  1. , refers to reserves/Harnesses/rserve containers. FAR Part 65.111 (b) refers to the main canopy and main container. So, only a Master Rigger (or manufacturer) can alter or make major repairs to reserves/harnesses/reserve containers. But the people listed in 65.111(b) can alter, make major repairs to the main canopy or main container. Derek I don't see where it says 65.125 only applies to reserves. You make a very good arguement with 65.111 that anyone can do these things to the main they are jumping next (although it does not explain what an "appropriate" certificate is for performing these things on other's canopies), but it goes against everything I've been told and what I have read from the rigger's study guide I've read. So now I'm confused. *** It can be quite confusing but do not let it get that way! I assume that you are getting ready to take the written, and if so, stick to the reference material and you will be fine. The Far's are in great need of rebuilding and Sandy Reid now has that project in hand. It will be a long time coming and alot of hard work ahead to complete it. I for one would like to make them into one rating for a parachute rigger that encompasses all the ratings into one. That issue is being pushed at this time! But until then, confussion will rein! (a) No person may pack, maintain, or alter any personnel-carrying parachute intended for emergency use in connection with civil aircraft of the United States (including the reserve parachute of a dual parachute system to be used for intentional parachute jumping) unless that person holds an appropriate current certificate and type rating issued under this subpart and complies with §§ 65.127 through 65.133. There is no difference in 65.111 and 65.125 in regards to TSO'd equipment. "14 CFR Part 65.111(b) states, "No person may pack, maintain, or alter any main parachute of a dual-parachute system to be used for intentional parachute jumping in connection with civil aircraft of the United States unless that person ? 1. Has an appropriate current certificate issued under this subpart; Appropiate means Master Rigger when doing Major repairs, alterations, and modifications. This is spelled out not only in the FAA written test questions, but also the DPRE test modules. Any person can work under a Master rigger and complete the work, but the Master rigger is the one to sign it off. The intent of 65.111(b) is basically for packing and etc. If the FSDO inspector sent that out to you; he/she needs to research further into the FAR's because they are dead wrong! The end result is Major repairs, alterations, or modifications outside of the manufacturer, have to be done by a Master Rigger or someone under his direct supervision. And line repair is cosidered to be a major repair. BS, Mark Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com
  3. Actually not true. Only a Master Rigger or someone under his direct supervision(Definition of supervision is listed in Part 105.3),can alter, make major repairs, modify, or make changes to a component of a parachute assembly. It does not matter if it is a TSO'd component or not. I do not know exactly where that got started.Look under Major Repairs in the FAR's and you will find there is no distinction between the two(TSo'd ver NON-TSO'd). A Senior Rigger's responsibilities are generally limited to Assembling, packing, and maintaining parachutes. Line repairs are listed in the FAR's as a major repair,i.e.. I will look it up today and post the location. Now back to the original thread....... There are Master Riggers out there that can do great work in regards to quality and craftsmanship installing line sets and I would be glad to Pm a list of the ones that I know abroad. 5. A Sabre 170 should have 1000 lb. lower control lines and 725 lb. upper steering lines(UST's) on it! Also, the Spectra line that CSR makes is 725 lb., not 825. PD uses the number of 825 to indicate coated line versus the 725 that is uncoated used on their reserves. Masterrigger1 Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

  7. Rene, Please give me the info on the canopy with the folllowing info: *New or used canopy *How many jumps *Size of canopy We have a domed slider that works well with harder opening canopies. We feel that the "pocket slider" is not quite the total answer, although they do work on some canopies Thanks, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com

  9. Why didn't they send them back to us to put the stock trim back on? They would have gotten thier money back + shipping since it was a money back guarantee. But that's right....your shop used to do the mod, until Derek contacted Simon about it. The canopies were sent in for a complete reline and the customers wanted the canopy back to the original configuration As a matter of fact I recieved one Monday, Safire 139, S/N -94613289 that is to be returned to stock trim. Check your records...........! Now as far as the Simon thing, We have never talked about not doing Dereks mod in any manner, just ask him.It is a very moot point anyway, we simply do not want and will not do them according to Dereks formula. You guys have the shop number, call us if you have any further concerns. MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com
  10. I have seen Safire1's with a new line set with upper control lines of different lengths, similar to my mod. I know of at least 2 lofts that have or do use my mod, without asking me. Hook Hook, Which 2 would that be? I know it is not my shop as I have told you before we have removed many mods off canopies that you have done and out of the three that we did with your mod measurements, only one elected to keep it. We do offer a Safire II type upper contol system to our customers, but the measurements are not as "aggressive" at the outside attachment point. As far as canopies upper control lines that are similar to "your mod". There are many canopies that use that concept and had been using it well before you came up with your computations, i.e. Triathalon rev.4, Stiletto, Viper, Cobalt, Crossfire, Sabre1 190-230 etc. The big Sabres were actually the first which I saw that used longer inside control lines to ease the openings. A good concept in the early ZP years! Blue ones, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com
  11. so what, you mean you can't have those 4 line attachments just alone with no line??? damnit later I mean there is no way you could fly it------ I would still have it hanging and looking for the last 4 lines somewhere in the loft!!!!!!!!!! MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com
