  1. Yes, well - Mythbusters is a nice show, but remains a show. Walking up to a skydiver and asking them three questions lacks a certain je ne sais pas, doesn't it. At least the crew has to be seen 'taking one for the team', destroying stuff (by throwing that dummy out of the aircraft) and buidling stuff to test something. Hence grant builing that small windtunnel before getting to the real one. I mean, they probably knew full well that standup vs flat was going to get them differences, but at least a model of a windtunnel is something they can build "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  2. 4000 - break off and track / stop playing with your frontrisers and doing other radical canopy exercises. 3000 open 1500 Silver! NOW! "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

  5. I personally refuse to go to the cafeteria because even with all the hubbub I can still hear several of my collegues slurp and gobble through their lunch even if they sit several chairs down the table. At least in my cubicle I don't have to deal with bad table manners. And of course, I get to eat with the cute girls "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  6. I'm not a very experienced jumper myself, but this I can answer
  7. I like what i was taught: (top of my head) Below 1000: ride the plane down above 1000 ft: prepare for exit with little separation.(I was static line) When you graduate to freefall it becomes: below 2k activate reserve, above activate main. The "advanced" scenarios are gradually introduced during the periodic harness tests, to make you think. But I must confess, an aircraft emergency was the last thing on my mind when i was going up for my first jump.
  8. deary me... choking on your tea may very well be the last thing you ever do "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  9. I'm still confused. You're saying that some DZs teach students to pull 2 handles in an emergency exit? Am I reading that correctly? Which 2 handles? What possible benefit would there ever be to pulling 2 handles no matter which 2 they were? The benefit is that you teach one and one only procedure and drill it in good. It does follow the KISS principle. And yes, according to the poll results at least three people out there teach a full two handle procedure during an emergency bail out. Not an instructor, but I was wondering: You are in a 182 at 1000 ft with your last student and the engine's on fire. Would you still like them to execute full EPs / ride the plane down? 11. well, allowed.. I mean, it's your money. But for ten packjobs you can make several jumps, yes? And what if you go to a small DZ and noone is going to pack for you cause everyone is too busy jumping? 12. A PCIT is caused by the pilot chute being unable to extract the pin. my guess is that once the d-bag is off you back your canopy will open, as the d-bag will generate drag too. EDIT: A pilot chute hesitation is usually easily cleared when you look over your shoulder at the opening count of "1-1000, 2-1000, 3-1000... WTF-1000??" when you feel no opening shock. A baglock is a wholly different kind of nasty malfunction in which the canopy is unable to clear the d-bag. Sometimes your packjob will not be as neat as other times, which means you end up with a thick d-bag which in turn means a lot of cussing and the necessity for quite a bit of violence in closing the container (starting over is obviously not an option). Lengthening the loop is not always the answer though, because too long a closing loop has its own dangers. 13. ..note the smile, which normally has a triangular fin on its back and is usually seen approaching the little kiddies swimming area after having crossed the reef at high tide. 16. Ah well - 49 is a beautiful age. I'll have to make sure that i spend my last hard earned cent on April 13 2029 as it won't do me much good on april 14. And if the little basterd turns out to be wrong I'll simply sue him for all he's worth. 20. It all depends on how much I jumped in the weekend before. More jumps means that it is less likely that I'm Garfielding around. "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

  23. Nice! There is a lot of satisfaction in working with kids. Seeing the quiet one completely open up on the third day of summer camp - that's what it's all about.
