  1. Was one of the two Perris? I thought Parris had bann swooping? Both DZ's are now 90 turns only. This isn't a ban on swooping, it's just a ban on big turns. Sure...it keeps the swoops smaller, but that's the whole point. And even with 90's, people will still be severely injured or worse.
  2. They already are split off into comps yetthe comp results also feed the overall. You can look at individual comps. The comps do what they can to keep the playing field level as best as possible, which isn't entirely fair in the grand scheme (when talking about the potential for cheating the system).
  3. Because it's important to reduce cheating where possible. There are some folks out there that will do everything they can to cheat the system. Just because they can, doesn't mean that competitions should give up on quelling it where possible. Next comp, we have a much better way to deal with it, I think. You'll also be allowed to use your own FS.
  4. Please don't confuse "not encouraging by having a swoop pond" with "banning." Swooping is not banned at all, not at either dropzone you've mentioned. We've certainly gone a lot more than a couple of months without a swooping fatality. Banning swooping isn't the answer. Neither is "education." Some other undiscovered path will eventually out itself.
  5. outside or inside video? From instructor's POV or as third person/videographer? If it's inside, I use a .3. If I'm shooting much anything from the outside, I use a .5.
  6. Who told you the rig pulled "way over the limits?" I know who was in the room (and they're all on video). I'd appreciate a name. Only Craig, Scott, Meso or Tom can hide/delete posts. If you were to read the post above yours, it's pretty clear that Scott/LouDiamond removed the link and he explains why. Call off your dogs; it was explained, and you merely missed the explanation. You're welcome.
  7. That's a flat-out lie. [edit] to clarify based on a PM I've just received, I did not remove your link, Tony. I am not a moderator in the wingsuit forum and cannot remove/hide/delete/modify any post in this forum. For you to say the rig in Elsinore was "way over the limits on its own" is a lie. Who told you this? There were several people in the room, they all saw exactly what the video shows. None of them would lie about it. Can't you just admit an error was made and you're working/have worked to correct it? Seems simple enough.
  8. .., Just so I'm clear; you're saying Brian recommended you downsize to a 1:1.3 wingloading at 40 jumps?
  9. N3....battery life blows. I quit using it for that reason alone. The Viso will give a year + of battery life. N3, a weekend of active jumping. N3 allows you to put your own audio in, and it acts as an audible, which the Viso cannot do. I disagree with Scott about the menus being difficult; they're quite intuitive and not terribly different from the Optima or Altitrack. Having both, I prefer the VisoII. If nothing else, look at the threads (there are dozens) about customer service from L&B found here on DZ.com
  10. Landing in water zipped up, wearing rig and helmet isn't a downside, it's an upside. -suit will stay inflated for at least 5 mins. -Packed rig will act as a flotation device. -any water landing would involve crew close enough to quickly retrieve if things went south. All that said, i'm entirely confident Gary has considered these possibilities and dismissed them for one or another reason.
  11. You're just sayin' that because my Phantom rocks your Ghost :) Seriously, everything Stuu (and others) have said is what I'll echo. Learn to fly a smaller suit and the bigger suits are much, much easier. Learn on a bigger suit and you'll find you are missing out on a lot of skills that are best learned on a smaller suit. when you see tall, somewhat heavier guys like Joel Hindman kikkin' butt in his old, worn P2 against guys in much larger Sbirds, Rbirds, Ghosts, Stealth's....it is sweet to see. When he puts on the bigger suits, it translates very well.
  12. Excellent stuff!! Great to see more of these comps starting to happen around the world! Congrats to all the winners and participants.
  13. psssssttttt....there is nothing proprietary about the AVCHD codec...it's that Apple chooses to not directly support MPEG. Has zip to do with Sony, Panasonic, or Canon.... MP4 *is* AVC. All that said..iMovie can log/import. So can Premiere. Premiere will make your Mac operate video as though it were a PC running Vegas. Or put bootcamp on your Mac and run Windows on the other half and you can read any codec you want. Your Mac already has an AVCHD decoder built into the CPU; iMovie and Final Cut won't allow you access to it. Premiere uses it, and the Windows side of a Bootcamp install will access it too. No conversion, super fast. In short, any CX series will do great. Other than the lens and audio, the Hero 2 is a pretty decent little camera but IMO, it's ugly as hell for outside camera. And it doesn't zoom.
  14. Some fun pix of the new Rigging Innovations Curv, over Lake Elsinore.
  15. I have seen it, although it was three older suits, all well-worn, and all at least second (or more) hand. People are probably more aware of the problems now that they're being discussed more, and it's probably less of an issue... but its still prudent to have a general rule, IMO, so that there aren't discussions while engines are running on a busy DZ. [edit] They're not permitted at many large DZ's, including ours. However...if you're planning on BASE, and jumping a large wing, it's entirely a good thing to practice with a pouch from a balloon.
  16. Reach for the hackey by rolling your thumbs towards the bottom of the BOC. "Roll"/rotate your wrist so the palm goes from facing upwards to touching the bottom of your rig (more or less as pictured). This puts the grippers beneath your hands and allows you to slide your hands along the BOC to grasp the hackey/pud/PVC and deploy. This method is essentially the same whether it's a small suit or a big one.
  17. the warble seen in that vid isn't from the glasses moving; it's from a software or hardware gyro. Knowing the developers fairly well, they'll have this worked out prior to bringing them to market. The sunglass optics are very well done, UV etc. Angle of camera lens, encoding bitrate, and the gyro issue all need some tweaks, IMO.
  18. Sounds like the device is large? I like an experimental app that's on my droid that offers GR, voice commands for altitude, directional commands for when I'm backflying, and offers a flight path for post jump review. And it fits in my pocket. And doesn't cost a lot of $$
  19. Not Really. It is basically an exact copy of a PD reserve with the exception of the stabilizers the much needed, coated 725lb Spectra line. It is BTW, only manufactured at the CIMSA plant as they already had a QA program in place there. MEL Hey MEL, you raised my eyebrow with this one. Both in private conversation and at PIA, it seems most everyone feels that coated Spectra is much more prone to tension knots and that's why (PD, for example) builds reserves with uncoated microline. Is there some data or information that would support the 'much needed coating' preference? Second, are you suggesting that NZAerosports doesn't have a QC/QA program? I don't jump their canopies, but I have spent quite a bit of time in their booths at PIA and other events interviewing them, and it seems they've got a very solid process.
  20. We have a course at Skydive Elsinore, but I wouldn't say it's an always-active course. The course here deals with technical, safety, and flying skills over a 1.5 day period. Norman Kent offers a course in Deland, and I've heard someone offers a course at Spaceland.
  21. No. It is not a legal alternative.
  22. The quality will be superior to the CX100, simply because of the larger sensor, larger/greater glass, larger apertures. Compression is more or less the same
  23. They had the NX1000 at the NAB show, but I didn't get the opportunity to shoot anything with it. Form factor is really sweet.
  24. There is one slot left in the FFC course on Thursday night, starting at 6:00 p.m. Darren Burke, Joel Hindman, Tom van Dijck, and DSE are teaching the course. We'll jump the FFC's on Friday/Sat/Sunday, with preference paid to visiting skydivers. Contact manifest to sign up for that last slot. 15 people signed up thus far. See you thursday!
