  1. Dude, you were replying to me when you threw your bet on the table. So you're saying the bet is off? No problem then.
  2. I think jump buddy is the person you call at 1:00 AM when you're bored and lonely...and you know she is too.
  3. 1 Farm jump ticket on the line for the Hughes / GSP fight with chinagirl - David

  5. ... And your wager is what?
  6. One of the things that I've noticed about SDM, and this thread as well, is that the idea of a "good video" is split. Some people will think that you're talking about the quality of the flying done by the skydivers in the video. Others will think that you're talking about the skill of the videographer, editor, and the quality of the final video. I would bet that people who want to put themselves in close proximity to students (that would be instructors and coaches) could derive some sort of a benefit from watching the student videos on SDM. My favorite AFF video (for sheer educational value and a little bit of "what's going to happen next") is: http://www.skydivingmovies.com/ver2/pafiledb.php?action=file&id=4799 . edited to fix URL - David SCR #14809 "our attitude is the thing most capable of keeping us safe" (look, grab, look, grab, peel, punch, punch, arch)
  7. Hughes (but don't mistake me as a Hughes fan) Silva Machida Clementi Palelei And you wager is what?
  8. excessively enthusiastic? I didn't read the threads (so I may end up looking foolish), but here are the other threads he's started or participated in: 1. line twist first jump 2. aff first stage done had to come here 3. can skydiving cure depression 4. weight problem 5. In case of my death 6. will a canon ball position get you out of a flat spin It feels like a really weird CSI connect-the-dots mystery. Where's David Caruso when you need him?
  9. NOTHING EVER happens at The Farm... Shhhhhhhh...say nothing...
  10. I really expected to see Justin in there. Maybe Justin's cell-phone dance video will one day be as popular as the Star Wars Kid.
  11. Yes, better than cats. SCR #14809 "our attitude is the thing most capable of keeping us safe" (look, grab, look, grab, peel, punch, punch, arch)
  12. Atari made an arcade game in 1978 that was pretty fun. You can play their "Sky Diver" game using MAME.
  13. Another hobby of mine has to do with spotting very small (relatively) objects against the background of the sky. In that activity, the mass of participants found that alternating black and white panels worked well due to the contrast provided regardless of the sky's variations.
  14. I heard about a study 10 years ago or so, that found that the best visibility color in a "natural" environment was neon pink. Who knew?
  15. Would you at least agree that I never gave advice? Even when asked about my knowledge, I deferred. I've learned my lesson man. No need to pound me indirectly. - David
  16. Dude, I give you a compliment, I was impressed with your knowledge - and invite you to teach us all and so we all could learn more... But you reply with my most hated statement on the internet. We have to assume that everyone on here, from one to 1,000,000 jumps, will not attempt something they fully don't understand without learning fully about it. It is not my job to hide information from someone by saying "talk to your instructor" because there is no magical time when we stop learning from everyone else. I was just joking man. I understood your post, but wanted to post a humorous reply myself. I have, however, learned to stay away from challenges on the forums, as most of them are just from people trying to see if they can make a sub-low-timer look stupid. Any mention of jump numbers sends up a red flag for me. My real answer was something to the effect of inertia, angular momentum, and gravity constantly working to put the pilot under the canopy. I came across this in my experience (don't laugh) after trying to get a Manta 260 to stall. I would hold full deflection for 15 seconds and nothing would happen. So, I thought about how to get the canopy structure unstable, and tried to do it with a fast transition...and it worked. Scott Miller and I talked about it during a break in his Essential Skills course and he explained how a dynamic stall works. I tried making that same change in the first stage of my two-stage flare and it got me out in front faster while still giving me plenty of toggle stroke to finish the flare. [Disclaimer: Doing anything that I mentioned above may kill you, don't do what I did, don't read the forums, go talk to your instructor!] (my attempt at a disclaimer to keep the noob patrol at bay) PS - I actually skipped the parts of Brians book that dealt with swooping as I was trying to stay with the mantra of..."asking my instructor". It's all cool. - David
  17. One thing that Brian doesn't touch on (to the best of my memory on the SDR episodes as well as in the Parachute and Its Pilot) is the speed at which the toggles are pulled down for the primary stage of the flare. He may talk about this in his canopy piloting courses, however. It is important to note that the distance you pull your toggles is as important as how fast you pull them (depending upon the canopy in question). - David SCR #14809 "our attitude is the thing most capable of keeping us safe" (look, grab, look, grab, peel, punch, punch, arch)
  18. chinagirl Oops. I thought it said "Which DZ.commer would make the best Dot-matrix."
  19. Because in a total of 14 posts to dz.com, you're the first person to ask that question. (he's only made 14 posts and hasn't double-posted before)

I fail to see the problem here.
  21. I have a Casio that is 20 years old this year. I've replaced the battery twice, and the plastic housing and band twice. It keeps on running like new. It just works.
