  1. Those formed over WTS on day, and Mike Mullins, who knows lots about the weather, pointed them out and called them exactly that, indicating that they were a sign of tornadic activity and at least severe thunderstorms. He also said that we did not want to be skydiving near them, nor did he want to be flying near them. ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com

  3. >>Why would you not want your slider coming down over the links?
  4. PLF. Seriously. I actually broke my tailbone when I had about 50 jumps. There was no need for it. If the (head)wind just stops blowing over the ground, your canopy will dive to get its airspeed back. If this happens low, you hit the ground. So be ready to PLF. 6. If you have high jump numbers, you probably know who Marcus Antebi is, and you probably will not fall for things like this: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1807822#1807822 I love that this comes up every six months or so. I really have to meet Marcus someday so I can congratulate him. ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com

  9. I drive a 2001 Chevy Tahoe, and I carefully monitor its (lack of) fuel economy. I get better mileage in the city than on the highway (supports the slower is better proposition in a big way, since I am stopped a good bit in the city), but I get better highway mileage at 70 mph than at 65 mph. So while the laws of aerodynamics are, as AndyMan put it, immutable, apparently my particular engine is more efficient at slightly higher rpm. 10. What a coach is authorized to do and what a specific coach actually does are two different things. I got my coach rating so I could take AFF grads on skydives. I had to demonstrate that I could teach a FJC, but I do not do that. More experienced people do. There are certain aspects of skydiving that I am able to teach with competence. There are others I am not. I know the difference. Brent ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com
  11. Gas was $4.00 per gallon near my house last night. They were out of regular. The news says this is due more to logistical problems around getting gas to retailers rather than an actual overall shortage of gas. The supply is there (it exists), it is just not right there (at the gas station), if you know what I mean. I tend to believe this. I am hopeful that some of this will resolve itself in the next few days. ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com
  12. >>I also find that most people think they are better than their jump numbers...Funny thing is if most people tend to think that, and if they are actually correct then no one is "only" as good as their jump numbers.

  17. Perhaps in addition to asking about jump numbers, we should ask about bonfire time. When I started jumping, the weather sucked a lot - I was at the dz for tons of weather days. But I brought my beer and ate Judy's food and listened to anyone who would talk to me, including some folks that I have since learned to ignore. I learned a ton before I had ten jumps, including an appreciation for the wisdom of folks who have just been around a long time. Now, time in sport is not a perfect measure, either. There are jumpers who come to our dz and do two jumps every three months whether they need them or not and then hit the road home with their gear unpacked in a gear bag. Some of those folks have been in the sport 10 years or more. But they have fewer jumps than I do, and some of the stuff I hear them say makes me cringe. 20. Do they offer disability insurance? My life insurance pays if I die skydiving, but the disability policies I have inquired about exclude TONS of high risk activities, many of which I would not have considered all that high risk, such as being a passenger in a non-commercial aircraft. ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com
  21. I have refused to do a "coach jump" with a stranger to our dropzone due to some confusion regarding his recent jumping history. I think he wound up going through a FJC followed by a shortened AFF jumping progression. ---------------------------------- www.jumpelvis.com
