  1. "When a rogue group of Muslims declare a Jihad on America and Americans, then yes, " Dave, I'd just like to remind everyone that it is a ROGUE group of extreme fundamentalists we are talking about, not the entire faith of Islam. Lets not allow this to become a Holy War please, despite what we will hear from Mullahs, and various others who stir up this sort of fervour. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 4. Hey Hans, in order to test the strength of the support form these countries, and their belief that what they are doing is the right thing, ask yourself this question. Do you think ANY of these countries would embark upon an military course of action if the US pulled out? Interesting scenario huh? -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 5. Kewel Ramon, well done, I recall the time you and I were mentioned in the mag by name....Thanks to you throwing me around during a freefly meet at Spaceland. yuk, yuk, yuk -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 6. If you need more HD space just use the firewire ports then, if you want a DVD writer, get one in a firewire case etc, no worries about RAID, SCSI, and other stuff. The Adaptec 4300 card should work fine, Firewire on the MOBO sounds cool too tho. If you are serious about the editing look at some of the 'real time' cards, which come in various prices for various levels of real time. Less rendering waits..... -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 8. Throw in a firewire or IEEE 1394 card as well. Suggest an ADS Pyro (my one works fine) as it comes bundled with some goodies, or a standard bare card if you already have editing software. How serious are you about the editing? -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 9. I don't like the sound of your design. d-bag on the jumpsuit, and connector links etc....I think you may be asking for trouble. Okay, in days of old, a very popular camera helmet was one designed by 'adventure' camera pioneer Leo Dickinson (of Wally Gubbins fame). It had a drogue mounted within the crown area of the helmet. It sort of acted as padding. The rest of the helmet padding was held in place by its own 'springiness' if you see what I mean. The cutaway handle on the chin strap release was attached to the drogue deployment bag. This was actually quite neat as there was no exterior connections and you could take the helmet on and off pretty easily, there were no external bridles etc that might activate the drogue and strangle you in freefall. I'm not sure if it would save your camera, but it might not hurt whoever it landed on as badly. The bridle from the drogue should attach to the helmet at the front-centre otherwise the helmet will impact cameras down. I've tried searching for a reference to this helmet for you, but to no avail.... It actually had a number of features that were way ahead of their time, twin audible mounts, integrated sng minimised ringsite, and a stills mount that could be rotated in freefall, forehead mount for portrait or landscape shots. Plus the aforementioned cutaway on the chinstrap that was linked to the drogue. Downside was that it was pretty ugly and the shell was made of HDPE, which is hard to paint (similar to protec shell material). Nobody actually wants to cut their helmet away, but if you are going to jump camera you had better be prepared to ditch it, and without a second thought. You have the rest of your life to figure out what will happen if you don't chop it in an entanglement. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 10. The reputation of Dave's Burritto fuelled Botty Burps has already crossed the Atlantic. Fortunately the associated toxic emissions have been dispersed somewhere in the jet stream. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 11. "I thought the Diamond .3 didn't have those black corners in them ? Does yours there in that pic " I think this is called vignetting, you probably won't see it on a normal TV set with the diamond 0.3. If youdo, a small amount of 'zoom in' will get rid of this unwanted effect. Not everything the camera records is replayed on a TV set, if you have Premiere, check out the "title safe" areas to see how much image is actualy lost. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 13. "In the end, I strongly believe every jumper is responsible for him/her self." I absolutely agree with you Saskia, self regulation by the jumpers is the ideal situation, however it doesn't seem to be working. "I wouldn´t expect a retailer to refuse to sell me a non-appropriate canopy." I think you'd be surprised. In these litigious times, it would be nice for the likes of Square1 to have some form of accepted guidance in these matters. I'm guessing Lisa (Skybytch) gets all sorts of strange requests, and has to exercise an element of judgement in who she sells certain canopies to. I suspect that this is one of the reasons the normally reserved Kate Cooper is taking a keen interest in this subject. She is part owner of Square1, and as such may be sued in the US if they sell an unsuitable canopy to a novice.....I'm sure we have all heard tales of bizarre court cases from the US...example the lady sueing Macdonalds because her coffee burnt her as she spilled it whilst driving etc... Even frivolous court cases can cost the defendent a lot of money. I genuinely hope it never comes to that, and I guess SQ1 carries insurance for this. But if their premiums can be reduced by following accepted guidance in canopy selection, then I would like to think their premiums and hence their prices might drop slightly as well. I'm pretty sure Lisa can provide examples of jumpers asking her for canopies that they have no business buying. "I think everybody can/should ask around for opinions " ask ten jumpers their opinions, and you will get ten different answers. See any "which is the best..." thread here. Gus, I'm curious about this codec, does it work on type 2 DV files, the blurb only talks about YUV (analogue) signals...... -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 20. "Well The new Voodoo is paid for, and so is my reserve, and cheque number 2 is more than enough to cover bills and a used main so I guess things aren't as bad as they could be" AND, you now have some worthwhile experience to put on your resume, and a person who would no doubt provide a reference for you. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 22. "That's why I'd be in favor of something like this as a USPA produced guideline in the US" This is what I said way up the thread, it might work as guidance to be used by S&TAs, instructors, CCIs etc. Regulation is likely to be unpopular. It also struck me last night, that this could form the basis of a screening tool that could be deployed by responsible gear retailers and dealers. I've yet to dream up a scheme to protect newbies from irresponsible dealers. This way the retailer can rest easy that they have taken reasonable steps to assess a jumpers suitability by applying a recognised 'standard' or guidance. -------------------- He who receives an idea from me, receives instruction himself without lessening mine; as he who lights his taper at mine, receives light without darkening me. 23. Why are you trying to save it to CD? If it is for archiving, why don't you export it to a tape in your cam. If it is for transfer to another computer, without a firewire conn. laplink it via a USB cable. Or split the files up and spread over a couple of CDs. Otherwise you will have to compress it, and suffer quality loss in the process. If you let us know why you want to put the video on disc, we can probably find a solution for you.
