  1. "Would it be fair to compare isolated instances of prisoner abuse by US troops in Iraq with say a policy of torture implemented by the SAS upon prisoners in Ulster ? " It might be fair, human rights abuses occur all over, especially in a time of armed struggle. However its unlikely that the SAS would allow themselves to be photographed with a gleeful expression on their faces, flashing a thumbs up etc. Far less let the photographs fall into the hands of a sensationalist media, while trying to get the prisoners' comrades to surrender peacefully. What were these fuckwits thinking about? -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 2. "cleanliness is next to godliness" When my wee boy has been playing with the dawg in the garden, I reckon cleanliness is next to impossible. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 3. "Bah, AD beat me to it. Wonder if he googled too?" Of course he did, look at what he cut and pasted, hint look for the word (Google) Your welcome Peachsouthern, if you can't find it on google, you can probably find it at the bonfire. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 4. "So waiting on the confirmation." Very wise, but its looking unpleasantly true. The Beeb, and the Independent are both carrying it. They are pretty reliable sources normally. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/3672901.stm http://news.independent.co.uk/world/americas/story.jsp?story=516637 And our government has commented. "Mr Blair's official spokesman said: "The US army spokesman has said this morning that he is appalled, that those responsible have let their fellow soldiers down, and those are views that we would associate the UK Government with." He added: "This is not representative of the 150,000 soldiers that are in Iraq, and they should not judge the actions of the coalition as a whole on the actions of a few. " My emphasis to try and keep it all civil. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 5. Thanks Docjohn. That looks like it will do the job. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. Thomas Jefferson
  6. Hot tip, type the lyrics you do know into the Google search bar, and add the word 'lyric' on the end. If you wanna be happy, by Jimmy Soul. Edit to remove the lyrics. 7. Difficult to believe huh Remi?
  8. I heard you can only get them in Harrods in the UK. Are there more outlets for them now? Modesty forbids me telling you how many of these I could eat...... -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 9. "How about just getting hold of an old camera body and measuring how much force is required to rip the front of the camera off via the lens attachement point." That would work, but its going to vary from camera to camera. Its not just video cams you might want to consider. See the attached from some unhappy chums (Brent Finley, Henny Wiggers, and Simon Ward) in Thailand from '99. This damage was caused during bigway exits from Hercs, jumpers colliding with camerafliers. If it can happen to these well respected fliers, it can happen to you. Personally, I think that this is just one of those risks one has to accept when strapping a cam on. But I'm always open to making things better.
  10. I've transferred Powerpoint slides to video before, and if you are careful about the way the slideshow is constructed, it is relatively easy. The thing to avoid is fancy transitions etc within Powerpoint. If its just static slides, tables, graphs etc, you can save each individual slide as a jpeg and then assemble in an NLE app like Premiere. (go to file, save as, and select JPG) but the quality is pretty low. If the slides are dynamic then its a whole different ballgame and you are getting into realms of overlaying graphics etc in Premiere, which will eat up time and patience. There are much better ways than Powerpoint to put graphics onto video. Yay verily Powerpoint sucks, but it is ubiquitous. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 11. "Strong enough to prevent it coming off on a hard opening but weak enough to break on a riser strike" This would be difficult to do, due to the wide variety of available lenses, and their individual geometries and weights. Compare the nice slim 0.3s from Royal Lens etc, and some of the other wide angle lenses. Estimating the impact energy of a riser strike would be difficult to do with any meaningful accuracy, as would estimating the deceleration forces of a hard opening, as would estimating the 'damage load' on the lens barrel of the camera itself. The roll cages by Tom Saunders (Aerial Focus) had, if I remember correctly a 'tube' which protected the lens barrel, and I'm guesing, as one who masquerades as a loss prevention engineer, that this would be a better way of protecting the front lens elements. You would need to leave a finger access slot so you could still access the focus ring though. The tube would require a frame to support it and absorb some of the strike impact, adding weight and complexity to the mount design By the way its turning (making round things) that is involved in the manufacture of stepping rings as opposed to milling. