Do you want me to make fun of you? Where is the hell is this thread going? "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

How Old? should you be for skydiving?
DougH replied to kungen's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I don't think you can use age as a bench mark for all individuals. I have met some people at 17 years old who I thought were very mature. I have met some 21 year old skydivers that I wished were as mature as the previously mentioned 17 year olds. Here in the us 18 is a common minimum age because when you are under 18 you can't waiver away your right to sue. Some drop zones take younger students but they are taking a legal risk. Only you and your instructors will know if your ready for skydiving. Just keep it serious, as fun as the sport is, it can still kill you!! That is a bunch of crapola. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

So I am curious, what was your response when he approached you about this post and told you weren't welcome there? "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

Would do you load the Raven at? I have never flown ANY reserve (I have been meaning to demo the same size smart that I have in my reserve tray) so when I got gear I had to go off of every one elses opinions. Most of what I read, or heard from skydivers in person was that the old reserves don't like being over 1:1. So is this mostly true? "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

I agree, keep checking, awesome deals will keep popping up. If I was you I would keep my eyes peeled for a newer container, with a newer reserve like a smart, or a pdr. I pass up on a lot of deals because I would rather not get a rig with a 15 year old reserve.

No it doesn't... mine is in color. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

I already did that, he can find packing instructions at the drop zone. Insert beer and out comes packing lessons. To the OP, in all honesty I am not trying to bust your balls. I first tried to learn packing by going to aerodynes website and using their instructions. I wanted to try and learn how to do it and save some embarrassment on the DZ. For me there was something lost in translation. I looked at the pictures, read the text but it didn't help much It wasn't until one of my friends who is a packer walked me through it a few times that I really started to get it. If I go back to the site the instructions seem crystal clear, but at the time they might as well have been a alien language. This may be ironic since I spend way to much time on this website, but I think a lot of things should be learned the old fashion way.

Sorry to hear that Corey, my condolences. Give me a call if you would like to talk and blow of some steam. It really sucks to lose a pet, but I don't think it the right thing to go after the vet either. There is a danger in any surgery, even minor ones. My grandfather went in for a simple surgery this year, and it started a cascade of events that ultimately led to his passing. http://www.dropzone.com/safety/Boogie_Safety/index.shtml There is a good article or two on boogies in the Saftey section.

16? What comes 16 to a pack? Cloves? I actually am horrible at saving lately because I am to lazy to cook a meal at home. It isn't hard to rack up a 20 dollar bill at a resturant around here. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

You can start taking money for "services provided". "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

Doug, you are a wonder! And you're a brilliant soul that the simply enjoys being argumentative on the internet. So why don't you point him some where useful. He is a student with nine jumps. He is going to benifit way more from a hands on packing lesson from another experinced jumper. I would much rather see him learning this in person. How is this any different then telling a student to "ask your instructors" "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

There was another thread about this. No word yet about a retrofit, but I wouldn't get your hopes up. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

it isn't digital, but I bet a dz might help "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

Or what you do in reaction to it! "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

I have my hands on the rear risers, I use them to turn off the jump run to make sure I am not going to have any unpleasant suprises. I also make sure I am not running with the uppers at mach speed past the dz. I collapse my slider, wrap it up, and put it behind my head. Unstowing my brakes are the last thing I do. Once they are unstowed I give the canopy a control check. I think the most important part is making sure I am not flying up or down jump run, and I don't need my toggles for that. Why would you want to be flying around in full flight while you are screwing around with your swoop cords or booties? I doesn't make any sense to me. You can avoid with rears, and in the event of a collision course you will have more time with the brakes still set!! "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

Did you pound on your chest? If you didn't pound on your chest you need to go back and do it right. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

That is hilarious, and it is exactly how I felt New Years day!!! "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

I would 100%. You don't want to swoop. You say you want a flatter trimmed wing with good glide. The pilot has excellent glide in full flight, and it only gets better when you pull down the slider, open your chest strap, and play with the rear risers. It opens a little slower than I like, but the openings are very consistent. They are soft and tend to open on heading. It flat turns well given the right inputs, but it can also be a lot of fun when you push it. It has a good flare, and there is no problem shutting it down in no wind days. I also have had no problem shutting it down on an occasional intentional down winder. "The restraining order says you're only allowed to touch me in freefall" =P

Howard, thank you for posting this, and pointing me to the thread when I was at the DZ this weekend. Getting to read stories from the early days of jumping is a real pleasure.

Static Line twists / First freefall
