This isn't spyware. It's a Windows feature, and it's quite useful on a properly firewalled network. Unfortunately, it comes enabled on home PCs (where it's mostly useless) and spammers figured it out.
-
Windows has a feature that lets users/apps send popup messages to each other. Anyone can do it, just open up a DOS prompt and type "net send computer_name_or_address message". The ability to receieve messages can be turned off in Windows' settings, but it is left on by default. Spammers are using automated tools to exploit this.

They used to have this thing in Morton, IL and I got to see it once. The Aladium Q38 Pumpkin Modulator was freakin' incredible. This was back in the day when a mile was top of the line.

Buy more tickets Unless there is a flaw in the rules or the machines that draw the numbers, that is the only way to increase your odds.

Since they are seperate rounds, the events are statistically identical. If you always stick with door number 1, you will always have a 33% chance of winning (assuming, as always, that the prizes are distributed at random). If you always change your mind after Monty shows you one of the boobie prizes, you will always have a 66% chance of winning. This game, and the lottery, and are called independent events in statistics terminology. That means that one trial (time playing the game, lottery drawing, whatever) doesn't affect further trials.

I still insist that I'm right. But anyway... Statistics is a freaky (and difficult) science. I sure didn't realize how hard it was until I took a college level stats class. Take, for example, Let's Make a Deal. You know the game: You have three doors. One car. Two boobie (hehe) prizes. You pick one. Monty Hall opens one of the other doors to reveal a boobie prize. You have the option to let it ride or change your mind. What do you do? As weird as it sounds, you are at a statistical disadvantage if you stay with the same door, and at a distinct advantage if you change your mind to the one remaining closed door. Ask Google about the Monty Hall Problem for more mindbending info about this.

1 in 1000. Seriously. Each draw is independant, since the pool of possible outcomes does not change between lotteries. By your logic, if I flip a coin and get heads, the next time I flip the coin I must get tails. This is obviously false. Take it from the kid with the discrete mathematics textbook on his shelf, your odds are the same whether you always use the same number or always use a different number, assuming that the pool of numbers to be drawn from isn't modified. If, on the other hand, a number is removed from the pool once it is drawn, then your hypothesis would be correct.

Be careful when you make promises... You're way more likely to win $50 than a million.

Plans: Study for a math test. Avoid the Halloween drunks. I watched my physics lab TA get stabbed to death by a ghost, so I've got that going for me.

Nah... It just means that the recipient hasn't emptied their mailbox in a while. Happens all to time to my users ("What do you mean I can't just leave 100 meg attachments in my online folders?").

Less than 50 degrees in the lake by the airport : 5 : 1 A student chopped a baglock over the lake at the north end up the dropzone. The main deployment bag and canopy splashed down right in the center of the lake. I was up to my knees in freezing water and mud the whole way out and back to retrieve the thing. Never did find the freebag. Two solo sit attempts. I'm fine 'til I hit terminal, then it's spin spin spin. Hop 'n pop. 7-way. 8-way. Very fun, but nothing especially stands out. Beer for my new (first) jumpsuit.

Nope. Me First only does punk covers of non-punk stuff. AllMusic has a good biography, but their shitty design won't let me link to it. Just put "me first and the gimme gimmes" in the search box.

Dixie Dregs. Steve Morse can out-shred a, uh, shredding thingy that's really good at shredding.

Hey, I never said I was opposed to guns. I have an expired FOID card, a couple of merit badges, and an empty space in a closet where a bunch of guns that I never used sat. I grew up very near a high crime area, and I certainly don't think it would have been higher if Illinois' fairly loose gun laws were relaxed.

No. The second amendment is being radically misintrepreted by many, if not most, Americans. The framers' intent is quite clear: The second amendment was designed to keep citizens armed to defend against acts of aggression from other countries. Not to shoot burglars. I'm not saying that all guns should be banned. I'm not saying that most guns should be banned. I'm not even saying that any guns should be banned. I'm just saying that misinterpreting the second amendment is at best a weak argument for keeping guns legal.

This is a pretty common scam. Buyers tend to lowball on reserve auctions to avoid getting burned, which means less cash for the buyer. So instead of risking not making enough money to break even on an item, or not selling it at all, they will set no reserve then refuse to sell (or demand more from the winner) if they aren't happy with the high bid.

The cops just need a good plan. 1) "Dirty" Harry Callahan 2) See attached.

I quote Chris (diverdriver): "There is nothing in this report that would indicate that being a Private Pilot had anything to do with causing this accident." I think DD was pointing out that a private pilot was flying for a commercial operation in clear violation of the FARs. By doing that he was risking not only his own ratings, but the business that he was flying the aircraft for.

I have no idea who could have put it there...

I don't think that they know the make of the weapon. The only detailed witness statement that they've gotten turned out to be an outright lie.

I believe that Sunrise offers this option. My home dropzone's Wings student rigs have an SOS handle as well as a cutaway handle. A member of my college's skydiving club was quite possibly saved by this a few weeks ago when he had a lineover malfunction. He peeled the cutaway handle and pulled, but not enough to release either riser. He then pulled the silver handle, which in this case completed the cutaway and released his reserve. With a standard cutaway system he could very well have had a fatal two canopy out situation. IIRC, the rigs have two yellow cables coming from the reserve handle, as well as the reserve ripcord. I don't recall exactly how the system works, but a double ended loop sounds possible. After another student cutaway this weekend (PC over the nose fouled the slider), the DZO was wandering around looking for more loops. I'm sure if someone PM'ed HeatherB she would pop in and explain it...

An interesting aside for the geeks... the guy that owns the dna lounge, jwz, is a minor god in Unix programming circles. He's the guy that is in whole or part responsible for Lucid Emacs (now known as XEmacs), early versions of Netscape, the Mozilla project, and god knows what else.

77:3:some? 77 - days since I ordered my RW suit. I'm especially PO'd since I was told that I would have it "soon" the last few times that I called. It's a shame, since so many local jumpers seem to like this company's product and service, but I'll be calling tommorrow to set an ultimatum for getting my suit. I hate doing stuff like that, but I hate having to borrow RW suits even more. Solo out of the 182, a fun two way with another low timer, and then (dramatic music) my first big(er) way. 7 way. I wore lead for the first time, which really helped. I'll probably call Square 1 tommorrow and order my own. The lead meant I didn't have to fight with my fall rate, which gave me extra mobility that I didn't have before, which caused me to overamp all of my moves, which made me zoomy, which sent me careening under the formation, which took out the formation. But it was still a great jump, and D-1 signed my logbook for it, as well as giving me some great advice for next time.

No dice. I know he's Canadian, and he uses the handle "murpyfarm1" on eBay. According to google, that handle isn't in use on the web or usenet. He did reveal that he is a skydiver ("For those who are wondering , yes i am a skydiver , and i am using one of these units myself "), and all of his other auctions are for aviation related products. He has also listed another Cypres that is on the unairworthy list.
