  1. Boys and girls, we are all missing the bigger picture here. If you check the documented saves, the majority are no / lo pulls. Granted, the unconcious (fek ra spelin') and dislocation issues are relevant, but sooner or later we all go low, reagardless of our best intentions..... http://www.pia.com/SSK/saves02b.htm Check it out, it makes good reading...... Ah, sorry, Bill von covered this whilst I was composing....... D
  2. To make batch capture easy, just black each tape before you use it. IE put a brand new tape in the cam, start recording, go to the pub or whatever, then rewind the tape and use as normal, works every time......Then you just select all the in and out points, make it happen and sit back letting the pooter and the cam do their thing. First time you see it its cool, second time has you reaching for the beer. Saves a load of head wear. "Thats difficult to push around in the timeline, " not in Premiere its not....Ulead should have something similar, but not sure. If you are keen on this edit malarky try out www.computervideo.net they have a cool board, but it is UK based so watch out for any PAL/NTSC issues. Cya D
  3. He he he, I'm spending most of today writing specs for fire fighter's uniforms. I just had a cool visualisation..... ROFLM (lardy) AO, and the boss is giving me a strange look...... Thanks man, ya cheered me up.
  4. Or buy a cheap domestic fire blanket for about 25 bucks, prolly more work to adapt, but better shielding.....
  5. Interesting thread folks... Instrument lag is gonna vary between maunufacturers, models, dust/shit, wear etc inside the instrument, whether it has jewelled bearings, and air temp/pressure etc, If you are worried about your alti, give Doddington's (I think) a call, they used to advertise in the UK mag, but I haven't seen the mag for a while. Another thing to consider is the fact that there will always be an element of paralax error with any visual analogue device. ie you may not be looking at it from an ideal angle. Take a good look at your alti, can you really accurately discern the difference between say 3200, and 3300 ft? Now tilt it around a bit.... I would estimate that people reading their alti (on a regular jump, quick glance scenario) may mis read it by up to +/- 150 feet, which kind of out weighs all this lag, and accuracy stuff... Have there ever been any comparaitve tests done under controlled conditions, say with a vaccuum chamber? And are the results published anywhere.... D
  6. Agree with everyone else this was hammered to death recently...btw AADs are NOT manadatory at Spaceland. "All things being equal, I don't like jumping without it, especially because I skysurf and there is always that fear in my mind of possibly blacking out while in a flat spin." I heard that a flat spin can generate enough lift to 'fool' the cypres. I think this is what happened to Chris Gauge in Spain, but don't know for sure. The only excuse for not having an AAD is money, but I do have a friend that feels that they interfere with natural selection and are therefore a bad idea in an already shallow gene pool... For the record I have one, but am prepared to jump (and have done so) without it, eg if its away on a service... D
  7. Good stuff will be required. IE well framed, rock steady, well lit, and relatively creative. Watch some commercially available video from the likes of Patrick Passe (Crosswind, Travelling, Anti Gravity etc), Norman Kent, Mike Mcgowan, Joe Jennings and so forth. See how their videos 'flow' see what works, then take a good long look at the shots you will put together for your resume. Good luck. D
  8. Dude, this is called logging, and its the editing equivalent of packing, ie its dull but necessary, there is simply no way round it. I use Premiere which has the ability to log as you capture, and attaches desrciptions to the video files, but its a pain to use. Okay, here's what works for me... Make a wee form up as described earlier, put it on a clipboard, set the cam to display tape counter, open a beer, and just sit and plod thru it. Log descriptions, tape counts, and if required cam flier or anything else you need to reference in the future. You can save yourself some pain by conecting two cams/decks together w firewire (assuming your using dv) and putting one master tape together with all the good shots that you may need (what I call pre filtering), you should log this as well..Its also useful as security, just in case something happens to the original 'master' tapes, its unlikley but you never know. If you have multiple camera angles, POVs etc, this will put all the relevant footage together. I try not to capture large amount of dv to the pooter, this ends up confusing things, and wastes disc space. This 'system' has worked for me on some very big way videos, up to 10 cameras plus POV shots. Once captured create separate directories for each jump, plus other 'good shots' such as planes, faces, sunsets, funnies etc. At the end of each editing session, dump the timeline to DV tape as a futher back up, losing a project mid way is a real pisser.... Happy editing D
