No idea, but what's the point in reinventing the wheel here? I'm thinking the original poster did not know about the Precision product. I looked at it as cost versus function. I actually wanted to get one of those a few years back but the expense was prohibitive. Unless you got a DZO to buy a tracker you basically had to get a tracker and a chip for yourself, and it ended up being a 600 dollar solution for one canopy. Through the kick starter for the IOTA I am getting one tracker, and two devices for canopies for only 160 bucks. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

Kinda looks like you re-purposed the old bonehead boomerang mold lol. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

Wasn't it pretty expensive? "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

I think the same thing too, every single one has great exits and arched perfectly, unless they come back for instructional jumps and keep pulling the same routine! "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

What is your dog in this fight? The Argus is a piece of shit, and now it is a poorly supported piece of shit with lots and lots of use restrictions. People bought them to save a buck over other options, and it cost them. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

I jumped on this: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1226890823/iota-never-lose-sight-of-whats-important It was the best looking solution I have seen to date. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

It isn't just the snag points, cameras alter behaviors. It has been discussed in at least a 1000 other threads. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

Mmmm, no. It's like saying companies whose main offices, officers, CEOs, BODs, HQs are located in one state, but are "incorporated" in Delaware for tax and legal reasons. That's bullshit. It's as bullshit as offshore bank accounts. Please tell me how those mechanics work? My clients would be very interested to hear how they can avoid being taxed in states where they have physical nexus, simply because they are incorporated in Delaware. I already started the process with them. How long did it take them to turn around a new camera? I use this thing every weekend! "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

That is what I was afraid of. Unfortunately I think Chuting Star won't return it, it is almost two months since I purchased it. So I am probably going to be stuck with the time frame of a GoPro warranty claim. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

I am experiencing some issues with one of the 3+ cameras that I use for handicam. I am reaching out to GoPro but I thought I would run this by you folks as well to see if you have any thoughts. On random images the camera is taking stills with artifacts in the image. This is on the maximum photo size, haven't had a chance to try on a lower setting because I just noticed at the end of the day last weekend. It looks like vertical lines, almost like you ran it through a photoshop filter to be artistic. It doesn't happen on every image, and it happens on the ground, in the plane, and in freefall so it doesn't appear to be restricted to a specific lighting condition. I am using Sandisk ultra's since I am not recording video at HD. The memory card specs should be sufficient to should 14mb stills, they are class 10+. Any input would be great! Possible Cutaway GPS Tracker Solution - Iota
DougH replied to rohicks's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I jumped in for two Iota's and one home base. What the hell. I have been hoping something like this would come along. Now I hope it hits its goal and actually gets funded, and I actually get my stuff! "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P -
Possible Cutaway GPS Tracker Solution - Iota

This looks great. I may actually jump on the kick starter campaign. If you have a 4g phone with a wifi hot spot you can take the home base on the road with you. If a cutaway gets outside of the range of the home base move the home base in the general area of the cutaway based on the uppers and where you cut-away. You can write-off anything. When I buy stuff (sometimes including beer) to make food for DZ cook outs I expense it as group meal which are 100% deductible. One of the requirements is that such spending is available to all employees (in other words not a c-suite executive brunch at the country club), and is consumed on site during company business, by three or more employees. The deduction is intended for companies that are catering a lunch for a company celebration, or a training. I think buying beer for the dz, to be consumed at the dz, is in the spirit of the deduction. But I say that with my CPA hat off and locked in my desk at work!! Keep the receipts and write down who consumed, the business purposes, etc. You could argue that chatting up the hot waitress about skydiving makes that meal a business meal, subject to a 50% deduction. The IRS is free to argue otherwise under audit. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

You should trick out that Prius like this! Doubt it. I bought it only because the car payment would be offset by the gas savings compared to the Audi. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

A4 is sidelined with a cracked head/bad head gasket. Went full bad ass and bought a used 2010 Prius. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

First ever boogie coming up, pretty nervous.
DougH replied to Kalrigan's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Be the first to sit down when the weather looks iffy, or there is a storm in the distance that others think they are going to beat. Don't just dirt dive your free fall, plan your canopy flight well and actively manage it. - Think about how your wing loading might compare to the other jumpers on the load. If you are the lighter loaded jumper use your brakes to let other traffic land first. Always try to manage your canopy ride to increase separation on landing. - Think about possible areas that will have less traffic. Better to take a long walk than to be carried away from the congested beer line. - Find all of the other jumpers on opening and keep your head on a swivel. You should be looking behind above and around you at all times, even when flying the legs of your landing pattern. - Leave the spiraling at home. I know I am a buzz kill but it causes all types of traffic problems. Find the organizers and be forward about your experience level and wanting their help. If you don't inject yourself into the boogie you can find yourself on the sidelines. Have fun, be safe! -
Demo canopy - loading a Spectre 97

Triathalon with the corners cut off! "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P -
Basically you didn't do a braked approach. For a braked approach you fly the pattern with some amount of toggle input. It can be 1/4, 1/2, or deeper. The deeper the application the slower the airspeed. This changes the sweet spot of the canopy in the toggle stroke, the initiation height, the speed of the toggle stroke, and amount of input needed. All else being equal less airspeed equals less lift, and less flare. Flying a brake approach gives you more time to evaluate your landing area for obstacles, and it slows your decent. There are a number of other considerations like how it impacts your glide slope which depends on canopy type and wind conditions. You need to know what to expect when flying a braked approach, this is a good talk for your instructors. It sounds instead like you did a staged flare and without being able to have seen the landing or see a recording of it we are all just playing Miss Cleo. My guess is that by apply half brakes you unintentionally started the move towards the sweet spot at way too high of a initiation altitude which often requires additional input to landing and a strong finish, and when the canopy didn't get that input it started the recovery phase of the flight cycle, got out in front of you, and picked up speed. Why did you try to land this way? Were you trying to apply something your instructor told you about off landings. A two stage flare is a totally different beast, and I think you would be suited best by learning it from someone in person! "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

Amazing amounts of energy involved in rail cars. The amount of weight and stored energy is hard to comprehend. Even the flat and box cars themselves are massive when empty. I worked at a Naval base through college that used a government only railroad to move around munitions and such. Saw the aftermath of a civilian railroad not properly engineering a load of 50+ empty flat cars. They stretched them all out, and then let them come crashing together. Threw the 50 ton cars 1000 of feet in every direction, looked like a game of pickup sticks with heavy steel! Doesn't need to be loose spikes, or a curve at speed, you can derail them a 100 different ways! "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P
