If we did, noone would watch anymore. Still, I reckon that the low, rumbling sound you hear continously while the olympics are on is produced by the ancient Greek athletes turning in their shallow graves - over and over again... Funny stuff you or other jumpers have done
Baksteen replied to chrismgtis's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Being peer-pressured into making the next load, I packed the rental sabre 190 even less neat then usual. It was going to be a H&P anyway.. it wouldn't matter if the opening would be a little brisker than usual. Once in the plane, the pilot called out to say we'd go to twelve rather than five - H&P's at five are allowed, at twelve they aren't. SO I had to take my trash pack to terminal.. I exited, fell to five and reached for my hackey with my right while closing my eyes and crossing my left index and middle finger thinking "oooohh shit - this is gonna hurt!" I threw my pilotchute and was amazed by the nicest opening ever with that canopy. I never put any effort in packing that canopy neatly from that point on, that's for sure "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom -
At my home DZ students are obligated to pack their own chutes. Instructors ore some id..people who have volunteered for it, check the packjobs at certain stages to see the students don't mess it up. When I was new(er) I used to think this was standard policy everywhere "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

In addition to checking my gear before I put it on, I always ask someone else to give me a pin check. They might notice something I missed.

How ridiculous is the euphemism "African-American"

:3:0 One hop and pop at six, exiting last. As I was reaching for my hackey the pilot flew the 182 in a tight curve above me and waved. I tossed my pilotchute and waved back. One two-way, floater got unstable on exit and stayed on her back looking at me for over ten seconds. (Shut up) I gave her a 'flip over' signal, but we couldn't manage a linkup after that. Another H&P practicing flat turns. "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

I just go on a date to have fun and see where we'll end up, so to speak. I don't know.. if she's not ready (or I for that matter) I am willing to wait until we both are. If there's merely a number that needs to be fulfilled, be it three months or three dates I think she and I might not be each other's type after all. "Good" for both of you? Maybe you're just horrible in bed... Because like you yourself noted all that invested time, money, and energy exposing yourself, learning someone else, and starting a foundation for commitment is the basis for good (or even better) sex? Knowing each other well enough means that you're comfortable enough to deal with any of those compatibility issues. I'm not doing it right for you? Then talk to me, or I'll think I am. My ego can take it. After all, we know each other well enough.

How ridiculous is the euphemism "African-American"
Baksteen replied to birdlike's topic in Speakers Corner
You might argue that many (most?) of them have never even seen Africa but on TV. Over here calling people blacks ('zwarten') has a decidedly racist flavour to it nowadays. Instead you're supposed to call them either 'allochtoon' (alien) or Moroccan, Turk, Surinam or whatever. Which may sound just as negative depending on how you say it. Bottom line, IMO it's you that's racist, not the words you use. Same... I could die right now and be happy with my life. I couldn't handle not being able to walk though Yeah, but think of all the things I haven't done yet if I'd die now. Free fly, fly wing suit, BASE jump, swoop, ground launch... By your interpretation of this defination I am freefalling when lying on the floor - my velocity is constant (0 m/s) and I will retain that velocity indefinitely. One might argue that other forces are present in this example, the floor 'supports' you and 'prevents' you from falling, thereby keeping your velocity constant. But this is the same in the tunnel - in a neutral arch, your downward velocity does not change because the air 'supports' you, pushing you up cancels out the force with which you are pulled down. ----- Completely aside from definitions, I do not think tunnel time should count to total skydiving freefall or vice versa simply because tunnel and skydiving are so different. There is a lot of carryover between skills, but while you have to compensate for level in the tunnel, there is only so far you can drift apart. Other things like altitude/time awareness etc. are focussed on differently too. Someone with ten hrs of tunnel time will pick up the FS/freefly/whatever bits of skydiving relatively quickly, but there are also 'foreign' skills needed to get there, i.e. tracking. Alternatively, someone with ten hrs. of freefall time might pick up tunnelling relatively quickly, but first he has to get used to having to stay in almost exactly the same spot to avoid the walls as well as the fact that in the air you can 'cheat' a lot more than in the tunnel (or so it seemed to me). Hence, if I go to a DZ claiming ten hrs of freefall time, that means people will assume certain things about my skills that I may not be able to live up to completely. Sure I might fly a decent slot in a bigway, but how about separation? Give up your job, move to a tent at Eloy DZ (good weather) and empty your savings account to get full time, 1 on 1 coaching from the likes of Brian Germain or Scott Miller. Make multiple jumps a day, seven days a week and at least 500 jumps total (supervised by them) and before you know it you're the best skydiver around. Otherwise, take it easy - unless you happen to take a fancy to Wolverine's Titanium Bones. --- Seriously though, I've been an excited newbie too. Still am, in fact. Remember, the goal of skydiving is not doing everything as soon as possible, but having fun getting there - however long it may take you. Point in case, I graduated my RW-course only two weeks ago. Does that make me a poor skydiver? "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

pull altitude for more advanced jumpers.
Baksteen replied to skittles_of_SDC's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
FS - I pull at 3k. Solos, it varies. I love canopy time; especially now I got a new canopy that I haven't completely figureed out yet. Regardless of canopy, when jumping solo from the Porter, i like opening at 5k so I get to go out last and can sit on the seat in the back rather than be squashed to death on the bench or sity on the floor having to perform all kinds of acrobatic manoeuvres prior to exit "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom -
I think it might be interesting to see how a larger Storm compares to a smaller Lightning if we play around a little with WL. I'm not talking big formations, but CReW pups getting their first coaching jumps. The reason I'm saying this is because WL is limited to max. 1.3 and canopy size to min. 150 for newer jumpers (100-400 jumps) in the Netherlands, while 100 jumps is the lowest number allowed for both Storm and Lightning. (OTOH one can jump a Triathlon at 25 jumps, provided it's loaded at or under 1.1 and at least 160 sq ft.)
