  1. Here they are Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live
  2. Wrong. Did Simon tell you that? There were 3 separate 2-canopy out incidents, 2 of which were wingsuit related and have already been discussed but they were not Cypres fires. Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live
  3. What size and model of canopy and how much was to total suspended weight? Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live
  4. From memory, isn't it a mention in the Kit News section that PD now do sub-100 sq. ft. reserves? The picture looks like the reserve canopy just starting to inflate with a main pilot chute in tow up in the lines because the vertical descent rate is still high. 5. :-P Yes! 40 pounds since Christmas. Watching what I eat more closely and jogging 4 miles a day. I've even started flat-flying again since I no longer have "fall-rate issues"! Seriously though, it makes all of my skydiving so much easier especially tandems and wingsuit. You mean ripped! ;-) Yes, but they were sausage-grabbing so I hardly saw them. p.s. Love your work JP! 7. You forgot UncleCharlie! I've seen the other shots in this sequence too. Very nice. Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

  9. I've not been tipped once in my 155 tandems and I wouldn't expect it either. I think it would be quite rare for a Tandem Instructor to be tipped her in the UK. I don't know if that is because of the culture or the fact that a tandem here costs in excess of $400 (not including video or stills) so people think they have already paid enough! I also get paid approximately $70 per tandem (but the cost of living here is proportionately higher). I hear that at the tandem factories in Hawaii where they get a lot of Japanese tourists they have little mailboxes set up for the students to leave their tips in? Having said that, I have occasionally received thank-you cards in my short tandem career which I find more rewarding than a tip :-) Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live
  10. Interesting. They have a picture that I took on their website. Wonder what I should do about it? Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

  12. Yes it does. Stupid and experienced tend not to be found together. The guys who were in these situations (yes Matt, pilot chutes in tow) have seen and been in situations that have led them to the decisions that they've made. And they are willing to constantly revaluate their decisions. I was talking to Per Flare at the boogie about the fact that he doesn't carry a hook knife. I forget how many line overs he said he has had, something like 5 (3 skydiving, 2 BASE or vice versa) and he's always cleared them or would ride them in (he very lightly loads his base canopy). I may not agree with him but that's experience and I wouldn't disagree with his decision or call him stupid. Do not mix up what you think is doing the right thing with what others think is doing the right thing. Yes and he learnt from this! Time. You have nothing above your head and you will die soon. Get something out before impact and don't waste time cutting away. I think these guys had already attempted to clear the PC by changing their attitude or hitting the side of the container, taking up valuable time. Risk of fouling your reserve. A main that releases when the tension is reduced after the reserve deploys could foul your reserve as it passes by. Chance in a million. There are stories of people who have not cutaway their main, deployed a reserve that malfunctioned, and where then able to succesfully deploy their main to save their life. Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live
  13. The fact that they were jumping wingsuits bore no relation to the fact that they didn't cutaway. They would have done the same thing whatever discipline they were doing. Both of these guys are very experienced skydivers and have prepared their actions prior to an emergency occuring. There is no right or wrong course to take in this situation. Either way could just as easily save your life or end it. The is a chance a main with deploy once the tension is released when the reserve is activated but it isn't guaranteed so you can't say "of course". If you really want to have the to-cutaway or not-to-cutaway discussion again, this should really be in Safety and Training. p.s. My planned response to this situation is to cutaway. 16. ;-D It's difficult to get to the windows in the Herc because of the seat netting so getting a lock is tricky, but I'll try. Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live
  17. Now there's an idea! Problem is, minimum group size here is 7 and I'm not sure I want to be trying to jump it with a group straight away! Plus my exits aren't the greatest! :-D Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live
  18. I could say something here but I think I'll just leave it at what Mac said, it's Rich Orford's better half! Hopefully, the Sky+ box will have recorded it and I'll get it onto skydivingmovies.com when I get back from Sweden. Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live
  19. Fordy, Andy Scott and myself had a nice 3-way sunset jump from a Bell Jet Ranger last night. Attached are some snaps. Nice 60 seconds+ from 7000 feet down to 3000 and tracking right over the top of the dz from some good visuals for those on the ground who weren't in the bar! What is really nice apart from the chopper, the view, the sunset and the fun is that the jumps are organised by a local club outside of the boogie, and with the mass Hercules drops finished for the days and very few canopies in the air, swooping is allowed :-D See the attached photos. Thanks to Per for agreeing to get off with us to keep the balance right for the pilot! 406 is Mr Ford doing a cheeky little flyby whilst I'm under canopy (0.3x lens) and 408 is him looking rather pleased with himself afterwards. We are now jumping again after a weather hold, and for those of you who are wondering when I'm going to shut up and jump, I'm on load 34 in about an hour and a half! 20. Well, had a fun exit on my beer jump from a Hercules! Was in the third row to exit from a ten way-ish. Side on to take a turning step hopping off backwards. Didn't look up enough and an open leg wing flipped me down. As I looked back up, the prop wash caught me and whipped me around. I couldn't believe the speed of how quickly it started. I was spinning on my back with a fairly strong force. I briefly thought about cutting away my wings and had my hands on my loops, but my arms were closed and I had a lot of altitude to play with so I remembered what I teach my first timers; bring your knees up and then arch/flip over out of it. I took a tremendous amount of strength to bring my knees up (before you see them in the video) but that started to slow it down straight away and I was able to arch and flip out of it. You can see the video here I was able to get back on a level with my group but I wasn't able to close the distance before break-off; just too far away. Well, it's cool to finally have the experience to back up what I teach! Although on a Classic or GTi from a smaller aircraft with a regular run in, it's unlikely to happen, but the recovery is proven. It can't have been that bad, when we got down Scary Perry looked me in the eyes and said so as I didn't have the bloodshot skysurfer's eyes! But it was fast enough for me thankyou! I'll try and get Vesa's outside video which is quiet impressive, although brief as I go tumbling out of view! My subsequent exits have been better. Although I was able to get above a skyvan running it at 135 knots, I've only managed to stay on a level with the Herc so far. I've been too scared to open my wings straight away! Now my exits are better I might start to try it! :-S p.s. I use to term "flat spin" but it was more of a flat spin on my side, if you get my meaning! 21. A guy had just turned up with his Sugar Glider here at the Herc boogie. He's only ever jumped it with another Sugar Glider so we are looking forward to see how it performs! See attached photo (DZ wireless LAN is very cool!) Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

Skin now predicts number 1000 will be achieved on September the 29th of this year, but then he was 3 months late with his prediction for number 900! (Although we have more data now ;-P) Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live
  23. Very, very cool. So he was the Father Christmas looking fellow in the L&B newton ringsight advert! (Couldn't find a picture on the L&B website - shame) Had a lump in my throat when watching the post jump interview with his son. BSBD Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live

    Welcome 924

Extrapolating the recent trend by eye I reckon 1000 will be achieved somewhere towards the end of the first trimester in 2005. I should really get Skin to work his magic on an uptodate prediction Skydiving Fatalities - Cease not to learn 'til thou cease to live
