Skyhook RSL snag on door handle, at pin cover flap
d123 replied to pchapman's topic in Gear and Rigging
Man you are so right! If it was a skyhook he would be dead!!!!!! edit to add: or verry lucky as other pointed out that it was a skyhook! Lock, Dock and Two Smoking Barrelrolls! -
Off topic but speaking of snag hazards and Cessna, a friend of mine posted this movie on his facebook page that showed me a bad side of RSL/SKYHook + Cessnas combo that I've never seen before: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Bv_NqiT7pM This is one situation where I don't want to do my emergency procedures by reflex. Landings ... I am frustrated beyond belief!!!
d123 replied to OlympiaStoica's topic in Safety and Training
> Both, I think. I think you're right. Here's my experience: On my old spectre, in no wind, when I land on rears (keeping the parasite drag to a minimum) the finish horizontal speed is almost 1.7x (based on my feeling) higher than on toggle landings. That 1.7x factor I see it as the effect of the parasite drag from tail deformation. The diference in air speed from full flight to end horizontal speed in the RR landing is the effect of induced drag (but I don't feel that diference because I'm too high to feel it when I start the flare). One thing that I know is that our modern canopies have a lot of lift. I'm jumping a Silhouette 210 (as a transition to Sabre2 190) and in no wind I'm amazed with how much longer the flare is from full flight. I'm able to fly parallel with the ground for 2 sec and I had a safe vertical speed for landing 1 sec before going level. The only thing that is wild is the horizontal speed. If you're not in your element baling out at high speed it might be tricky and you might hurt your ankle considering you're body is tilted like this / at the end of the flare. Landings ... I am frustrated beyond belief!!!
d123 replied to OlympiaStoica's topic in Safety and Training
This is an interresting subject. What kills more the horizontal velocity in the process of flare? Is it the higher induced drag from the new angle of attack or is it the extra parasite drag that comes from deforming the tail? If its mostly the induced drag then shortening the brake lines will help just like a braked aproach helps it slows down the speed so you can judge better. But this can be done without shortening the brake lines. One can do a braked aproach on its own and its fun to do. On the other hand *everybody* insisting on "finish your flare" which means that the extra parasite drag from tail deformation plays a significant job! If this is true people with short hands will never get good landings because they just cant deform the tail enough so shortening the brakes makes sense. Does it makes any sense to you guys? Edit to add: I'm not talking about the vertical speed because a simple half brake snaped fast it will level you off. On my old Spectre anyway! Lock, Dock and Two Smoking Barrelrolls! -
Yeah....soft landings? How do you do it?

I'm here to represent the Falcon 265 feelings. I've jumped an old, student, low porosity canopy at the Twin Otter Boogie in Saint Fred in the next summer after I've broken my leg. I've jumped that old wing out of Twin Otter. They usually have Cessna's there (just like where I've started) but they rented one for the boogie. I was impress by it! I didn't know in the plane yet but this jump was my 1st landing out! I've did a stand up in the garden of fellow quebecker that was enjoying some work in the garden and I was happy with the canopy, really happy. I've felt free when I've landed out. The owner of the land was nice and he enjoyed asking questions. So you see for me that old lopo wing from Saint Fred was a good experience because it come with all that and I'm here to return the favor! The rig I've jumped was soo old with fabric coming out of the packing tray of main and reserve. I was afraid to jump it but then I've thought logically: This is a regular wing used for students in here and has been used so far with great success even today and I've seen it with my own eyes landing well. If students can do it with 2 jumps I can probably do it with 22 jumps ... and I did it. And I'm thinking the same about the Falcon 265. Take it light, Jean-Arthur Deda. Edit to add: They had a Falcon 240 something and I weight 186 without gear. Lock, Dock and Two Smoking Barrelrolls! -
Yeah....soft landings? How do you do it?

Hey man, You've broke your ankle. That's not that bad. You'll probably going to have "a" pain every day in your life that will not let you forget to be focus in your choices. The pain is not the type of pain that you can't ignore (you can detach from it and enjoy a wide range of activities from snowboard to longboard to skate to skydiving and so on). Learning to land will come from more landings. Learning to respect the unknown and progress to it instead of jumping right into it comes from getting hurt. The good part is that you got hurt earlier and now you got the lesson. This lesson will stay with you in every other sport you'll try, it will make you safe and on the long run you'll find more things to enjoy just because you'll spend more time in that sport ! And please do try more riding sports. Longboarding fixed a lot of my ankle range problems while I was discovering a lot of fun. In 3 years without forcing myself I've naturally progressed to downhill speed-riding and I'm all happy in those moments! I've seen friends of mine, that didn't learned the "get hurt" lesson, getting hurt real bad because they've jump into the unknown while I was progressing to that unknown and many others after it just because of my lucky pain. This pain its a keeper! A ridiculous funny way to think about it: Succeeding in something is just like being pregnant. Everybody congratulate you but nobody knows how many times you got fucked! With a waver involved the current delay makes sense! It's important to make sense of an experience that I'm part of and I don't have control over it. If it doesn't make sense is nonsense(and this is a wide range of possibilities wow just imagine). Anyway thanks the the info it make sense. Lock, Dock and Two Smoking Barrelrolls!