  12. QuoteThe mod doesn't affect the front risers pressure or recovery arch at all. It is done to the upper controle lines only, no other lines are touched, so the canopy reacts exactly the same during front riser turns. Well as long as your steering lines are long enough to not deflect the tail when you pull down on your fronts. Relining with the complete safire2 line trim will give you a shorter recovery arch and I think a bit higher front risers pressure since they change the trim on all the lines not just the steering lines. I have heard several complaints from people use to the safire1 recovery arch who sent their safire in for a reline and it came back with a 2 lineset. I have also heard from people who wanted the 2 lineset and were much happier with it rather than the 1. So I guess choose your poison.[/reply Guys, It would be very difficult to install the Safire II line Set on a Safire I. There are 20 line attachments on a Safire I and only 16 on a Safire II, also they are totally different trim and line lengths. The Safire I and II are just completely different canopies! 13. Gary, Here is what our records show: * PO#291 FX -104 that was actually a FX-111 when it arrived at the Service Center. We built line Sets for both sizes. * Purchase Order originated on 11-13-01 *Shipped 12-21-01 to Sebastian while you where there via UPS. I can post a tracking # if you like! 14. I believe you may be incorrect. The problem seems to be related to brittle steel and there is no known cause. Capewell can not isolate the problem to a specific batch of pins, style of pin, or manufacturing defect. If you look at the PSB, on page 2 you will see both straight and angled pins depicted. You will not see a pin with blades like many used on Sun Path Javelins. I called Sun Path last Thursday and they too were confused, so they checked with Capewell. The word I received from Sun Path last Thursday, July 17, was to check all of their pins that are in the date range. This was specified again in a release from Sunpath on July 17, 2003. Tom Buchanan Sr. Parachute Rigger S&TA, The Ranch Tom, You are right! I thought the two views where a top and right side view of the same pin --- They are not! Just talked to Norman @ Sun Path Their pins are listed as #55A6480 which are straight pins. Another thing, introducing chlorides (from the indelible markers) to Stainless Steel is not a good thing. Stress Corrosion Cracking (SSC) is a possible by-product. The saga continues. Masterrigger1 Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com
  15. Please read the service bulletin carefully! The applicable ripcord pins are all angled pins; not the newer straight pins used by Sun Path Products. I have yet to see an oringinal Sun Path soft ripcord with an angled pin. Although it is possible that a "generic" ripcord could have been installed on a newer rig after a cutaway. 18. Hey Guys, Let me explain a couple of points, hopefully covering some of the concerns and questions about Icarus Canopies and the servicing of them by Skyworks Parachute Service. We do give out final measurents for the linesets if they are asked for by the Master Rigger that hopefully installed them or any other person wanting to inspect a canopy for proper trim. We will not give out complete measurements for line manufacturing simply for the fear of someone possibly improperly manufacturing them. This is a common practice that most all canopy manufacturer's have and seem to follow very closely. We have given some information to certain individuals to whom we know to have the knowledge, skills, and equipment needed to properly rig a canopy. As far as contacting us, please call with any questions @ 803-377-2705 between the hours of 8:00 - 5:00 EST Thanks, MEL Mark E. 20. Totaly not true! All of the rigs that are modified in our loft are in complance with the FAR's. A field approval is issued by our local FSDO for all H/C's when they are completed.Relative Workshop does not have to give an approval to a loft to have this done. A letter of request (not a 337)is presented to the local FSDO. Their enginerring group reviews the request and either aproves or disapproves it. 21. Hook, I think that it is the "load" that is applied to the grommet on the slider that makes the difference. The grommet/line friction generates X number of degrees. More heat = more shrinkage. The bigger canopies do wear the slider grommets more I think. This theory also proves to be true when someone has a very rapid opening. More heat from the fast opening resulting in more rapid shrinkage. Just my observations. Blue ones, MEL Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com
  22. We have relined a few Stillettos with Vectran over the years. My personal canopies (120 Stilletto) all have vectran on them now. In fact, earlier tonight I had a discussion with a good friend of mine regarding this exact subject. The canopies fly as well after 300-400 jumps on the lineset as they did when they were new.Spectra shrinks and degrades the canopy performance jump after jump even though it does not show excessive wear to the end user. I personally think Vectran is the better line option all around. After reading several of the post to this thread, I would like to clarify a couple of things. First Vectran does not shrink. At least in the several hundred canopies that we relined last year alone, I did not find one lineset with shorter dimensions that the oringinal dimensions. Vectran does stretch, but not nearly as much as Dacron. It does wear faster though. I had a post a few months back talking about the differences of line and their performance values and maybe you can locate that thread. Email me if you need any further info. 23. Hookit, You bet! I had a friend of mine that almost died under one of those a few yearsback(reserve sniveled forever!). 24. Actually, My belief is that the Cricket reserve is a stronger built reserve than the PD143R. I own a few of both makes of canopies. We have also been involved in serveral different drop tests involving the Glide Path/Flight Concepts canopies, along with other brands, and have witnessed first hand how strong they are. They are built like "Tanks". The PD canopies do have a bit better landing flare though, but not by much. Masterrigger1 Skyworks Parachute Service, LLC www.Skyworksparachuteservice.com
