fair to what is offered here. There are some great interviews, and in fact, I liked the show. Hey, have you ever seen 'Ice road truckers?' How about a guy eating bugs? Give me a break. Great show Justin, keep up the good work. But what do I know?

Pshaw, you faint easy. But what do I know?

Fare. Good grief, you get paid to write??? But what do I know?

Nope, I'm not an Asian girl, and again, I'm not in the video. What joy do you get from trashing this? If you want to complain about it, you should do one yourself. I could possibly do a better show, but since I don't want to go through the effort, and especially don't want to face the flack from assholes that think they could do better, (but never do,) I choose to not participate in this forum. I enjoy the efforts of those that do, some more than others. But for you to come on here with your negative opinions, leads me to believe that you could to a better show. So have at it! But what do I know?

“Hard landing in strong/gusty winds” fatalities
fasted3 replied to GLIDEANGLE's topic in Safety and Training
Your reply makes sense to me, even though I am among the first to sit out a load for bad weather. There are loads that some should sit out and others can jump safely. If you land without injury, you made the right call. Finding the line is something each of us must do on every jump, and sometimes we don't make the best call. One thing I know for sure is that I never got hurt on a jump I didn't make. I've also sat there thinking, heck, I could have made this jump. Just another reason I love skyding. But what do I know?