  9. Its all in preparation my man......
  10. Yup stretching before any sporting activity is highly recommended. I stretch every morning before jumping, it really helps cos I am a big guy, but not really that supple. You will be surprised the difference it makes to your jumping. It might even save you a wee sprain or worse. Okay.... Go to www.skydivemag.com type in 'stretch' in the search window, and check out the stuff in there. There is a good article by Dave Eardley in the Feb 98 issue. There's also loads of stuff and advice on prepping for training that should help you get the most from your tunnel time. Enjoy D.
  11. Hmmm....I know a few people that jump there without AADs. I just called 'em up and they are not mandatory, official, from the DZO. So come on down and party.
  12. Born Glasgow Scotland First jump Erroll Scotland. Currently working/living between Texas and Aberdeen Scotland (yeah I know, its a long drive, but too far to cycle . Jumped in 11 countries, 4 continents, citizen of the world. Home DZ...wherever the vibe is good and the surf is up. Favourite DZ:- Empuriabrava in Spain.
  13. I seem to remember somebody telling me that dark colours degraded in UV more than light. It may have been DZ myth, I can't really see manufacturers providing assymetrically coloured canopies that would develop turns...... D
  14. "No No...I want to pay twice as much!!!!!!!!!!! " Man, you shoulda bought a Pro Track then.... Got money to burn? I got a lighter!
  15. Okay. i'll hum it for you, mmmm mmmmm mmmmm mmmmm does that help
  16. Okay music buffs, the end (extra sequence) on Anti Gravity, sounds a bit like Dave Gilmour, or Pink Floyd. Who is it? Which album? D
  17. "Pussy Galore, named after your father no doubt" Shon again..
  18. "I know it sounds stupid.. but i just feel safe when i drive.. " That may be true Jab, but since I've been here (US) it seems that everyone else on the road is out to get me......No matter how safely I think I'm driving. So its seatbelts, airbags, full face helmet, 2 audible altis, Cypres, and a large reserve for me.... here we go again........
  19. Not necessarily patriotic, just moved by the horror and waste of war. I visited some of the war graves in Europe this summer and the thing that struck me deeply was the ages of the guys who fell and the variety of countries they came from. Got me really thinking about what I was doing when I was 17-19, and tried to imagine what it must have been like for these young men. I also visited the Arnhem memorial / museum, which was well worth the effort.
  20. "bought it at TSO-Outlet and love the thing" Whassa TSO-Outlet ?? got a contact etc?
  21. "Im gonna do some solo's with a new canopy soon. What can I work on doing a solo and pulling high that will improve my RW skills? (Excluding freeflying) Style Series perhaps? Any suggestions for Solo Drill Dives? " Kinda difficult to do 'relative' solo drill dives, I know some fun and educational stuff we can do. Then dump high cos I need to play with my canopy too. I'll look out for you at Spaceland this w/e. Hop n Pops always seem like a waste of a pack job to me.... Dave
  22. Sounds like they are all same girl, unless they are sisters! Or mutliple personalities, all have a black lab called Geronimo, but different star signs...eh? WTF?
  23. Nah, it was just a pre production model of the wee skinny new Time Outs, George gave me it to test out at Vichy, back in 2000. The new model has the same functions as the last basic Time Out (not the Evolution) but is way smaller. The software is the operating sofware built into the gismo. It doesn't do anything fancy, unlike the Pro Track or the Evolution.
  24. "Is that so much to ask???" Apparently, yes, it is too much to ask, but if you find one, can I get her sister....
  25. Pucca (or Pukka) Brit speak for correct, proper, genuine, etc. The p/type I have had a 15 jump limit on it imposed by CnGs software people---so it needs reset every weekend or so. Pain in the ass, so I want a fully working (pucca) one now.
