AFF 7 and I want to have fun!!!
Baksteen replied to justintime1983's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
This is true. Which is why everyone tells people to talk to their instructors rather than to talk to the experienced jumpers at their DZ. But Piece, as you're probably well aware there is a huge difference between talking to a low-timer about their skydiving and giving advice When I saw a first jump student land off, downwind without flaring*, I went over to him to see if he's OK (the instructor needed to bat down two more students) and then ask them how it was, saying nothing more than 'OK' or 'uh-huh' every now and again with the occasional 'cool' mixed in. *Later, when the next load was landing he asked when one of his buddies was on final if that buddy shouldn't start turning now. Turned out this guy had remembered something about having to turn at 250 feet (or even a designated spot), except he was already flying into the wind at 750.. Oh, and by the way, don't bash his intructors for "teaching a poor fjc"... all the other students landed OK. -
AFF 7 and I want to have fun!!!

Very well said. I may be a low timer, but I haven't forgotten yet that I too have had to start at the very beginning - and that wasn't even very long ago. You might hang with the experienced folk now, but talking to the cool dudes doesn't make you one. Keep this in mind when repying to someone with (even) less jumps than you have: we've all been there, and we all used to be ignorant. Same here, though I'm but an amateur musician. For me it's the other way around; music is a distraction to me at best.. I tend to really listen to music (you'll know what I mean, as when playing it), I cannot treat it like 'background noise'. Besides, hearing background noise while listening to music (such as wind or engines) annoys the hell out of me. At work I do liven up the dreary tasks by listening to music, but that's more like I'm concentrating on the music while at the same time automatically performing the task.. Fuck 'em. Hang with the people who ARE open to newbies/visiting jumpers/whatever your 'deficiency'. Keep in mind though that in almost no social setting groups will rush out to talk to you - it's you who'll have to take the initiative to approach the group. On the plus side, if you get snarled at/cold shouldered, at least you c an comfort yourself with the knowledge that these people aren't worth any of your time in the first place. Exactly. AFF 7 and I want to have fun!!!
Baksteen replied to justintime1983's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
When you are skydiving, your body (or indeed your canopy) is deflecting the air around it, causing a sort of area of lower pressure above you while in freefall or behind you while under canopy. This is called the burble. So if you'd track under your instructor, he'd come into your burble and fall faster, possibly onto your back - especially if he wasn't expecting it. When there is other people with you on the skydive, it is never a good plan to whimsically do stuff - they aren't expecting it and cannot know whether you've got your stuff under control. So best advice I can give you online is to discuss things with your instructor. It probably will not be the tracking/barrel roll, but if you're good enough he might include "something fun" in the dive plan. Biggest issue I have with your post though, you mention you want to have fun on your AFF level. I see a lot of students say this here lately Isn't the process of learning how to skydive, like - I dunno, a lot of fun? Speaking about trolls, thank you for this valuable contribution. "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom -
Certainly - As long as it's clear that it's better never to end up in such a situation, for instance by not performing radical manoeuvres for fun while below 2.5k or whatever the recommended altitude is for you. Er.. I still have a problem here... you mean 1000 meters, right? Below 1000 feet it's not wise to cutaway -at my experience level I'd just get as big a ball of crap over my head as possible and hope for the best.. I was under a fully functional main at 2.5K - Having exited at 7k, this means that I must have pulled between 3-3.5k, in other words, static-line exit altitude EDIT: For Dutch students the hard deck is at 2k by the way. Id like to down size but.....
Baksteen replied to buggsyboo's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
+0,5 I agree that there might be another 150 out there that might prove more of a challenge to you, but just jump different mains - but don't be too quick to write off semi-ellipticals or 'even' boring old squares. You'll know when you've found your soulmate Not that I'm an instructor or anything, but people told me the Spectre could do nothing but fall out of the sky really fast. Being the stubborn eejit that I am, I still tried the Spectre (WL 1.1) and was pleasantly surprised by a canopy which could provide snappy turns, yet still get me back from a long spot if I yanked on my rears and be forgiving enough to make all those upjumper mistakes and live to tell about it.. Size isn't everything - it's what you can do with it that counts. You mean like, directly after the jump where the 'offended party' got a big scare? Happened to me once too - Was forced into a scary out (the only option except a tree) and when i got back to the DZ I tried to reasonably discuss with the guy why I wasn't very happy with him, but what with the adrenalin and all, people in the next town could hear me shout at him. When i calmed down I apologised, of course and no harm done. But other people only heard me shout at the guy so who knows (or cares) what they think about the incident. But that's skydivers for you - always ready to gossip. Even the anonymous dudes. Hmm. Might be I should call her "Matilda". As I understand it, 'Waltzing Matilda' means something along the lines of "travelling with all of one's possesion in a bundle (swag) on one's back", which is almost true when I have my rig on, while a 'swagman' is some kind of tramp or hobo. 'Nuff said. "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

I wonder how this so-called women's rights committee feels about portraying women as being good with children or being smart or caring etc. and coming to the rescue of a clumsy oaf of a guy in a lumberjack shirt bungles everything up... I've got an altimeter, an audible, a time sense and my eyes any of which might fail me for whatever reason whenever I least expect it. I was practicing tracking when I had only a few freefals under my belt (SL student) and therefore had no timesense to speak of. I was trying to assume the tracking position but had trouble to get going. Of course I couldn't see my altimeter as my hands were behind me and since I was jumping only for a short time I didn't have an audible yet. However, at some point I looked down and had the bigest scare of my life. I immediately pulled and found myself in the saddle and under a fully functional main at 2500... I got my A-licence at 91 jumps and finished my RW-instruction course at 170-ish. I didn't 'fail' many jumps though, I was busy having fun. Sure, I had to repeat stuff, some of it many times - but I don't regard those jumps as money down the drain - there was always something I did right or could learn from and at the very least the freefall time is counting for my B-licence. In my opinion, the only jump I "failed" was my attempt at my first 8-way. I was way too nervous since I was not completely ready and wanted to succeed way too much, as. this would be the last chance at an eight way for a while (I'm from a Cessna 206 DZ - six jumpers tops). Shortly summarising the jump, I nearly torpedoed the formation and ended up stopping below the formation, and without realising that for a couple of seconds. Remember you are (should be) skydiving to have fun, not to measure yourself against the "pro's". An A-licence, passing a level or standing up your landings are not the "holy grail" of skydiving - walking away from your landing so you can try again is.
