Sounds to me like you've got your money's worth out of the canopy. If I were considering this I'd probably invest the money in a new canopy or a used one in newer condition. Just my opinion.

Well said

Sounds like a lot of work with no guarantee of a serviceable canopy, but, If I were wanting to work on major repair skills this would definitely qualify. I'd go for it. I'd only suggest one thing. When and if you do put a jump on it. Jump it in a Tersh rig. You just can't know how its going to fly.

Campus Concealed Carry likely to make a showing in TX this session

I am absolutely in favor in allowing CHL on campuses. This is already allowed in UTAH. Havn't heard of any issues there. I grew up in the Peoples Republic of Californina in the 60s and 70s. When I was 14 my dad bought a couple rifles for me to shoot at the range. I kept them in my room on a rifle rack and I respected them for what they were. I was home alone one afternoon when a guy did a home invasion on me. He was met with a rifle and quickly decided he didn't want anything and ran. Today You can see the results of further restricting and disarming the people there. Victims, victims, victims. It's just madness. I remember the big hoopla in the 80s when Florida passed their concealed carry law. They claimed that blood would be running in the streets and that it would be like dodge city. It never happened. These arguments against allowing citizens to be armed come from Academics who believe in their position. I respect their right to their opinion, but I disrespect when someone stands by their claims in the face of incontrovertable facts that people who arm themselves for self protection have in some way increased the danger to others. Some claim that young people can't be responsible, especially on campus with alcohol around and the party atmosphere. When my son turned 21 I thought he'd go and get his permit. He didn't. He told me he wanted to think about it. He waited 18 months before he decided to get it. He said it was a big responsibility and wanted to think about it for a while. It really is a matter of maturity but unfortunately law cannot define maturity except to establish an age for it. I know I'm rambling but i'm a father with grown children and old enough for rambling to be considered normal. -
As far as lubricating the cutaway cable I've been told that anytime you put a lubrication material on the cable, it can attract dirt. This is true. However, If 3 ring maintenance is done every 30 days as most manufacturers recommend, then there should never be a build up of dirt in the system. Personally I do like to lubricate the cable. I Use spray silicone on cutaway cables and wipe them dry.

If the owner is there I try to get em to do the cutaway and reserve dump also. I like to offer them a chance to see what condition their rig is in and get them at least involved in some part of the maintenance process. But, alot of people just don't want to be bothered. Its a consumer mentality when it needs to be a participant mentality. People just don't seem to fully appreciate what's at stake.

Yea and it sounds like it went for a swim with Ted Kennedy Too.

I stand corrected, I did forget about the Dacron Option for Sabre. Spectra and Dacron were offered.

Everytime I recieve a rig for reserve repack I do 3 Ring Inspection and maintenance per manufacturers instructions. Rig owners are not doing 3 ring maintenance. The cables are filthy, some have rough spots and even cracks. I found the white loop on one riser nearly worn through caused by a burr on the grommet that passes through the riser. On one rig I've found maintenance had been neglected so long I had to have someone hold the rig for me while I had pull with 2 hands to get the riser to release. After cleaning and exercising the material it functioned normally. I just can't understand why someone neglects the very system that will save their lives.

The Parachute Riggers Handbook 2005 edition states to only use scotchgard in the red can.

PD only makes spectra linesets for Sabres

The possibility of the hook being bent and catching the red lanyard is possible, though, it would take quite an impact to do it. I've packed more than 50 rigs with the skyhook set up and I always give the system a very close inspection. In my opinion the skyhook system does add an extra stage in reserve deployment by having the red lanyard connected to the hook. In the event of a total malfunction the possibility does exist that the lanyard could hang up on the hook. It is man made. The only alternatives you have to effect a reserve deployment is to disconnect the shackle from the riser or even use a hook knife to cut it. . I know this is unlikely but the possibility must be considered.

What Make and Model is the Canopy and what color are the lines.

I've had the same thing happen to me. I had 4 Sigma Tandem Skyhook equipped cutaways. The 4th. Believe it or not, I had a very hard opening followed by violent Spin on an Icarus with the right rear of the main badly tension knotted to the center. Spun like a top 4 rotations before I could cut us away. I pulled both handles in sequence. Opening was much slower and lower than my previous 3. Discovered freebag had separated from main. I can't prove it but I suspect the Spin combined with the magnetic riser covers may have contributed to the pilot chute taking over. Had 3 Sky Hook cutaways on Solo Rigs. 1 on Vector 3(Intentional Cutaway Rig) 2 On a Javelin. All three worked flawlessly. Not spinning mals. I did see the red lanyard break the loop where it engages the hook once when a friend Chopped with a Sigma Tandem. Pilot Chute took over. All I can say is always pull both handles in proper order regardless of what back ups you have. I've have 2 cutaways with capewells back in the day. Took at least twice as long to cutaway with those bastards and Im still here. I'm departing from the subject slightly. Sometimes I think we get so caught up with our gadgets that we forget about our most important piece of equipment. Our Brain. Pull your main high enough to cutaway high enough to deploy your reserve high enough to do so stable and perhaps not have an off field landing.

I concur with washing the Harness and container with a mild soap and rinsing thoroughly with water. Air dry the rig completely. Sending the rig to Mirage for an inspection might be your best option. Washing a canopy is a bit trickier. Improperly washing a canopy is going to negatively affect the permeabilty of the fabric. Gentle agitation by hand in clear water is about all you can do. Perhaps sending it to PD for inspection would be the best solution. They can inspect it and give you their recommendations.

Rob I with you on the issue of jamming javelin PC fabric under the cap with with a paddle. I have found holes in PCs, as no doubt you have as well. There is no excuse for it. I may have beat this horse to death but it just seems to me the FAA loves the color gray. AC105-2c paragraph 11 it seems to allow "A certificated (Senior or Master) and appropriately rated(back, seat, Chest) rigger to make the determination. I'm a senior rigger and I have only been one since Jan 09. I still have a lot to learn which is why I'm raising the question. I've done over 150 repacks since becoming a rigger and I've seen things that makes me scratch my head and I've called rigger friends and manufacturers on numerous occasion. I've found reserves with 3.5 Rapide Links and every manual I've read says 4s 5s or if the reserve manufacturer has approved slinks they can be used. I just repaced some 3.5s with SR1 on a PD reserve on Sunday. The rig had been assembled in 2000. No notes on any link changes so I assume it was assembled that way. I did varify with PD that only Mallion Rapide SS#4 or SS#5 or SR1 slinks can be used with their reserves. Maybe this question merits a new thread. Your thoughts. v
