Would WL affect the results (positive or negative) from getting a toggle line-locked by pulling it down during a spin? A spinning canopy that is allowed to continue will eventually line-lock anyhow, wont it? Last time out to the DZ, I went to deploy and stuck my finger in the deployment handle (tube type). After my microsecond of panic, I pulled it out and deployed. A search here came up with the suggestion of filling the tube with cork. Any thoughts on doing this (pros/cons), or what the best method would be to hold it in place? I was thinking compression of the cork then insert it and let it swell. I don't like the idea of adhesives just because of how they might chemically affect the tape that attaches the handle to the pilot chute...but of course I'm no chemist. "Great Stuff" or other expanding foam came to mind as well. Yes, I could switch to {insert your preferred handle type here}, but I wanted to see about trying to improve my current setup. And by the way, what do you call the tube type handle? The others all have catchy names like "pud", "hackey", and "monkey's fist". I always thought "The Club" had a great value-to-security ratio. Putting one on the golf cart at the DZ might be a good idea. SCR #14809 "our attitude is the thing most capable of keeping us safe" (look, grab, look, grab, peel, punch, punch, arch) -

Not a TI, but my personal rule is 12 hours. I got a "quit yer sandbagging" from a high jump-number jumper over the 4th of July weekend when I wouldn't jump until after 3:30 PM. (I still blame it on the deceptive tactics of MicDuran's PineappleAssKickers). Disclaimer: I only have 34 jumps and I don't know crap. TTYI Why do people step backward when leaving the step?! I watched some videos of 182 hop-n-pop exits last year before I ever had an idea that I would one day jump from a 182. After watching people get unstable in several different situations, I asked myself the same question then too...why would you ever step off toward the back?! I've only done one 182 exit, and my instruction prior to that jump was to get my left foot on the step, hold the strut, step off, stay stable, and deploy. Easy enough. Because my mind wasn't full of too many "thou shalt always" or "thou shalt never" 182 commandments on how to step off, I analyzed the step off carefully before exiting. Here's why I didn't step backward. If you step backward, you are leaving the step with your body out of symmetry. I don't mean that it isn't just centered on the relative wind, I mean that it isn't symmetrical. Does stepping toward the back somehow help you in a way that I haven't thought of yet? Do some planes have huge tires or something that you have to clear? I know that stepping of toward the back puts your head closer to the stabilizer...but that's not a benefit (in my book). Here's how I did my sole 182 exit. I might use the word "you", but I'm not saying that anyone should ever do what I do (TTYI). Left hand on the door frame, right hand on the strut, right foot on the step, add left foot on the step, left hand on the strut, right foot off the strut and into the air beside the step (not behind), both knees bent slightly, weight over your knees, right hand off the strut (and onto the invisible strut symmetrical to your left hand position). Then, I did what might be best described as a jumping jack with my legs. This can actually be practiced. Just draw a 182 step on the ground and practice that side-step jump. When your feet hit the ground, they should hit at the same time, a line between them should be parallel to your jump run, and your left foot should be outside the step outline by a comfortable distance. When I say side-step jump, I don't really mean a "jump". Just clear the ground (step) enough to get your foot outside the step outline...don't think about jumping up. Arms don't push, pull, or shove the airplane. You just let go with your hands and move your arms symmetrically into a good arch position. Because your right leg will be out into the air just a little bit before your left foot leaves the step, lightweight folks may see a bit of torque. Don't worry about it. If you hold a good wide-stance arch, that torque should be dampened after about 1 cycle. Anyhow, that's how I did it. Video on youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MWo8a3WNOA, so you can judge for yourself and help me understand any points I may be missing on my method. - David Disclaimer: I only have 34 jumps and I don't know crap. Labor Day at Skydive the Farm ($20.08 jumps)

If it is anything like it was this last weekend, get your friends out there early! On Saturday I think there were around 60 tandems. I'm not exaggerating. It was an army of TIs. (Disclaimer: I'm not an instructor, but I do some informal coaching, and non-skydiving teaching) Sure. Keep it simple, crystal-clear, and un-ambiguous. Beyond that - Within a certain range of "standardization", however (since you may not be their only instructor as students), the specific choice of words should simply flow comfortably from your own natural style of speaking. Style of speech is like handwriting - each person's is somewhat unique, but still gets the message across. If your students "get" the point your brain is trying to convey, you've done it right. (Disclaimer: I'm not an instructor, I'm not experienced, but I do some thinking, and non-skydiving teaching) I want to grab instead of reach. Reaching is part of my "look" action (I don't look and then wait until I see the handle before reaching). I look and reach at the same time, then I grab. If I think "look - reach - look...", then I've shifted to looking for my reserve handle before I've completed a grip on my cutaway handle. Grabbing can only be described as a panic maneuver after the fact. Maybe "grip" or "grasp" would be a more proper term. You can say it in French for all I care, but either way, get that sucker in your hand. Back when I used to play a lot of golf, we'd stand on the tee behind whoever was hitting and quote this in a stage whisper. When John Daly came along, and COULD actually hit an 8-iron that far, the quote kinda lost its ludicrosity. Well yeah...if you're smashed like Daly on his way to a meeting.
