Could any of these assertions be true? Yes. Are they true? , Are they blame shifting? Are they false? I don't know. I will say one thing though. This seems to have been Aviacom's theme songs since this began.

Anyone talk to Sunrise or Aerodyne concerning Argus?
firemedic replied to riggergreg's topic in Gear and Rigging
Wrote to VSE and their response was that they are going to discuss the issue with Aviacom before taking any action. The reply also said they have not drafted any SB yet. -
I guess the best answer for me is that its just in my blood. I was a firefighter/paramedic for 25 years and when I retired I wanted to do something to help save others. That may sound kind of hokey to some but thats the honest truth. I've had the pleasure of sharing a beer with the guy or gal who used one of my pack jobs and listening to their story.

I can tell you are really stoked. I do not want to put a wet blanket on your fire so all I will say is take your time, talk to your instructors, and do your research. Once you know what you should be looking for you can start shopping. There are usually some pretty nice used rigs for sale that will fit your needs. Other than that, be safe and have fun.

Oh my God! Sometimes the idiocy of the power hungry gun haters just cracks me up.

Cross connector straps on round mains?
firemedic replied to SEREJumper's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
I jumped a UPT cutaway rig so I could demo a skyhook. The chest mounted reserve had a PD 143 in it. I guess the manufacturer can ok a ram air in a chest reserve. -
Just want to chime in here. Wendy: No Law will ever prevent anything without the consent and obedience of the individual faced with the choice. Whether they be gun laws, traffic laws, etc. For those who choose to violate those laws there is only punishment after the fact. Kallend: Making a comparison between Gun Laws and Drunk driving laws are not valid. There is no clearly stated constitutional right to operate a motor vehicle.

H.R. 822, 'National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2011’
firemedic replied to mnealtx's topic in Speakers Corner
Concealed means concealed. Know the state laws and follow them, but if they know you have a gun, you've already screwed up. In my state if you are contacted by a LE you are required to present your permit along with your DL and tell them whether you are carrying or not. My opin was with that context in mind. -

They already do that by not erasing the NICS records as required by law. I'm curious. Does a NICS check require the Serial Number of the gun being purchased or is it just a check to see if the individual is a prohibited person. -

I'm divided on this one. First, I would love it if my permit had to be honored in states like MA, NY, CA, IL. On the other it could be a real pain in the ass to carry in those places. They can always find "reasons" to "detain" you even with a valid permit. Second, I'm not totally persuaded that the Feds should trump the states on this issue. The more control you give the Feds, the more they want. If this bill even makes it past committee to the floor, every pol and his cousin will want to attach things to it. It will probably open the door for the Feds to regulate (register) handguns. Just thinkin out loud. -
I believe that is a Falcon My first thought but I can’t find any info on a falcon native to this area. I looked at some pics of falcons and it's colors aren't exact but it's other features are very close to a peregrine falcon. They are rare but have been spotted in most places in the US. Just a guess. I hope you can positively ID it and post.

So does anyone now what it may be? I believe that is a Falcon

I done lots of repacks on both Jav and Mirage. They are both very good quality, comfortable rigs. Which ever you decide to go with I would follow the advice of some others on here and buy used.

That is a big maybe IMO. At 200' that is not a lot of time and if he cutaway, that reserve would take some time to inflate and that is not affected by having a skyhook or not. He could end up coming in with a partially inflated reserve or he may not have the reaction time to land safely. Cutting it that close is like rolling the dice, whether you have a skyhook or not, you could end up dying. Deploying the reserve is only one part to that complex problem. So I am not convinced that a skyhook would completely change the situation. You are correct to say it is a very big maybe. In this sport there are all kinds of what ifs that can happen. The best we can do is try to be prepared for what ever eventuality may arise. I'm sure he didn't see that collision coming before he boarded the plane but he probably thought about it at some point during his skydiving career. I have. Now, let clarify the point I'm trying to make. First set pro skyhook, anti skyhook, or indifference to skyhook aside. Now just look solely on the circumstances surrounding this incident. The guy cut away too low for his reserve to deploy sufficiently to save his life. If you watch the videos of skyhook deployments compared to those without skyhook assistance the skyhook deployments are significantly faster. I'm not promoting skyhook, just stating what I observed. The only thing I'm considering is whether or not there was an appreciable possibility that a skyhook could have saved his life. IMHO I believe the possibility exists. It's obvious he didn't survive without one.
-
Are you sure that they both chopped at the same altitude? If the guy with the skyhook chopped first and survived and the other guy stayed 2 seconds with the mess and chopped after that, you can't really give the credit to the skyhook. Blue skies I'm not referring to the guy who lived but the guy who did not. From what the report said the guy without the skyhook cutaway at approximately 200'. We know there is no way a reserve can deploy in 200' by pilot chute. If the altitude was correct that he cutaway at 200' what I'm saying is if he had a skyhook and it functioned properly it may have been just enough to save this guys life.
-
Anyway, I still believe that the skyhook is good for the big size reserves. Tandems, student etc. And I still believe that the jumpers are giving it too much credit based on the skyhook promo video. Maybe Not 3-18-2007 Read this in the fatality database. Canopy collision low to the ground. Guy with skyhook lived, guy without skyhook died. Skyhook is not an excuse to become complacent or wreckless. The same goes for an aad. It may have been just enough to make the difference in this situation.

“Hard landing in strong/gusty winds” fatalities
firemedic replied to GLIDEANGLE's topic in Safety and Training
What's most interesting, and disappointing, is that the very people who know best and are most trusted - DZO's, instructors, and high-time jumpers - are the ones setting the example of what is acceptable. After all, your Instructor wouldn't jump if it was too windy, would he? And certainly if the winds are sketchy the DZO would never put his staff in danger, would he? Not much "money where the mouth is" left in this sport. Maybe there's too much money in the sport to fit it all in there. When I started doing tandems I worked at an upper mid west DZ. The winds in the spring were horrendous. 20+ most of the time and often 30+ and gusty. I sat on the ground (along with most of the fun jumpers) but the experienced TIs were all jumping. I was catching tandems and I saw some scary shit the wind was doing to the canopies. I only regretted not staying on the ground once. I let the DZO cajole me into jumping in those winds. I got on the ground and told him I'm done. Unfortunately money mattered to him more than his staff or his customers. -
Can you explain what it did not do? Sorry for butting in. I had the same thing happen to me. I've had 9 chops with the SkyHook system and 1 time it deployed by PC. I know the lanyard was connected because I found it attached to the riser, and I know I properly tied the seal thread on the hook with the lanyard inside. I was spinning pretty fast under a tension knot. I've been trying to figure that one out.

God that was hilarious.

I've stayed in both the bunk house and the skyrider inn. The bunkhouse advantage is cost and proximity. At the Inn it is quieter, more comfortable, private. There is TV if that is a plus also. You would have a bit of a walk to the DZ if you don't rent a car. Next time I go out there I plan to stay at the inn.

A friend in Phoenix sent this to me an hour ago. Not claiming it's true. Just funny. Gun Control Barack Obama at a recent rural elementary school assembly in East Texas, asked the audience for total quiet. Then, in the silence, he started to slowly clap his hands once every few seconds, holding the audience in total silence. Then he said into the microphone, 'Children, every time I clap my hands together, a child in America dies from gun violence.' Then, little Richard Earl, with a proud East Texas drawl, pierced the quiet and said: ''Well, dumbass, stop clapping!'

I'm glad you didn't suggest I'd have to give up mine.
