Student rigs are deliberately oversized and are lightly wing loaded. This is done to make it more difficult for student to kill themselves. The canopy is more docile and easier for a student to handle. (This is the very short version of why) Here's what you need to do (IMHO): Put together a good sized pile of money (or a very large credit card). About $6000 should do. ($2500 for lessons, $3500 for your first set of gear) Next, get as much tunnel time as possible. This will make your lesson jumps much easier and with the basics of flying down, you can devote more time to learning the canopy. Then take yourself down to the DZ and jump. jump, jump. Stay current, as student jump skills build on the previous jump. Once you get your license, sit back and enjoy. -
I was making just over 18k/yr when I got into the sport. It was rough going, but the longer I stayed on the job and stayed away from the trap of wife/child, hearth/home. This got a lot easier. Not really. You don't say where you are looking, but if you are in the northern tier of states, you are way ahead of the season. Things don't start rolling up here until late March (even though safety day is the second weekend). Keep trying until you get a response - go there in person as well- and then follow up persistently. Welcome aboard. First, you'll get used to clearing your ears, it happens to us all. Just pinch your nose and blow. After a while, you be able to clear and won't even think about it. Next, to qualify for your "A" license form USPA, you need to do at least 25 jumps and demonstrate proficiency in the requisite skills. (This is the very short version of what you need to do) Plan on spending about $6000.00 your first year in the sport. Think in terms of about $2.5K for lessons (depending on your performance) and anywhere from $3.5 to 6K for your first set of gear (depending what you buy, used vs new etc...) The good news is that after you've got over that hump, all you need to pay for is jumps (between 15 and 22 per jump) and a reserve repack/inspection every 120 days. That's all. The results of an uncocked pilot chute are unpredictable. Sometimes they work normally, sometimes they work after a delay, sometimes they don't work at all. Don't trust them. You'll find that people either love or HATE the RSL. There doesn't seem to be an in between. I personally have them on all my rigs and use them in all modes except CRW.
