  1. I am having problems with the images showing up as in the attached photo. Sometimes it will be fine and then it will show pages like this one sporatically, sometimes several in a row. Occasionally there will be a larger margin where the images are at as well. I have all the latest updates and have restarted IE as well as rebooted. I have not noticed this problem when viewing any other web pages and it only seems to happen with the little icons beside the post. I don't recall it happening on forum views but I may be wrong.
  2. Mine didn't come with a ring but I purchased it back in late August.
  3. Just curious, does anyone actually run their editing software off the external drive? What would be the benefits or downsides of doing this (except for using some space for the actual software). It is a 260Gb drive and I was thinking about partitioning it allowing space for stills, downloaded video clips, and the software. The majority of the remaining space in its own partition would be dedicated to DV captured for editing. Thanks for any ideas.
  4. FWIW the Maxtor external drives use the Oxford 911 chipset. I am pretty sure the chipset is capable of handling up to 260GB Maxtor drives. http://maxtor.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/maxtor.cfg/php/enduser/olh_adp.php?p_faqid=991
  5. If your talking all around container as in Freefly, bellyfly, freestyle, etc. than it would have to be a container that is freefly friendly. Freefly friendly is just fine for bellyfly but it may not work the other way around. Some rigs may be easy to pack reserves in but don't offer alot of bridle or pin protection. Some might keep you pretty "busy" during a reserve repack and offer great pin and bridle protection. This all may be obvious to some but just trying to demonstrate some factors.
  6. Not responding to anyone in particular and maybe I am missing somthing here but... OK, the girl would have died without the operation. Now did anyone tell the mother that her daughter would live if she had the operation? The way I see it if I was told myself, or a loved one, need a transplant of this magnitude or any major surgery for that matter, that there are risks invloved. Death happens to be one of those risks. I really don't think that there are many surgerys that are "routine".
  7. Don't let the fatality rates for various activities fool you. Example that I hear alot..."more people die on the roads every year than skydivers jumping form planes". Well yeah, there are more people driving than skydiving. Same goes with alot of other sports, there is simply more people doing them which explains why more people die doing them. Remember that you will also be flying in an aircraft, which also adds a certain amount of risk. Sorry, getting a bit off topic here. I am sure whatever you want to photograph will still be there when you gain enough expierence to be able to safely take that camera up
  8. I have heard the high horizontal stabs. and low wings that can make recovery a little more difficult in some circumstances (not just speaking of Otters.) It might be interseting to know if there are any associated problems have both a high wing and high horiz. stab.
  9. Really sorry if this was already posted but just got off work and noticed this in the WFFC message board.
  10. Been there, done that....see http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?do=post_view_flat;post=388477;page=1;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;mh=50;
  11. A CASA will burn right around 50 gallons of fuel per load but it uses Garrett turboprops.
  12. What OS are you using? Have you tried connecting another firewire device to see if it works? Both my camera and PC's firewire ports are 4 pin and I have no problems. You might try looking for a looking for an updated 1394 driver. You can also try reinstalling the driver. Delete the driver. In Windows go to device manager, expand the 1394 section and right click on the controller and select uninstall. Now reboot and the system should re-detect your port and install the driver. There are others that frequent this forum that may be able to give better advice, but reinstalling the device driver has worked for me in the past when I had problems with hardware that quit functioning.
  13. The link below is what we use at work (the orangish ones). They work well and are comforable as long as you insert them all the way. They are not the foam type that you have to roll up first, those drive me crazy! Certain ear plugs can give some people headaches (including myself), but I don't think it is real common. Like I said these are comfortable and do a good job of attenuating a broad amount of the spectrum. At work we are subjected to low and high frequencys in the range of 130 decibels. Just a comparison, a normal conversation is around 60 decibles. 130dB is around 60 times louder than this and very uncomfortable if no hearing protection is used. Anyhow, this is all probibally TMI. http://www.howardleight.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/HLSite.woa/wa/product?key=quiet
  14. I havent read the thread in incidents yet but here is a graph to give a general idea of acceleration vs. time. Hunted through the logbook and JumpTrack and came up with the following dive. I do not keep really detailed descriptions of jumps anymore so some of this is just a guess as to the dive. This was listed as a head down dive...mind you I wouldn't really say I have any real head down skills at the moment and the dive was pretty much getting out, pointing the head to the Earth, get legs spread and arms out a little and trying to feel the relative wind equally on my front and back. From the looks of the graph I exited on my belly and made the transition at about 10.5 seconds in [128MPH] (change of red line about that time). Accelerated, [202MPH@18.5 sec.] did somthing after maxing out to slow a little (hang the arms or legs out a little more?) and peeled out slowly into a track onto the belly to slow before opening. You can take it for what it is worth and the numbers may be skewed around a little bit but it still gives a visual representation.
  15. For what it's worth, I have also heard that changing tape brands can cause the heads to get dirty and start acting up. The sources that I have come across says that Sony tapes will not leave build up as quickly as other brands, somthing about the coatings they use. In reference to one of the other posts, not that most could not figure out this out, but DON'T use the pencil eraser on the tape heads themselves.
  16. I have a post in talkback Here about firewire drives if anyone can help. Thanks
  17. Another question, when using an external firewire drive where, if any, are the "bottlenecks?" I don't want to spend alot on a fast drive and stuff only to have it's performance reduced cause of some other factors. Thanks for all the info so far!
  18. Heh, well it dumped 6-8 inches where I live here in Ohio. Winds are around 15 to 25mph and they are forecasting around 3 inches this evening/tonight plus 1 to 2 inches are possible Sunday from what I understand, plus blowing and drifting. Anyhow it is on it's way
  19. Thanks for the info. I have a Vaio and the existing disk is an ATA-5 and I am using DMA mode 5. I am gonna check out the firewire box solution with an external drive. I was just trying to keep things kinda simple, and an internal drive would be less hassle as far as transport.
  20. We have found that for video editing it would not be worth the switch to USB 2.0 if you don't already have the capability. The DV coming from cameras/computers is easily carried by 1394 and the new USB will not speed the transfer up. I did have the numbers for what the digital bandwith is but...?
  21. I decided to post a computer question since well I'm not sure, its late and I have been up too long to think straight. Anyhow, does anyknow if they make laptop hard drives 2.5" that run 7200RPM and have a ATA-5 enhanced IDE interface? I checked Hitachi (what i have now) and they only go up to 5400RPM and IBM is part of them now so they have nothing better to offer. The reason I am looking at 7200RPM is video editing. I would like to find at least a 40GB capacity cause I have a 20 now and only have 5GB free The thought of a firewire HD crossed my mind but it seems I can get an internal for a bit less $ and it should do the trick? THanks for any insight [yawn]
  22. Well, my ProTrack has been just fine and I have put about 250 jumps on the helmet. The pocket is sturdy and still works like new. Never heard of anyone else losing their audible out of their pocket either. As for features, well it is a helmet, what more is there to say?
  23. There were no "penis-shaped" "pimp daddy" helmets made available. BUT, the models before the "pimp daddy" had internal audible pockets and were cool looking IIRC. I need a new helmet to replace my pimp daddy I made into a camera helmet and want to see the new Mindwarps!!!
  24. Does it have the ability to download data like the pro-track? Between their web page info and their .pdf brochure neither lists computer interface or software for your computer
  25. What type of insurance...car, life, gear, medical etc.??
