  1. A feather in your cap? Put that feather where the sun don't shine! "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

The one on the student rig I was using "misfired" at 1500 feet while the unit was set at 1000 feet...a fraction of a second second after I pulled the silver after a closed container mal. If that's a misfire, I'll take it. No AAD and three more seconds and I'd have impacted at linestretch. 9. Hi Chris, I too often tell people to talk to their instructors or point at my low jump numbers. After I do, I tell them what worked for me in a scenario not unlike the one they were describing, at my jump#s, canopy and WL, the weather etc etc etc at that time. It's meant as a way to ensure that people do not blindly follow the stuff I'm saying, because what worked for me might be not the best solution for another person. Take your 1.3 WL for example. If you were to tell me that was a great WL at (say) 75 jumps you might be completely right. Yet, if I would blindly follow that advice I would be in violation of Dutch regulations.
  10. Well, actually my 'weekend' was Friday and Saturday. :12:2 Friday was midsummernight at my DZ, where we jump from sunrise till sunset (nine am to half past ten pm). We had a Caravan there for the evening; it was great to have twelve skydivers in the air at the same time. Usually we fly a 206 turbine, but even our pilot Jaap cannot fly that fast. Saturday was all you can jump for 99 euros at Teuge, so I decided to check that out too. In addition, I finally bought a rig, though I'm not quite decided on the main yet. Beers owned: -first jump out of a caravan (at my home DZ) -bought my first rig "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

  14. I'm getting this banner a lot lately. The timer counts down. Following the link (I was bored) leads to an ad site which offers the car again and which asks for your first and last name and email, with the express concession that your personal info will be used for commercial purposes. After that they'll promise you "a gift" so in order to be able to deliver it they'll ask your address, date of birth and value of your mortgage. Then i was fed up with making up false info so i didn't check it out any further. Would people actually fall for this shit? Would people "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom
  15. Great post, just wanted to add my opinion on this exact detail: Upsizing is never "scary or bad", despite what the common attitude is - in fact, I got a lot more response, performance and pleasure out of a navigator 240 compared to a Falcon 215. ----- As to the old, tired, milked out "7 vs 9 cell" debate, if you're happy with a 7-cell, buy a 7 cell. Like the 9 cell better, go for it. When I started to jump a 7 cell, an experienced jumper told me huffily that "in that case I must like having to work hard in order to make it back from a long spot." I dunno - but I think I'll cover more distance under a Spectre 190 than he will under his itty bitty handkerchief. 16. Well, if I'd decide to land a canopy which isn't perfectly open for whatever reason, I'd probably stick with gentle corrections no matter what the canopy size. Don't forget to try to flare the canopy during your controllability check though.. 17. Glenmorangie is very nice.. But I usually have to content myself with cheap stuff, of which Glenn Talloch is my definite favourite. "That formation-stuff in freefall is just fun and games but with an open parachute it's starting to sound like, you know, an extreme sport." ~mom

  20. Though I bow to your superior knowledge, I respectfully invite you to check out this link and see if your socio-economic history and cultural vantage point might be a bit on the narrow side... recognising limitations is one thing, saying someone isn't fit for skydiving quite another. 21. That's kinda what I'm saying, isn't it
  22. In the short time I've been in the sport (a year and a half) I have been unfortunate enough to have been around three incidents - each on a different dropzone. During the first I was thankfully on final and didn't see the guy pound in after a low turn. I can still see him lying in the grass of his little field, lines wrapped around him. The second, I was in the bar of the DZ I was visiting. As people outside started to make concerned noises I shut my eyes tightly - but I still heard the sound. The third I actually saw coming in on final, braking his leg on landing. I can still hear the sound his leg made when it snapped...I shudder when I remember it.. Twardo, I hope you are right... However, I didn't rush in to help with the latter two incidents, as more competent people had already done so. In the first one, there was only a small group of skydivers on the scene and even then I limited myself to something I could make myself useful with - first I gathered everyone's gear and put it back into the van, second I busied myself keeping the gawkers away. That's what pisses me off the most; those bovine people who will gather around any accident gazing vacantly and with their drooling mouths open at someone elses suffering - in some cases even hindring the emergency services when they try to reach the goddamn victim! 23. Er.. yeah - and also the skills to easily evade any unexpected manouevres a student may make. Like some dumbass who spins out of control on exit for instance.
