  1. Rob, We here at Skyworks use a small oven to preheat the plastic for 30 minutes @115-125 degrees. it is then removed and sewn into place. The plastic then sews like butter and the plastic seems to last longer. The lack of generated stress during needle penetrations when it is cold would be my guess. 2. Alexy, The stifferners that are sewn tends to break in the sewn areas over time. The use of MDS plastic has somewhat lessened that problem though. The stiffeners that are captured, not sewn, sometimes break/tear out of the surrounding fabric over time. MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com
  3. Dawn, That rig is a major conversation piece here in the shop. I still have the cut Ty-wrap that came off of it to show to people. It rates right up there with the rig that Sandy Wambach was going to pack at West Point. That rig had a piece of type II-A tied around it like a Molar strap when she pulled it out of the freebag !!!! It was packed previously by another rigger before she got it to repack. No way that canopy would have ever opened.... MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com
  4. That would be Section C- Paragraph (2)..... There are several here with very good reading skills, but are lacking in the interpretation skills area. But the person with less than a 100 jumps gets it. Go figure. There the "user" for maintaining TSO'd equipment would be a rigger. Ever hear of a non-certificated USA rigger legally packing a reserve in the USA? ( without supervision!!) That is where you stray, but the double edged sword of 65.119 gets you. (Read carefully Derek, I am quoting an FAR that says the have to have the manual) All Manufacturers in the USA(I did not call RI but assume they also do) require the instructions to be present. With that said, 65.119 makes it mandatory to have the instructions present.. ---foot note for Derek---65.119 is a FAR Also,I had a call with other FAA Business yesterday, and was talking to my principal at the FSDO and this subject came up. They agree that the instructions have to be present. So, as far as my region. The FAA has made a ruling as to that effect yesterday. This thread is dead... and I gotta go make a skydive or ten. 5. Very True!! The Pratical test standards are available to everyone, but the Oral and Pratical Test is NOT. See Below... This test is the property of the United States Government and is not to be copied or reproduced without special permission from the Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration. CONTROLLED ITEM (Test Material) Hopefully education is taking place from this. So who is the Liar? I work seven days a week in my shop also. But I still take the time to try to help people understand things that they maybe should understand better. MEL Skyworks Parachute Service And I do not know why the text is coming out in bold! 6. That would be Section C- Paragraph (2)..... (2) The manufacturer must furnish to the user of the article one copy of the data and information specified in paragraphs c(l)(ii) and c(l)(v). This data and information is necessary for proper installation and use and for continued airworthiness of the product or article. Again.......... 7. Sparky, You need to rotate your computer monitor 180 degrees. It must be upside down or you are not following or reading the thread. MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com
  8. Could not agree more. MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com
  9. Mark, The TSO requires that the instructions be provided for installation and continued airworthiness (use). With a certificated canopy and H/C that would be at the inspection and repack cycles. Again, refer to the part for "continued airworthiness', that would be a rigger doing that not the owner unless the owner just so happens to be a rigger. Those canopies would be non-certificated, so the TSO paragraph does not apply. I agree to some extent. But with the controlled copy( not available to everyone) of the oral and practical rigger exam that I have here, the Performance Standard states of what and how the rigger is to perform his or her duties. There is also a Given as to what is to be used. And you guessed it... the manufacturers instructions! Like RiggerRob stated earlier, the enviroment of using the instructions just because you passed the test and have a rigger's certificate, should not go away. Anyway, how's the Juki doing !!!! 10. Flaming starts here............. Derek, You are starting to show your ignorance here. Fact--it is in black and white... 65.119 says you will comply with both the procedures of both the FAA and the manufacturer. The TSO requires a copy of the instructions to be used...period Also all manufacturers that I have called require the instructions to be used.. Does not matter..pick one .. not using the instructions in either case is a violation of 65.119 So what about that do you not understand!!!!!!!! An image of a rock comes to mind!!!!!!!!! 15. It has to be the guy that gave me rig with a neon green plastic Ti-wrap around the lift web and the reserve ripcord. It had been there all weekend while jumping it, after a non-jumper gear checker, "checked" the gear in for a boogie. He never even knew it would probably prevent him from pulling the ripcord. After he found out about it, he never came back for the rig...still have it to this day. MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com
  16. That is about right. It is 4-5 business day ground ship to CA vs 1-2 business day ground ship to SC. MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com
  17. *** QuoteHow long does it take to get a Line set from PD? We keep most PD line Sets in stock. PD usally takes about 4-7 working days to get them to you if they don't have them in stock. For them not to have a Sabre 190 line set on the shelf would be unusal. MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

  19. Sparky, Several comments here, As A DPRE, my position is somewhat different than yours. I would fail an applicant if he or she did not use and have available the manufacturer's instructions. That decision would be based on several areas. As to the later part of the paragraph, I agree 110%!!! I guess my working with the government for 24 plus years reading and writting procedures, I understand the intented language better than most. There are other areas to focus on but let us look at FAR 65.119 in a different view than the TSO. 65.119 (e) Pack, maintain, or alter a parachute in any manner that deviates from procedures approved by the Administrator or the manufacturer of the parachute; or (f) Exercise the privileges of his certificate and type rating unless he understands the current manufacturer's instructions for the operation involved and has— Fact - 65.119 is a FAR that is to be followed by a certificated rigger when packing a reserve. Fact - If The manufacturer requires the instructions to be used when packing their product ( I do not know of one that does not), Then you have to have it according to 65.119. Fact - Not having it (if required by the manufacturer)would be a violation of 65.119 Also, if you have the time, find the preamble to the rule of 65.119. It is included in there some where.it will give you more definition to the rule. Contact your local FSDO. For reference, the preamble is the "long version and description" of the rule. Another fact is the that the preamble is referenced during rulemaking and is law. The FAR's that listed are simply condensed versions or readings of the preamble to the rule. Let's move on! 20. Ask SkymonkeyOne, I think he may have had one around 1991 or 92. Our Video guy had one then and was at the time a fast canopy! MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com
  21. Thanks for the link! That manual does not have the other method for the Dacron that earlier manuals had illustrated. MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com
  22. That is my thoughts. MEL MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com
  23. Actually, PD has two methods in the manual. One for Spectra and the other for Polyester or Dacron. You have 1000 lb Spectra (microline) . It is tied in a "figure 8" fashion that is to be used for the Dacron.(i.e The wrong version) That Toggle can come off the way it is tied now. It needs to be tied the other way. Also do not cut the excess yet! I agree! Blue ones, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com
  24. No, it isn't. You have not quoted an FAR that says you have to have the manual to pack a reserve. Derek Derek, You have wasted enough of my time already! You are missing one thing that Sparky, Riggerrob, Chuck, myself, and others have had in past post. That would be admitting you are wrong or did not know something. I can not find one instance of that in your past posts or at least the ones I reviewed. But maybe I wrong about that.... MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com
  25. I am reading the FAR's at face value, not reading into them or twisting them. You have yet to show where the FAR's say you must have the manual to back up your posistion that you must have the manual. *** Derek, It is in black and white in the above post!!! Every one else that has emailed me figured it out. Tunnel vision can be a very bad thing sometimes. The reason some people can't see the ball after kickoff is they are focused on the scoreboard!!!