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 12. "so what are people's views?" Any civilised human being will be apalled by this report. "Brig Gen Kimmitt said: "These pictures may reflect the actions of individuals. But, by God, it doesn't reflect my army. "If we can't hold ourselves up as an example of how to treat people with dignity and respect, we can't ask that other nations do that to our soldiers." What he said. The coalition forces have just lost the moral high ground they have been working so hard to achieve. These pictures will only give the remaining 'pockets of resistance' a reason to slug it out for longer, potentially costing more lives than any intel gathered by these techniques might have saved. The report and pictures will also, I fear, provide motivation for further unrest and reprisals around the world. I hope Brigadier General Janis Karpinski can live with herself and the consequences of what she has done here. To say I'm disappointed is puting it mildly. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 13. "We are all very fond of our Grandad and the older he gets the more protective we become. " For what its worth, Scratch, he's pretty well respected here too. Here's a list of streets named after him from streetmap.co.uk. Mandela Avenue, Brackla, Bridgend, Mid Glamorgan, CF31 Mandela Avenue, Falkirk, FK2 Mandela Close, London, NW10 Mandela Close, Norwich, NR3 Mandela Close, Stanley, County Durham, DH9 Mandela Close, Sunderland, SR1 Mandela Court, Reading, RG1 Mandela Street, London, NW1 Mandela Street, London, SW9 Mandela Way, Gateshead, Tyne And Wear, NE11 Mandela Way, London, SE1 Mandela Way, Southampton, SO15 Mandela Way, Stoke-On-Trent, ST3 Nelson Mandela Close, London, N_10 Nelson Mandela Place, Glasgow, G_2 Nelson Mandela Road, London, SE3 Nelson Mandela Walk, Sheffield, S_2 I don't know how many buildings are named after him, there are lots though. Don't waste your time looking for streets named after George Bush....... 14. Like I said Bill, there's still a whole lot to come out of this yet. "allegations that he traded oil with Iran at a time when Tehran was on the U.S. embargo list " Yep the whole thing stinks, I was going to mention that this looked awfully similar to the Iran-Contra stuff, but was waiting to see what panned out. With 40 countries involved, I reckon there will be some worried execs out there in corporation land. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 15. But you have biometric data on your driving license, how sinister is that? Height, eye colour, ethnicity, etc are all elements of biometric data. Having a jpeg of a thumbprint, or a retina scan is a long way from unauthorised cloning. Enough of the paranoia already! -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 16. "Recent media reports have accused individuals and companies from more than 40 countries, including a senior UN official, of being involved in corruption and bribery in connection with the oil sales." Yes, it should indeed make interesting reading, Vinny. If your GAO is investigating, that might imply, to one who might be tempted to jump to conclusions, that American companies or individuals have been involved in sanction busting.... -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 19. Its a Minidv tape model Jimmy, Looks nice enough I would be curious to see how the smaller CCD (1/6 th of an inch) fared alongside the more traditional 1/3 and 1/4 inch ccd cams. http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/sony-dcr-hc20-camcorder-review.htm Review here (relatively favourable), it looks like the interface ports are on the right hand side, which could make side mounting awkward. It does look like reasonably good value for money, and should do the job unless I'm missing something obvious. 25mm front lense thread is a PITA though. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 20. Q, you just condemned your brother to a lifetime of poverty, Ramen noodles, an unhealthy interest in flimsy thin nylon, and hanging around dusty airfields in the middle of nowhere waiting for the winds to die down and the clouds to go away. In truth, you rock! -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 21. "the majority of deaths in this sport in England do not cost the insurers anything." Its Britain! I'm not sure the industry's actuaries have a full understanding of the risks either. EG I was filling out forms a while back for life insurance quotes, and the questions were along the lines of... Do you participate in record attempts? Do you take part in competitions? (Duh, its a sport!) Are you a mamber of a recognised organisation. (again Duh!) etc. It seemed also that they were loading it along the lines of the more jumps you do each year, the more likely you are to burn in. When we all know the reverse is more accurate. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. "Recent media reports have accused individuals and companies from more than 40 countries, including a senior UN official, of being involved in corruption and bribery in connection with the oil sales. Mr Annan has approved an independent investigation into the allegations. It is also being investigated by the General Accounting Office, an arm of the US Congress." From the Beeb.http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/3668927.stm I'm going to wait and see how this one pans out, rather than jump to any sort or premature conclusion. Look at the whole George Galloway/forged documents debacle for example. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me.
