  1. Put enough monkeys in a room with a computer and they'll come up with Windows Vista? Hmm... sounds familiar "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  2. You are spying on me via that webcam i was forced to buy with my laptop? "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  3. As implied, nope. But it was more wishful thinking than an actual request. Then again, I don't really give a damn. I just expect shit I pay for to work. 4. And,if you have a tongue piercing, watch out it doesn't catch in the braces. It would be a very humiliating (though entertaining) experience at the emergency room. 5. Well, excuse me, but if Vista assumes (and rightfully so) that I am too stoopid to check for updates manually, evaluate their importance to and impact on my system and then again manually click the 'download' button, then why does it assume that I am intelligent enough to see that I don't meet the system requirements? I bought this laptop half a year ago with Vista already on it, I never asked for it. The only things I do to my system is install the recommended updates as I am a total nitwit where teknolology is concerned. I'd rather they'd given me XP or whatever with my laptop and a full version of microsoft office and a decent virus scanner. 6. Can't say i totally disagree with what he's saying. The emphasis on freefall IS a lot higher. Just look at the licence requirements; how many tasks are focused on freefall and how many on the actual canopy flight? Sure, the pattern and flare are very important and (de)briefed thoroughly, but there is a lot more to parachuting than being predictable on final and timing your flare well. 7. This link? I'm confused - just got the damn account and still am completely at see as to how the site works.. "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  8. So was I, against my better judgement. Unfortunately though, people with Down's syndrome tend to function at the level of (for instance) a five year old, at which 'age' they probably cannot be relied on to have developed the right judgement to deal with emergencies. I'm very afraid that no amount of tandems can prepare him for the real thing. But I really hope I'm wrong and that Casey or someone like him will surprise me.
  9. Actually, this is not a hate thread, though I hate Vista well and thoroughly. Thing is, I tried to install an "important update", a 4.5 GB 'service package' to my laptop just now, which resulted in a fatal error. System repair fpund itself unable to repair the problem, and simply shut down the PC again. Let's just say that I'm fortunate that my on-line backup was up to date. Anyone else experience similar problems lately? "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

    Good Book

Joyce's Dubliners is good - Just the stories of everyday people who, surprisingly, all live in Dublin. Ulysses - couldn't get trough it. I put it down during the scene where the guys were planning to go to the beach and never looked back. The way the dialogue is written is just too annoying for me to enjoy the story. 12. I have to agree. His text doesn't look very professional, if you'll forgive me "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  13. Well, your bed probably screams your name too. But I still curse with the name of God or Jesus. Part of the object of cursing is 'shock value' for other people. Besides, as some author once said, it takes a pretty stoic atheist to dance around after they hit their thumb and swearing "aarrggh! Obsolete concept of an outmoded belief system!!" (paraphrased) Back to the OP, Big bang / creationism. If given the choice between the two, I'd definitely go for the big bang. However, that doesn't answer everything either. because what was so big that it could go bang and create the universe? There must have been something. I am, however a firm believer in evolution. But who knows how the very first spark of life originated... conditions exactly so that certain molecules would interact in this specific way, ultimately leading to something as complex as amoebas, bacteria and even multi cellular organisms? Sounds pretty damn miraculous to me "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

    Good Book

Sci-fi: Dan Simmons: Hyperion/the fall of Hyperion/Endymion/the [rise] of Endymion. All nice and thick, each should last you a week. Humour: Jasper Fforde The Big over Easy/the Fourth bear Easy reading, no need to think while going through this book. Interestingly, the writer managed to take a really dumb and silly idea and turn it into good novels. Fantasy: George R.R. Martin: "a song of Ice and Fire": A game of Throses/A clash of Kings/A Storm of Swords/ A Feast for Crows / A Dance with Dragons (and two more to come) You have to read it. The interactions between the human characters are so complex and well described, you keep finding new stuff even on the third reread. 16. 12 mph gusting to 18, that's 5 m/s gusting to 8. Tough one.. While this is (just) within legal limits for someone with less than 200 jumps, I'm not entirely certain about my comfort zone. It all depends on the wind direction and expected turbulence, possible outs downwind etc. I guess this is something I'd discuss with manifest or the instructor on duty before making my decision. But if I'd be on the plane and heard about tandems being grounded, there's no way in hell I'm going to exit. 17. and not everyone who has, isn't "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  18. But I do practice my cutaways. Every three months I am suspended in a harness from the ceiling and an instructor watches while I cut away and pull the reserve ripcord. After that they give me some horror scenarios and ask me how I'd deal with it. Then they talk it over with me, giving suggestions and corrections. While nothing like the real deal, thinking about this stuff helps me solve an actual emergency. In addition to this, which is a requirement in the Dutch BSR, I touch my handles every time before I get onto the plane and just before exit. Occasionally, but especially when i am jumping a new harness/container system (which you regularly do before you got your own gear) I touch my handles in freefall and afterwards under canopy as well. Similarly, once I have gotten to know my current canopy, practicing a crosswind landing and yet later agian a downwinder with a steady five knots will prepare me for an unexpected downwinder in worse wind conditions. Not because landing downwind with 5 kts is not different from fifteen knots, because it is - and radically so - but because of the mindset. After all, having tried it under semi-controlled circumstances taught me that I know what to do, namely flare and PLF for all I'm worth. Too much rconfidence may hurt, but so does too little "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  19. Pilots, could you please explain to me what the added value of a commercial rating over a private one is? What's the difference? "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
