  2. Icarus and the community at large came to the conclusion that a design defect in the original Crossfire contributed to the incidents. The higher riser pressure was a turn off! But only on the ones made in the USA, not Spain. The Crossfire 2 is a totally different canopy that began conception even before the recall even began. Both the Crossfire 2 and the Safire 2 are different canopies as a whole as from the earlier versions. *** If you need more info, please contact me directly. Thanks, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

  4. I think you had a beer before you said you would...... The loose beer cap was the clue..... I am still working on a way to loose the cable in the center and leave the cable on the ends without making a loop of the cable (too big) We still come back to all cable though, but I hate it. 8. So If I intend to jump the parachute next I can alter it all I want. So I can offer alterations with no qualifications put one test jump on it then give it back and stay with in the regs. *** Absolutely not! Read the complete regulations and not of one paragragh. The test questions in the written should be enough for you. If you answer the written test questions with Derek's mis-belief, you will not answer them correctly. The test questions where revised two years ago, so they are correct to the Current FAR's. Derek even has them on his web site, check them out. All the written exams have questions in plain english that assure the FAA that you understand the FAR's as they stand. Do not believe someone simply because they post on DZ.com alot. Do your own research! MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com
  9. That is your mis-interpretation of the FAR's. I train riggers about everyday and how contact with the FAA about every two weeks if not more. When you took your written test, you had at least (3) three quections pertaining to the FAR's and what your legal limitations were... who can do what and when. These questions are put there so that you do not have any doubts about who, what and when. Look it up .. you must have missed forgot them, one or the other!! MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com
  10. *** Apples and oranges...... So, you believe that a tandem master, can alter a parachute as long as he/she is the next to jump it..... Come on Derek!!!!!!!!!!! Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com
  11. That is the old FAR, it has been updated and now states: "(b) No person may pack, maintain, or alter any main parachute of a dual-parachute system to be used for intentional parachute jumping in connection with civil aircraft of the United States unless that person— (1) Has an appropriate current certificate issued under this subpart; (2) Is under the supervision of a current certificated parachute rigger; You may pack and maintain under a Senior rigger. Pack, maintain, and alter if working under a Master rigger Packing may be under both a Master or Senior Rigger *** (4) Is the parachutist in command making the next parachute jump with that parachute in a tandem parachute operation conducted under §105.45(b)(1) of this chapter." *** For Tandem Instructors. Here if the Tandem instructor packs one parachute to jump, then jumps another that a tandem instructor without a riggers certificate happened to pack, that jump would be illegal. As you can now see, each has it's own limitations. MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com
  12. QuoteAny employee of the manufacturer can do major repairs while working for the facility, with or without a riggers certificate. ( go figure!) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ... provided that all repairs pass a TSO inspector. *** I was refering to Non-TSO'd canopies, but you are correct regarding Reserve canopies. Even still, you are correct in respect that the work has to pass some type of inspection at the facility whether it be a certificated canopy or not. MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com
  13. I agree with everything you said except the item below Any employee of the manufacturer can do major repairs while working for the facility, with or without a riggers certificate. ( go figure!) A manufacturer cannot upgrade your certificate, only the FAA can authorize you to do something like that. It also would have to be in writting from the FAA. Cheers and Beers, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com
  14. From an Inspector, same as the one I have. The fact that we have 2 opposite interpretations from 2 Inspectors tells me that the FAR's are not very clear and can be interpreted differently. That is your definition which I believe to be very wrong. I hope this thread dies in the near future. I have spent too much time on this thread! I guess we will continue the wait! 15. Beezy, you are right again. The test questions in the faaa written exam help clarify the picture a little. In essance only a master rigger can modify and alter a parachute --- main or certificated. as far as the relining, look at AC 105-2C. it tells you plainly that only a master rigger can do major work to a parachute. It gives replacing lines as an example. The ones that refuse to accept it as read , are generally senior riggers. Why, I don't know. As far as the Inspector at the FSDO, I talked to him also and found out he knew very little about rigging. I believe his field is instruments/avionics?? I aslo have asked for an interpertation and got a written one and a verbal one both reflecting what I have stated above. I had forwarded the email to Derrick some time ago. I am still waitng for the "formal" one from the FAA legal department in Washington. MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com
  16. So why do you jump from 300 feet and less? MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

  18. Nope- the Arial is a Sabre I type canopy. It came out before the Nova. The Esprit was after the Nova. The Arial is a better opening canopy than the Sabre I and has the same basic flight characteristics. MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com
  19. It cuts down on the number of seams in the nose area, thus making the airfoil/nose smoother. MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

When I am away, Para Concepts takes on the complete work load. Also, a new service center coming soon on out on the West Coast for a grand total of three service centers. 24. Mick, I have never seen one with the TSO markings on them like the rest of the componets are labeled. As listed in the AS-???? code, all four of the required markings should be present to be a legal TSO'd item, especially item "c".That particular label is the one I have never seen on the ripcord. The rig that I helped TSO, we just listed the part # of the ripcord assembly (As you did) which looks like it never complied with the AS code. We treated the ripcord assembly like a consumable, alot like the guide rings (hardware) on the reserve risers. Now, it looks like that was wrong according to the AS code listed in a previous post. I was just looking at the various rigs that I own, most have a manufacture date or forging # only on them. I did find a s/n and part # on a Mirage soft handle reserve ripcord. That is two out of the four required markings. I guess my point is, A TSO'd item is supposed to be identified as such. If a Harness container is missing the actual label that says TSO23c(d) or what ever, and all the other required markings, the harness/container no longer has a valid TSO. I just went through this exact same problem with the seat belts in one of my airplanes. The labels where worn off (missing some info), therefore I had to buy new ones with the labels. It sounds like the PIA might want to sort through this one. Thanks for the info Mickey. It looks like Mirage and yourself are the closest ones to having all of the required markings.
