true, but i was just trying to explain things to a windows user, who , for the most part, don't know or need to know what Apache or BIND or DNS or any other stuff to do what they want/need to do online. like you said, most viruses are targeted at windows for the same reason that most software is written for it, there's simply an exponentially larger installed base to target. to hit a unix system you would have to know some relatively exotic scripts, or c programming, where windows can be had with any number of visual programming and scritping tools, and the script kiddies that write them are by and large not all that smart. here's an idea for a contest... we passed 100,000 posts in this forum a few months ago, and we are already over 140,000. who wants to guess the date we pass 200,000? i'll open the bidding with sunday, oct 13, 2002. who's next? is he the guy who did "flight of the old dog" and "day of the cheetah" ( or something simialar)? i read one about a thought controlled fighter jet that was pretty cool, and another about a super-stealth plane that i think were his. great stuff! other than that, the list would be: douglas adams - hitchhiker & dirk gently series king - the stand clancy - jack ryan / john clark series clive cussler - dirk pitt series john grisham, read them all a couple of times tolkien - lotr and the hobbit hailey - everything from the original airport to the detective tami hoag - ashes to ashes, dust to dust and a few others a bunch of sci-fi, a lot of cheesy detective/crime novels, nothing too deep. my 2nd pff jump a couple of weekends ago, had my landing pattern all figured out, got to the right spot at the right time, and the winds died. rather than trying a flat spiral/turn to burn altitude (i was still around 300 feet), i rode it out and landed in the middle of the runway. i stood up the landing, but when i turned around to gather up the canopy, i saw the jump plane coming in on final. we noticed each other at the same time, me running like crazy to get off the runway, him going for the throttle to go around. scared the hell out of me! basically, if you run linux or unix (freebsd is a free unix variant), you won't get viruses because of the way unix works. basically, it isn't as stupid as windoze. it also isn't for neophytes either as it requires and assumes a fair amount of knowledge to get them working in the first place. i like freebsd though, still learning it, but it's kinda cool.

i agree, if you can't crouch you'd probably have a hard time with your arch, which can lead to all kinds of instability problems in freefall. better off to go commando. "Hang on a sec, the young'uns are throwin' beer cans at a golf cart." MB4252 TDS699 killing threads since 2001

not skydiving related but: from cnn... SAN DIMAS, California (CNN) -- One person died Thursday and at least 10 were injured, including two children, when a small plane plowed into a lake beside a suburban Los Angeles park, skipped onto land and crashed into a crowd, officials said. Six people, including the children, were in critical condition, said Capt. Mark Savage of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The children were taken from the scene in cardiac arrest, an L.A. fire official said. The person who died was one of two people aboard the twin-engine Cessna 310, an FAA official said. The FAA official said the tower at Pomona Bracket Airport, where the plane had just taken off, received a distress call from the pilot saying the plane was unable to climb. Shortly thereafter, the plane crashed into Puddingstone Lake before jumping into the park, the official said. Puddingstone Lake Park is near Raging Waters theme park about 45 miles east of Los Angeles. Capt. Russ Collins, a spokesman for the San Dimas Police Department, said a call came in at 12:49 p.m. local time (3:49 p.m. ET) that a plane was down on the east shore of the lake. Collins said personnel from the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department, deputies from the San Dimas sheriff's station, and Los Angeles County Park Police were at the scene. it was just something i always thought would be cool to try. i mentioned it to my wife who told me her and her ex had done it and it would be fun to go again. she had taken her fjc and first jump, then never went back, figuring it would be the same this time. to her chagrin, i got hooked and am currently going through pff. i got hooked by the exileration and challenge of it. every jump (i am up to 12) i notice more and more of what is around me and it just amazes the hell out of me that i can/am doing it. i get goosebumps watching skydiving scenes in mainstream movies even though i know they are (often badly) faked. i get goose bumps just thinking about climbing out of the plane to do my next level. i can't wait to try free flying, relative work, maybe even working towards being a coach or instructor down the road just so i can watch others experience the same thrill i do. i got a video of my level two and instead of watching myself, i was watching the background and couldn't believe the view, can't wait 'til i actually see it in freefall instead of concentrating on my tasks. and i love the look on whuffo cow-orker's faces when they find out what i do on the weekends! what sort of percentage are you talking about? our dz (in canada) has to charge our 'harmonized sales tax (HST)' on everything now. i just payed $995 for my pff course, plus $150 tax. student jumps are $57.50 ($50 + $7.50 HST) which includes gear rental. it sux!!! ya might want to take some ESD precautions while playing with the RAM!!! if you don't have a good ground cable/strap, at least 'discharge' yourself by touching a metal part inside the PC before you touch the chips/cards. we have four seasons in canada, same as you guys, but ours are different. we have almost winter, winter, still winter and construction. right now we're into the construction season, which lasts until labour day. i fully intend to honour my beers, but since everything is a first, it'll be easier to wait until i get a solo certificate and then buy a keg. jump #10, first pff jump, 40 seconds of freefall, guess i can finally say i skydive! what a rush, but i remembered most of it for my debrief, and due to a change in the winds i landed about 300 yards past the target, in the middle of the runway. turned around to ground the canopy and was treated to the sight of a cessna bearing down on me. i grabbed my stuff and burned rubber getting out of his way, but he went around anyway. i was told that was the pre-second time this year someone made the plane go around on final. i think i'll take the student exemption from beer, then buy a keg for graduation. jump 2 and 3 tomorrow if we don't get winded out again, then maybe 4 and 5 on monday. long weekend in canada! woohoo!!!! Dear Abby, After I retired, I met a new fishing buddy named Sam. Sam loves to fish as much as I do. The wife has never met Sam and always feels that I spend too much time fishing. The other day I took a picture of Sam holding up two nice bass that we caught, I showed the picture to the wife. Now the wife says that I can't go fishing with Sam anymore and wants me to sell the boat. Guess the wife doesn't like me enjoying myself with my fishing buddy!Maybe it's because Sam is a better fisherman than her, I don't know. What would you do? Tell the wife to forget it and continue fishing with Sam OR Quit fishing and sell the boat? Please download the picture of Sam and the two nice bass and give me your advice, Thanks,

i like the way you worded that! where's the pics?
