  1. Help, cold weather people! Skymama, you've gotten alot of advice in this thread so I won't give any. I will tell you I was a firefighteron Hilton Head Island, SC and a tenant on the top floor of an apartment building turned off their power at their panel and the pipes up there froze solid.........then when they thawed..........Well........you can guess what happened to every apartment below and on each side of the unheated one. We were there for several hours removing water.
  2. After 9/11 a lot of us Firefighters were sent to explosives emergencies training. We were trained to let explosives burn and evacuate the area. Explosives need a detonation to set them off and a fire by itslelf will not cause a detonation. If they are certain nothing is in there that will detonate from fire, like fused blasting caps, etc., then it might make sense to burn it. Just seems like they could come up with a way to move it out of there. The other thing that does concern me is the toxic fumes and toxic run off from any water they may apply to the site.

    Mirage Ad

Attached is my idea of a good advertisement. It shows a dramatic photo, accompanied by explanatory text, that explains why a rig that WORKS is most important. Not a rig that's pretty, or a rig made by a company that uses sex to make people feel cool. Cool ad. I think I'll print it out poster size and post it in the loft.
  4. You are not out of line and IMO the seller is not out of line either. You and he can do what your comfortable with. Like someone said in this thread, if you really want it then ask for hi res pics and even the contact info of the rigger who packs and maintains said rig. Or, you can move on.
  5. .................If that's NOT the case, hum it to a grand, hook a 270, swoop the pond and REALLY give them a thrill! __________________________________________________ 100% agree
  6. David Kopel addresses this question and many others related to CCW at schools. His article was published in the Connecticut Law Review. I found it easiest to download it first. http://works.bepress.com/david_kopel/10/
  7. I wonder what the cost difference is between detention and trials vs blowing em up.
  8. I sure hope you're right. My wife has been layed off for almost 2 years. She's put about 80 resumes out and done 15 interviews. She got close a couple times, like being in the final 3 but so far, No luck.
  9. The probability is almost zero but not completely at zero. Just my thoughts . . . JerryBaumchen PS) I would hate to be on the committee trying to write a standard for TSO-authorization of an AAD. I suggest not going 'there.' I have no intention of opening up that "can of worms." As far as the very big "if" a cutter could jam on a loop. JMO, the "if" is big enough that I won't jump a rig with a cutter mounted above the freebag or could lock the through loop, in the case of the Racer.
  10. If there were/are such rigs that an AAD failure would prevent the reserve ripcord from being pulled by the jumper or prevent the reserve from opening, the rig needs to be grounded, not the AAD. There are rigs out there that would "lock" the pilot chute in the contaner if the cutter jams on the loop. Talon, Telesis, and VooDoo, to name some of the rigs I've done repacks on, have the cutter placement on a side flap that rests on top of the PC. IMO this is a design flaw that needs to be corrected.
  11. Student mode AADs are designed for students under the supervision of an instructor, and until they attain their A license. When you take the supervision out of the equation the potential for the skydiver to create the perameters for activation is greater. Now add in the A license and smaller canopy and the potential is even greater. Being an instructor, IMO, I would advise the jumper to change the setting to PRO.
  12. Oh I wasn't thinking they'd blow up with age, I'm just wondering that a 10 year old Optimum and a 10 year-old PD will look like side by side, adjusting for all the other factors... . I was thinking along the same lines as well. I was just being facetious I wonder what a pull test would reveal at that time.
  13. IMO the UN has absolutely no useful purpose. Vigilance on our part is imperative to the protection of our freedoms. I'm am relieved that Pelosi and Reid got off on the Healthcare tangent instead of gun control.
  14. As I was reading this post this very question popped into my head and then....voila......you asked it. Well, if Optimums start blowing up in the future we'll have our answer. That is if we don't see any evidence of damage or wear during repacks.
  15. I have to apologize for not introducing myself before jumping in on some of the threads here. I saw so many interesting discussions going on and dove in. I made 200 jumps between 1976 and 1983 took a 23 year layoff and came back at the end of 2006. (After retireing from a 25 year career as a Firefighter/Paramedic.) I've made nearly 800 skydives since then. I got my Senior Rigger Ticket in Jan 2009 and my TI in Mar 2009. When I landed after doing my first jump since 1983 it was an incredible experience, it felt like I had never left. Any way, enough blathering on. Hope to meet many of you along the way.
  16. Try some of this. See Pic
  17. AFF and Static Line are both good methods of instruction. You will get various opinions pro and con as to which is better. My opinion is this. You have a much longer drive to do AFF and have a much higher cost verses SL. On the other hand your going to take longer to progress to an A license. Generally with AFF your freefall skills will develop more quickly than you canopy skills. Generally it is the opposite with SL. There are other factors you may wish to consider as well. Look at your options and decide which one will meet your goals.
  18. DeLay, Rangel, Blago, Charles Colson, Richard Nixon, Bill Clinton etc. etc. Human nature is not a Democrat, Republican, Independent, ect. etc.
  19. Attached a pic of TSAs new promotional campaign posters
  20. True, I was born and raised there. I'm grieved at what has happened to my home state.
  21. This is a very interest Trend. I will be watching this one very closely. I wonder how the supreme court rulings killing the DC and Chicago handgun bans will affect this.
  22. how did the police set up a sting? he really has no legal obligation to return it. my dz had to pay to get a lost cutaway back after it turned up on craigslist. That's awesome she's getting her canopy back. In early 2009 I sent 2 brand new cobalts back to the manufacturer to fix a hard opening problem. Never got em back. Atair went out of business. An alert former employee saw my post in the stolen gear database and e-mailed me. He shipped them and I'll have them back on Monday
  23. Welcome to the fun. Beware of the Raeford Dragon!
  24. Yep, I can't bring nail clippers or shampoo, but leaving a loaded magazine is only cause for "remedial training." No Surprised
