Saturday, April 14, 2007 SkyDive Houston is hosting Four Way Scrambles! We will take different skill level jumpers and mix them to a 4way team. You will jump with that team all day for five jumps and be judged as a whole. Four jumps rookie style, with the fifth jump to be a timed 4way speed star with bonus points. Each team will consist of a team captain, intermediate, beginner and a NEWBIE. At this time we have enough interested for six teams. We will have a meeting at 7:45am on April 14 where we will break into teams and have a short briefing from our S&TA Henry Butler. Pack a lunch and be prepared to have some fun! Prizes will be awarded to top teams. And for after the jumping... A donated benefit dinner will also catered in with two kegs of beverages. All proceeds going to the Nelson Suarez family in his time of need. Please direct your questions to Todd Bell at tbellemtp(at)yahoo.com.

0:6:1 It was a bit gusty on saturday afternoon, so my jumping got a little slow... but I got in 6 jumps between 2 dropzones this weekend. for my first time jumping at spaceland.
-
with me it's very dependant on the situation. If the winds are goofy, and it's load 1... i'll let it go up and watch them land. If the landings go well, i'll probably go up. I've jumped once in 10mph gusting to 26mph... not only did I land off, but my canopy also folded in half at about 30 feet and luckily managed to re-open before i hit the ground. The drinking started EARLY that day. Alot of it depends not only on the wind speed, but also the direction it's coming from and the turbulence. At my DZ, it can be blowing like crazy and gusting a bit from the southeast, and i'm perfectly ok with that.. but if it's blowing out of the west, i'll hardly jump in even a constant 15mph wind, the air is just too turbulent and unpredictable.

0:4:a little highlights were the attempted 13-way dive, and my first CReW jump, a 3-way stack

It hasn't been too big of a headache for me. Our software simply runs off the system time, so if the system time is good, then our software is up to snuff. I have not even started updating any of my stuff though... I'll probably just disable the automatic DSL updates and do it myself.

I also would like a good clear yes or no answer. Because as it is right now, my rigger won't repack my rig... and the rsl guide rings and velcro are long gone.
-
that was what my rigger had said following PIA. He informed me and a couple of others who jump Javelins without RSL's that it didn't have to be hooked up, but had to be there for the repack. I'm not sure if I'll get rid of my Javelin, or keep it for a second rig... but it has definitely pushed my timetable up for ordering a new and better fitting rig from another mfgr when I've got the cash to spare.

I have a Tempo 120 reserve and a Cobalt 135 main in my NJ... it is doable, but a big pain in the ass to pack. I'd really try to keep the canopy size at 120 or under. FWIW. It is a pain to close, my rig is hard as a rock and looks pregnant, and my closing loop is about 8 inches long.

I had the exact same experience when I ordered my Cookie. Very easy and FAST transaction.

150 Stiletto ok for beginner?
kris2extreme replied to funkcanna's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
No, they currently do not... and I personally hope they don't ever. I'm a firm believer in self regulation, and a very big opponent of standardization based on jump numbers rather than individual ability. People should be educated enough to understand why/why not they should be jumping a particular canopy type or size, and those who just don't get the education, can't comprehend it, or just flat out don't care about it, should be regulated by their peers. While I do not like to see anyone get hurt, this sport has a way of weeding out the people who really don't have the physical, mental, or common sense abilities for it. -
I find that the very basic wingloading calculation should be briefly discussed in the FJC. Exit weight / canopy size = wingloading, and their wingloading should be at/around .8:1. At that point they don't need to know the mechanics behind a .8:1 wingloading versus a 1.2:1 wingloading... they only need to know that they should be at/around .8:1. That is just part of the basic gear understanding that they should be learning about from the beginning.

the first S in the 3 S's is SQUARE. It is unfortunate to see someone get hurt, but learn from his mistakes and follow your procedures each and every time. Make it a second nature to be able to look up and see in an instant whether the canopy is good. If it isn't, then get rid of it and get under your reserve.
-
you see, the problem he had was not at 1k... it was at 5k. He screwed around for FOUR THOUSAND feet before finally becoming aware enough to realize he had a problem... one he should have dealt with thousands of feet prior. This is why you look at your canopy, and pay attention to its shape and the tension/position of the lines before your decision altitude.

help- jump ideas to video with rental gear
kris2extreme replied to countzero's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
a hybrid is probably about as extreme as your going to be able to go on the student gear... Maybe get some good shots of you exiting the plane, do a good clean hop & pop and have someone video it from exit to open... get some shots of you deploying, sniveling, and then opening under canopy. definately get some good landing footage. Maybe get a video of forming a 4-way round. Just have some fun like normal... he's going to be impressed no matter what. -
When's the Last Time You Went to a Drive-in Movie?
kris2extreme replied to NWFlyer's topic in The Bonfire
a few months ago. Opening night was Ice Age 2 A friend of mine's family recently opened a single screen drive-in about 3 miles from my house. (Northwest Houston, TX area) They're in the process of putting up a second screen. -
Totally agreed. Downwind and crosswind landings are excellent skills to practice in semi-controlled conditions before having to do them off-DZ, in someones back yard, between the porch and the swingset. I started my weekend off this past weekend with a downwinder due to extra drift from the uppers. I try to sneak one in every now and then when traffic and wind conditions permit... usually on hop & pops where there's nobody to try and follow me in.

no The bag itself isn't whats causing the drag to stand the jumper up, it is the pilot chute. The pilot chute will not collapse until after the canopy is out of the bag. Since the pilot chute has enough drag to pull the main pin out, and the reserve pin is generally easier to pull out than the main, I would have to assume that it would pull the reserve pin. If the RSL didn't extract the pin, as soon as you pull the reserve ripcord, the RSL ring will be free to go on its way with the rest of the main canopy assembly, just the same as if the RSL had done the pulling.

0:5:bunches Lots of fun belly stuff this weekend. And got my SCR finally. -
a sabre 135 and a pd126r will be VERY VERY tight... FWIW. I pack a cobalt 135 in a NJ with a Tempo 120 reserve... it's pretty damn tight with a long ass closing loop, and both of those canopies have a lower pack volume than the canopies you are looking to put into yours.

When I cleared my baglock, it didn't open any harder than any other terminal deployment. I did have a shit-ton of line twists though... good thing I was still at 6k when the baglock cleared.
-
that's very possible. I've cleared a bag lock malfunction by yanking down on the risers. Given the available altitude in the same situation, I would try to clear it again. Two tries and then it's chopped. Excellent video of reasons why you should get pin checks and protect your pin in the plane.

Aggieland will fly with 4... I'd thought about making it that way today... but I was waiting on a phone call so I didn't get the chance to head out. They'll definately be out there tomorrow weather permitting... i've got a meeting in the galleria area at 11, but I'll probably make my way out there afterwards.

i know EXACTLY how you feel! I'm dying here looking out the window at the big blue clear sky with no place to jump at!@#$

Currently... Personal Banker: I hate my job immensely and dread going to it every day i'm scheduled. I have a BBA in Banking w/Finance Minor, and after trying out the job field, realized it wasn't for me. I did IT work for years and liked it, just decided to go to school full time when the job market tanked. Now i'm going back into IT and have an interview with a company this week.
