  1. Now that's a FIRST.. "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  2. I voted no. The one jump that I'll need an AAD because some joker knocked my lights out in freefall is not going to be the same jump that I wasn't using an AAD. Besides, I never jumped without an AAD before, so that would mean beer... 8. First, I am very sorry that you have been through that, lame as that may sound. Me, I draw the line somewhere before leaving marks, but WAY before using implements. A swat doesn't necessarily need to actually hurt in order to be punishment. Additionally I agree with Thanatos that spanking should be a last resort after the other possibilities have been exhausted and would like to add that for a next offence the child shouldn't be simply spanked 'because that punishment worked last time too'. *** I also strongly disagree with is that punishment is teaching Authority... that should NEVER be the goal of punishment. No, i rather meant that punishment without showing autority is ineffective, useless or even counter-productive. In other words, you cannot teach discipline without having authority. 10. Oh come on - there is a huge difference between spanking and hitting, though I admit there are those who confuse physical abuse with disciplin. I was spanked exactly once and I hardly even felt the swat. And boy, did I earn it In itself, I'm not against spanking - but any disciplinary action which leaves marks is going way to far. I completely agree that children need to be protected. I have no kids of my own, but in the sixteen years that I have supervised children during summer camp I have seen all kinds. With some it's 'disappointment' which works best, others you talk to severely, yet others have to be yelled at. Only one child came close to being too much to handle, until I found that I needed to disciplin him, ignore further bad behaviour and reward good behaviour, for instance, ignoring statements containing the word "dickhead", but answering questions starting with "Dennis", as he sometimes forgot he was angry when seeing something interesting or confusing. But whichever way works best, it's not about the punishment itself, it's about showing them Authority. And for those of you who now see me as a volatile monster, if something's wrong it's ME they run to, not the 'please do not do that sweety' crowd*). Why? Because i have also learnt that you must not only be able to discipline child #1 but also to in the same breath turn around to comfort child #2 who has been stung by a wasp or whatever. be fair, in other words. *) I don't mean the posters on here, but the kind of person who keeps telling the children not to do that 'or else you get punished' and then simply ignore the child when they continue misbehaving. 16. I don't understand. Should I have said "greatly reduce" your speed? And the question was about going downwind, ie being upwind relative to the DZ, right? So presenting a larger profile will help you make it back. When going upwind, ie being downwind from the DZ I agree that you should try to reduce drag by rpesenting a smaller profile. 20. Wow.. The women I usually hang out with or date casually are quite different. I guess there's a middle road somewhere. The nice guy thing is bull - noone wants a jerk, it's just that noone wants a pushover either. To me at least this guy seems very superficial, and to be telling men to be the dominant personality in a relationship, rahter than assume equal roles/compromise. Poorly worded, i know, but I hope you get the idea. 'Be yourself' may be a cliche, but it's absolutely true. You could pretend to have a completely differen, 'mr. right' personality, but anyone worth the air they breathe will sooner or later find you out. 22. Low jump numbers or not, this I feel I can confidently answer. In this scenario the wind is moderately strong and coming from behind you so it's blowing you back to the DZ. Going to deep brakes does eliminate the canopy's 'natural' forward speed but also minimises altitude loss, therefore maximising the time that the wind can blow you back and increasing your range. To profit even more from this effect, you try to catch as much wind as possible by presenting a large profile.
  23. Yesh! I finally located the falshe teesh that blew out in freefall! "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  24. clicky This guy claims to have dated models, actresses and what have you. Yet IMO he comes across as a pathetic loser who is desperately trying to validate himself while failing to understand even the most basic thing about women: they too are just people. Right back at ya, buddy "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  25. *shakes head* As an experienced skydiver it's YOUR responsibility to talk to newbies like Chris and myself in order to prevent us from making the same mistakes you did when you were just new. So kudos to peregrinerose who DOES know this. Or failing that, at least read the whole thread before degrading it into a flamefest. If your final statement wasn't a PA, I could smack it right back at ya.