> The FAA has requested some additional information that has not been asked for in the past. Information = Tests? I fail to see what other type of information out there is needed to judge if the reserve is safe. The new fabric has been aproved (we already have aproved smaller optimum), all the tests that were previously required to certify a similar size reserve has been done and now they want more "information". If new information = new tests does this means that the previously approved reserves are not aproved anymore because they were not tested with the new collection of tests? Sigh ... Meanwhile I'm waiting for my optimum. End of rant. Lock, Dock and Two Smoking Barrelrolls!

Thank you Jerm, JohanW, mister Peek! I think I will try to find a way to do those things regularly. Few trivial question about the streamer (think about them as me looking for a guideline): Did you always recover the streamer? Any suggestions on what spot to choose? Any suggestions on how should I approach this experience without getting intro problems (with the DZ, pilot, or something like that)? I have a good feeling about this. Thanks guys! I've also flew and turn with a front and the opposite toggle but all those ingredients are not going into something bigger and they become pointless. Edit to add: That's maybe my point. I've learned a couple of ingredients that don't really go into something bigger that is fun. Does it makes any sense to you guys what I'm saying? If I want to stare at the sky I can do that from a hot air balloon while drinking some wine with friends and listening to music. I would like to discover something about me under that canopy like I've did with any other non competitive sports that I'm doing. Anyway thanks for taking the time. Hey Frost, I did a canopy course in Spain where I've discovered (as a personal experience that I've integrated in my flight habits) The Back Risers (BR turns consumes less altitude, BR flare) and half brake flares. I've also found the limit of the reverse turns and practice dive recoveries. I can land in a tight spot and do turns in flare. The last ones creates a bit of fun but other than that they are more related to necessity than fun. One time I've seen a guy landing straight in doing a slide on his feet instead of running. I've liked that one and in that spirit I'm wondering if there's something safe and fun that I can do at my current level instead of playing the downsize to swoop game. Didn't get any answers at my DZ. Don't get me wrong man, I really appreciate that you take the time to try to answer my questions. Maybe there's nothing fun one can do at this level which is a bit sad. Lock, Dock and Two Smoking Barrelrolls!

So here's where the question comes from. It looks to me that the only progression we have is swooping. That's the only thing we can discover that will give you some fun. It also looks to me that the learning process is no fun at all. I'm looking for something simple that would show that there's more you can do with a canopy. It can be anything like sliding in your flare, maybe jumping in your harness anything that can show that there's fun in canopy. Something that goes with "Half the fun is learning" and that you don't have to go through hell to find something good at the end of the learning process, if you survive. You know what I mean? To give an example (that you can relate to) of what I mean here's the tunnel list of fun things to do and learn that I've discovered (so far): - Belly fly with control levels, rotations, using only your arms, only your legs or both, flying in weird positions all these things I had fun learning them. - Walking in the tunnel was wow... nice. - Same thing for doing the matrix pendulum forward and backward while standing. Damn this is so much fun! - Playing with more wind was like man .. there's another world out there to discover yeah baby !!!! - Playing with less wind was man this is crazy. How low can I go - Back fly was really different but when it clicked it's was like re-discovering confi walking. Personal moving lazy boy! - Transition from stand to back .. fuck man this was fun to learn. - In place Transitions Belly to Back was noice things to play with. .. and the list is currently growing. Same thing for Longboard. As you learn more things you can play with those ingredients to be yourself and that's how you're having fun and it creates your style of riding. What is the list of fun things to learn and do under a canopy? Truly me, Jean-Arthur Deda. Lock, Dock and Two Smoking Barrelrolls!

for me the moment they said that the passenger is opening the chute I've said: Nice... delta down to someone with an nervous hand on the rip-cord! Lock, Dock and Two Smoking Barrelrolls!

All I can say is that back-fly and the transitions helped my belly-fly. Lock, Dock and Two Smoking Barrelrolls!

I've started back flying and just to pointing my heels out when transition to walk was a dificult thing to grasp. I'm pretty articulated with my legs, I do longboarding/snowboarding but all that time I have positive presure (1G+) on them and in the tunnel when that pressure is missing I'm in a bit of a pickle [:D]. Do you know any excercises that I can do outside tunnel to increase my leg awarness? Can anybody related to my situation? Lock, Dock and Two Smoking Barrelrolls!

If you guys are still interesting in "flying in turbulence" what I can do is to inform you that in paragliding world there are exercises (that you do on the ground) that help you build reactions for dealing with turbulence. Speaking with a real paragliding instructor to refine/adapt those exercises for skydiving should be the right way of doing it. I also think that similar exercises don't exists in skydiving for a good reason and that's the fact that we don't really need them (think low aspect ratio, higher speeds and small amount time under wing compared with paragliders) Here's an example of those exercises and I hope that we don't open the pandora box on flying in turbulence because people got hurt from ground handling in gusty winds. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPo082yXc4E&feature=channel_page Regards, Jean-Arthur Deda. Edit to add: I'm talking about the part where he flies with his eyes close (@ 1:50) and not the part where he climbs stuff! Lock, Dock and Two Smoking Barrelrolls!

We, big canopies fliers, can say I'm taking the copilot place this jump (and still have some fun when the plane dives) and go latter in the tunnel for 5 min. Lock, Dock and Two Smoking Barrelrolls!

I can relate! During my AFF I've been unstable ONLY when I was looking at my instructor for signs. One of them got it and give me a "do what you want jump" where he jumps 3 sec after me and dock on to me only if I'm unstable. That jump work perfectly and I've completed my 360's for the 1st time. It meant the world for me! You have to understand/love people/students if you want to be a good instructor/leader! Lock, Dock and Two Smoking Barrelrolls!
