  1. One point that nobody seems to have made... The Navigator is intended as a canopy for student operations. It makes a great first jump canopy, and is ideal for student use. I've never seen anyone buy one for personal use. If your father is looking at buying gear, there are better alternatives. If you're looking at PD, look at big Sabre 2's and Specter. Also the Aerodyne Triathlon, Icarus Omega and Safire, and the Pisa Hornet would also are good canopies for lower experience levels. Your father would do well to do his first few initial jumps on very large student gear, then downsize to something with a 1.0 wingloading. His first few jumps should be on HUGE canopies, at a .8 wingloading or less. Once he's built up his confidence under the huge student canopies, then he should start to think about buying something at a 1.0 wingloading. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  2. I would never even attempt to do something as intensive as video editing on ME... The OS just isn't that reliable. People seem to have the best luck running Windows 2000 or XP Profesional. If your hardware can support these, and you can snag a copy somewhere, I'd strongly recomend this. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  3. That is entirely possible, and not all that unlikely. Current applications are built layer up on layer, starting with a very low level functions, and getting to more user specific functions at a higher level. The lower levels are frequently called "architectures", and entire application suites will frequently share architectures. Not only that, but when writing for multiple operating systems, it's very common to simply write one piece of code, and have different compilers make the different OS specific calls. Levels of abstraction are built into the development tools, so that programmers don't call OS specific functions, they call the abstractions, and the compiler interperts the abstractions to hook into whatever features that OS provides. It might not even be a bug in the application per se, but a bug in the build process that results in inneficient code on one specific platform. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  5. That would seem to make a lot of sense, wouldn't it? Probably not taking ownership because that involves increased liabilities. Simply running it so he can syphon the money he's owed out of the profit. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  9. Also: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.aspx?displaylang=en is a good place for pretty much any of the free Microsoft products. If you use Internet Explorer, then you can also just go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  10. A wing pointed at the ground does not generate vertical lift. Yes, larger wings have more drag, but vertical lift is the primary "decelerator" in a modern canopy. Larger wings will obviously drop slower because of the higher drag, but the difference is negligible. Point a wing at the ground, and it will fall. Fast. 747, 182, or Pitts: it won't be pretty. Not trying to chew your ass, just pointing out that a bigger canopy would not necesarily have changed the outcome by a considerable margin. It would have decreased the odds of you being in the situation in the first place, though. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.

  12. This was exactly the type of system I'd been thinking of setting up. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  13. I read the same thing, specifically assests roughly twice his total liabilities including plane leases and bank dept. I also read 3 profitable years so far, including 2003 YTD. The cause of his problems seem to be a bit of a tax problem. He doesn't seem to like paying them. Of course I'm neither an accountant nor attorney, so draw your own conclusions. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  14. Careful yourself, there. I haven't seen anything about Fayard Enterprises being investigated by the SEC... and I'd be very surprised if I did see it, because I don't think Fayard Enterprises is publicly traded. The SEC doesn't give a rats ass if it isn't publicly traded. Secondly, the only thing I've seen about the IRS is that they're listed as creditors on the bankrupcy court website. Newsflash: Everyone pays taxes. Everyone is a creditor to the IRS. Every company, wether profitable or ass deep in losses, lists the IRS as a creditor. If you go to the website of the bankrupcy court diverdriver posted, click the link that says "claims". There's 3 entries, totalling less then $3,000. None are significant otter parts suppliers, only 1 is avaiation related at all, and it's an electronics company. "All these problems togeather"... yada yada yada. He's got 3 problems, and they total less then $3,000. The fact that he did file willingly for chapter 11 is significant, but it's hardly the doom and gloom a lot of people are making it out to be. He'd be in the clear if any of the DZ's that owe him bags of cash would pay up. Anyone wanna guess who's at the top of the list? _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  15. Are you current on Microsoft XP patches? Run Windows Update a few times until it runs clear. I have no issues running under XP. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  16. Luna, I don't intend to be mean... but I can't imagine anyone being let off student status who can't keep a heading. The thought scares me, and if I were running the show I'd be looking into why they let you graduate if you can't fall stable. I hope that the DZ's I jump at would not be so generous. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  17. The other thing to think about is that with the depressed economy, fewer jumpers are coming into the sport right now, while more people are getting out. There's a surplus of good used gear on the market right now. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  18. Yup, likewise I have it running on two xp pro, and 3 win2k pro servers. Unfortunately all but one my processors running it are crappy.... My laptop is doing more work units then the 3 servers combined. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  19. Chris, the story that i've gotten is that it was to cover some relatively small problems that occured in the off-season. He filed wilingly to put off some payments on electronics until the season kicked in. This sounds like a text-book example of how chapter 11 is supposed to work. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  20. No, but if I had been under something not as heavily loaded and not a high performance canopy, then I probably wouldn't have been in that situation to begin with AND I wouldn't have burned through as much altitude as I did fixing it. I once had my Triathlon loaded at 1.2 spin up. Any canopy can spin up and put you on your back. Yes, it was diving incredibly quickly too. My pro-track didn't notice any change in freefall speed. You could have just as easily been in that situation under my old Triathlon had you wasted too much time trying to fix it. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  21. How'd it feel to have that horseshoe pulled out of your ass? Congrats dude.... Shoulda bought a lottery ticket on the way home. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  22. I have never paid for normal everyday L/O. This includes jumps at The Ranch, Aerhio, Skydive Chicago, Chicagoland, Perris, Eloy, Lodi, Aerohio... and others. If it was something special - a case where a L/O was brought in for you specifically, or it was coaching, then I could understand it. Not for general everyday stuff, though. Most LO's do get paid, either in cash or jump credit... but that's the DZ's job to pay them. Not yours. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  23. If the largest jump plane owner/operator in the country is going bankrupt, this is something we should know about - just like we know about United, we should know about Fayard. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
  24. Well, so did the Americans. The US was sending biological sampes up to 92, and the UN sactions went in place in 91. If it's the case that Russia has been sending stuff recently, then I'd agree. I'd like to see evidence of that first, though. _Am __ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
