Ok guys, Fess up! how Stupid have you ever been to get.....
Baksteen replied to galvar2439's topic in The Bonfire
"Hey, did it hurt when you fell from heaven, or did you flare in time?" - as it turns out to the only non-skydiver in the room. "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom -
Granted - The Hospital-Barbie doll is all yours. I wish my boss fell into a piranha infested river. (I really like her, especially after the meeting I just had ) "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

It happens to be true though - I'm not afraid of needles. I used to donate small quantities of blood (up to 100 ml) to my collegue's white blood cell research several times a month, having been blessed by Nature with a high PMN and macrophage count and being stupid enough to have let said collegue find out. But the doctor at the blood bank explained to me that they'd take such a large quantity of my blood that the medication levels in my plasma could drop below the effective dose. It would be no problem for the blood they'd take from me, however, as the meds would be filtered out during processing. However, he went on to say that if wanted one, I was welcome to the cup of tea that every donor is allowed afterwards.

Grated - however, you're completely stuck in the mother of traffic jams for the next 24 hours. I wish I was a better cook "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

(Please insert the usual not-an-instructor yadda yadda sotry here.) Several of the students at our small Cessna DZ were actually trained during a boogie week on a different DZ, where they were flying three Caravans and a Porter. Mind you, they were trained by our instructors on our gear and while having the comfort of a huge landing area available in the 'unpopular' zone of the airfield - meaning far away from the spectators and taking a long walk back. Our other low time students (including me) were encouraged to jump, but we were only allowed in the air when supervised by a jumpmaster from our home DZ and had to turn to our own instructors for briefings and debriefings. Not that our instructors do not trust those of the hosting DZ, it is just that our own instructors know us and our problems, hangups and 'talents' (for want of a better word). So boogie jumping for lowtimers IS possible, in the right circumstances. But first decide if you really want to do it at this time, then talk to your instructors to see if it's actually possible and if not what you should work on.

How extreme a skydiver are you
Baksteen replied to crashtested's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Not more so than three quarters of the rest of the replies in this thread "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom -
Yes I didn't think that through didn't I? It wouldn't matter if I disconnected it, since the cutaway either was ineffective, or not performed for some reason (closed container/RSL disconnected in the first place). You're trying to release the reserve manually in any case, so it doesn't matter what the 'riser end' (don't know the name) of the RSL does - as long as you hold it tight. Else you might have another floating bit you can't quite reach. Still, like I said, I'll stick with tracing my reserve handle. I'm on meds - they won't have me. Besides, the new DUtch slogan to get more people t donate is: "You give blood with your heart" Thanks, but I'd prefer my left arm if it's all the same to you "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

I had a huuuuge argument with my mother earlier today.
Baksteen replied to Muenkel's topic in The Bonfire
Mom, dad, my brother and I bicker amongst ourselves quite a lot. But when its necessary, we're there for each other. I count myself very fortunate with the family I got. Mom, Dad - you rock! That is all. -
Oh, I wasn't necessarily ripping on him personally - I don't even know the guy. Like I said, it's true for all disciplines. Your own post says it nicely: It's this kind of 'most people' I was talking about. "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

Granted - you now know all about pyrimidines, purines, open reading frames, stop codons, TATA boxes, that Adenine couples with a double bond to thymidine and guanine couples with a triple bond to cytosine, transcription and translation. Isn't this exciting!? No need to corrupt this - it's horrible enough when it goes right. I wish you hadn't reminded me. EDIT: I seem to have granted your previous wish as well.. Too slow - ach weell.. Granted, Kbordson - YOU are corrupted instead I wish the damn equipment I have to work with wouldn't break bloody down all the frickin' time! What else is new? I'm typing this using a spoon clenched between my teeth. As for the beer, that's why God invented straws "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

Funny you should mention that.. Perhaps people in all disciplines should complain less, jump more and not wait until someone else does all the hard work and hands over everything on a silver platter. Wanna do complex more ways? Organise coaching, and advertise the event so people at other DZs know about it. "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

granted. During the entire holidays the weather is ideal for jumping but you cannot get away to any DZ. Then, upon returning home you find that as soon as you get to any DZ a thunderstorm will start. This amazing meteorological phenomenon will continue for the rest of your life (though with the correct spelling) and all skydivers will know it's your fault if they cannot jump. I wish that wishes were fishes "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

So basically you are just a complete bowling whuffo. Seriously, if skydivers are not trying to dispel the ignorance about our sport, who'll do it for us? Hollywood? The Mass Media? Basically, I try not to *keep* gushing to my friends, family and acq.. aquia.. er, people I vaguely know about skydiving but if they ask questions I try my best to answer them - in language they can understand and with examples they can understand. Does this mean we should not laugh about 'silly whuffo' questions? Of course not. But the least you can do is explain to them just why you find the question funny. Rant over, flame away.

Could someone explain about the tapewells please? A pre 3-ring were they? What did you need to do to cut away? With your rig closed they are on your chest, but once the container is open and you have something above you they lift up to above your shoulders or something? Perhaps you should try to start over? "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom -
Granted - your right had changes into one. Being evil, it is immensely strong and has a life all of it's own. So you have to keep watching it continuously in case it tries to kill you - again. I wish there would be no more soap operas or reality TV shows, both on this side of the grave and the next one, EVER. None of those options are right for me. Coaching, sure. Push it, no. I only try something new if I feel that I'm ready for it and if the coach/instructor agrees. This doesn't mean that I only pull above 5, but that if I want to do something new I work towards it. If that makes me a wuss, so be it. -
Too easy man - Granted. It's burning your bed instead. I wish I was a skygod "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

Sorry dude - got called away and accidentally pressed post

Granted - Blue skies, a nice breeze, excellent temperature and well-behaved uppers. Unfortunately your repack expired yesterday and there is no rigger available "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

I'd be afraid the student (me) would accident'ly disconnect it. I'll stick with tracing the reserve ripcord from the housing. But I'd like something clarified: with "dislodged" do you mean it's actually flying loose, or just 'in a different position than usual' but still on the velcro?
