You could try Alt-F4 if you're running Windows, or Command-Q if you're running MacOS. Either way it might help you find the solution that you're looking for. - David SCR #14809 "our attitude is the thing most capable of keeping us safe" (look, grab, look, grab, peel, punch, punch, arch) -
And for those without Mike G and his pressure chamber around, another option is to ask an experienced jumper to wear it as well as his regular one on a jump to check it fwiw... even though my alti was bought new, i was advised to get this done before i jumped it (admittedly i had only just gone solo at the time). Maybe that's a good idea. Mine stuck once or twice during the first "vacuuming" but was smooth during re-pressurization. So, Mike ran it through again to be sure, and things were fine. This alti had sat in a closet for a year before I bought it. If someone was wearing it to do a check, I'd ask that they watch the needle throughout the descent. That's not always practical, is it? I guess you could just train your eyes or go up with two altis and compare readings throughout the descent. At least you'd be symmetrical. I'm with you on that one. It's funny that experienced skydivers would do this (maybe there's a more appropriate word than funny...scary?). I knew my own personal answer to my question before I asked it, but wanted to see what the experienced jumpers here thought. Who knows, maybe some of you agree with the lady in question. - David FWIW: I bought a used mechanical altimeter a while back and had Mike G. run it through the pressure chamber before using it on a jump. Good post overall, and some good points. For the experienced jumpers on this forum: is this a recommended practice? Should a mechanical altimeter be adjusted to match a second mechanical altimeter during a climb to altitude? - David SCR #14809 "our attitude is the thing most capable of keeping us safe" (look, grab, look, grab, peel, punch, punch, arch)

As I'm sitting in a three-day Flash ActionScripting class...yes, pretty funny stuff. Of course, it's better with "Black Betty" playing in the background (I was watching the Chicks Rock video from SDM.com and left it playing while watching the swf). - David SCR #14809 "our attitude is the thing most capable of keeping us safe" (look, grab, look, grab, peel, punch, punch, arch)

Wouldn't this require all of the suspension lines to be equal length, the stabilizers to be removed, and the arch of the canopy to be flattened? Or gravity to stop working? - David SCR #14809 "our attitude is the thing most capable of keeping us safe" (look, grab, look, grab, peel, punch, punch, arch)

Are you sure that wind will not turn a canopy? Unless you are 3-dimensionally symmetrical (you would be a sphere, by the way), you are going to find that you have a profile which has less wind resistance than the others. What are the stabilizers on a modern square canopy used for anyhow? - David SCR #14809 "our attitude is the thing most capable of keeping us safe" (look, grab, look, grab, peel, punch, punch, arch)

I've had my G4 Powerbook for 3 years and it's been turned on for almost 3 years now. I only shut it down a few times during the first year or so, and during upgrades. Like a freakin rock. I long for a new MacbookPro...but I also long for a rig of my own. Whats up with Perris and skydivingmovies.com?
denete replied to martin-o's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
You could be a slutty Skyride gift certificate. Drive 3 hours to a party in another state and then try to get someone to use you. When nobody uses you, take a dump on a random unsuspecting consumer. Get video. -
Pulling cut-away cables fully out of the housings
denete replied to denete's topic in Safety and Training
Yeah man. My plan is to be there this weekend. I've been sick and haven't been able to clear my left ear for about 5 days now, but I'm hoping it will return to normal soon. It squeaks when I try to clear it. Odd. - David SCR #14809 "our attitude is the thing most capable of keeping us safe" (look, grab, look, grab, peel, punch, punch, arch) -

I never knew you Tonto, and I'm very sorry for that. Thank you for all that you gave to people here who never had a chance to meet you. I knew that he had an influence on me here on the forums, and I was sure to let him know. I wrote to him: He replied: His words are so true. I'll keep them in mind as I continue down this road. That worked for me. I'm not a rigger, but I recently (thanks to skydiving) took up sewing. I had purchased an "el cheapo" used jumpsuit that was very snug, and I fell pretty fast to begin with. Anyhow, I decided to modify the jumpsuit. I bought a $50 Brother sewing machine found on craigslist (don't start on how poor quality the Brother products are, I'm a hack and I don't expect it to be perfect or last forever). I spent a couple of hours with a seam-ripper and took the jumpsuit apart at the outside seams (clam-shell style). I bought a couple of yards of similar weight material, ran it through the washing machine, made a simple pattern based on the seam I had opened, cut material, and started sewing the "Franken-Suit" back together. By the end of this phase of the Franken-Suit project, I had a good handle on all of the stitch styles that I could do. There are still a few seam types that I want to figure out, but this was a great start for me. With almost 4" of extra material hemmed on the legs, the next phase is booties, or swoop-cords, or new grippers, or maybe a whole new jumpsuit. Just go sew...but watch out for your wife's machine. It would suck to screw it up...unless she wants a new one. I'm not a rigger (did I say that already). - David
