  1. If speed is your need, and FCP is your workflow, avoid AVCHD. Simple answer.
  2. That would not be a headphone-related connection, although the size is right. Good guess though.
  3. Man... With a threat like that, I guess I'd better spill. See a model at the link The other option, is you could buy my new book on HD, in which I tell all. Except the book isn't shipping for 10 more days. Just don't threaten me anymore.
  4. Close. Oh so very close. I'm disappointed it's not here now. But it's so close. The beta units are very cool, features that skydivers asked for...and will benefit significantly from... Teasing is such fun.
  5. If you're using it for business purposes, you need a business policy. Gotta make a decision; is it a hobby, or is it a business? My camera gear is covered under my business, but my rigs are covered under homeowners.
  6. What is your end format? Web? DVD? DV tape? If it's for the web, you'll be best using someone else' export tools, Adobe's suck other than Flash. For DVD, it MUST be MPEG 2, no other alternative. Given the confusion for your file output, I'm wondering if you'd been selecting Uncompressed as your export/render format?
  7. I'm guessing that since you used really cheezy music, you also used the cheezy transitions on purpose? If your transitions are noticed, then they're inappropriate, is the general rule. Transitions that are longer than 7 frames are usually inappropriate as well. Some really great stuff in the vid, but man...I had to shut off the audio to watch it.
  8. Anything that reads a genuine MSPD should read the card just like an external drive. I've got several different sticks, all read correctly, some are Sandisk, others are sony. If you're using XP with SP1 or Vista, there should be nothing further to install.
  9. Yeah, but when most people hear "scripting" they think of something more like advanced macro recording. Personally, I love the power, but that power comes at the cost of more complexity and a steeper learning curve. I 'spose...I don't. I think of Apple script and custom coding, but there are probably those that think of FilmTools or Director as well (showing my age now).
  10. Looking at my situation, would you see the need to use the scripting feature? I mostly look for speed, so scripting is very important to me, but at the same time, I taught a videographer on our DZ to cut in MSPlatinum, and he was kickin' ass very fast with it. Once you have the concept of 10Key down, you can cut VERY fast in MSPlatinum. Honestly, I don't use scripts that often anymore for tandems, as once I'm rolling with two templates, I don't need them anymore. YMMV BTW, Dave...scripting is just VB.
  11. I believe it currently fails, yes. For me personally, if I want wingsuit instruction, I know who I'm going to, and I don't know if that person has a rating or not. I just know that they're very good. But for seeking an FFC, keeping in mind that there aren't a lot of wingsuiters in our area, I'm first looking for a person that has a rating, regardless of how he/she may achieve/obtain that rating. Sometimes I think many people forget that not everyone has access to Zhlls, Elsinore, or other large DZs filled with wingsuit instructors. To my knowledge, we only have a couple rated instructors in Utah for example, and only one at my local DZ. And he is the instructor I went to for my FFC. As have most WS folks in our area. I don't know if he received his BMI over a beer or over a training course, and I don't really care, he does a good job regardless of rating. But, he's also an AFFI, TI, etc. so he was qualified to teach before he rec'd his WS ratings. Until Birdman, Tony, and PF really get together on this concept however, it'll probably never receive the respect the rating deserves.
  12. Unfortunately, Movie Studio Platinum does not support scripting. You *can* use a template, and this is what a couple guys at our DZ do with MSPlatinum
  13. No, that's not my point. There is a point at which someone has skills that qualify them to instruct. Where that point is (I believe) cannot be qualified. Kallend talks about how he's exempt from having to certify for this or that, IMO, that's just as far off the mark. Time in sport does not equal experience, and does not grant the authority nor ability to teach. Skill, currency, etc all add up to those things, IMO. But...once that point is reached, there are more highly experienced people that may well not be able to teach, and significantly lesser experienced that are skilled, but are far more qualified to teach.
  14. Uhh...yeah. We actually are moving in that direction with our library, but until NAB is over...we're not there yet. It's very encouraging to see/hear from vidiots that they're interested in reducing the risk to themselves and their dropzone by moving away from copyrighted content.
  15. Nope...Vegas won't run on a Mac, unless you use Bootcamp. And no...fast GFX cards don't benefit *most* editing systems. Some NLE's have limited graphics acceleration for rendering, but nothing is optimized for the cards the way the games are.
  16. IMO, buying too soon can be a mistake. Buy used for your first rig, there are a LOT of bigger used rigs. You'll be surprised at how fast you'll outgrow a canopy. I thought I'd never want to go faster, etc... Everyone here told me "You'll eventually wanna go faster" and I said "Nah...not me." I was wrong.
  17. but...Norman is a pro. He understands that experience isn't gained for free, and highly experienced people who might be also considered "pro's" make the learning curve for him less steep. And therein, IMO, lies the value in a person who not only knows the subject, but also knows how to share it with others in a manner that helps them grow and arrive more quickly at the various points of their journey. I've had three wingsuit courses, and two of them followed similar roadmaps, although they each may have lingered longer at various points along the way. That said, just because someone is good at something doesn't mean they're able to teach others what they know. it's not uncommon to find someone with lesser knowledge be the better teacher, simply because they have an innate ability to teach.
  18. I just used half of a copper rivet, made for tack work/bridle for horses. http://www.eleathersupply.com/fasteners.shtml I just happened to have some of those lying around. Dunno if that sparks any inspiration or not?
  19. I live in a small rural community of fewer than 500 residents. I *think* the local church might hold 200 of them.
  20. Never forget... god has given man to do right or to do wrong...CHOICE.. and judge not lest ye be judged. You should choose to go with a company that CHOOSES to not be hypocritical about the teachings in the book. You can judge the hard core types to not be following their own teachings.. case closed. You entirely missed the point. For 7 years, this company did not judge our products. Due to change in ownership, we now are faced with at least 8500.00 in losses due to THEIR change of face, not ours. Just because *they* got religion should not mean that my business has to suffer as a result. In this particular case, their conversion is likely going to end them up in court, as we're not the only client they've forced to comply with their new-found godliness. I realize that if you don't own a business, the cost of moving dozens of palettes of product isn't easily comprehensible. I also realize that the inconvenience is seemingly small. But it's not. And it's not a cost I should have to bear simply because "they found God." "Finding God" needs to carry it's own responsibilities and weight.
  21. I dunno...I kind of appreciate the guy that comes to the door with steaks, and I appreciate the guy that comes from Swanns (they have the cool little mini-corn dogs that I really like). What I don't appreciate is the JW's, the Mormons, and the BA's that come by. Had one just yesterday, she was trying to sell me a load of stupid (claiming the earth was only 5000 years old). It's not nearly as angering as it is amusing, but eventually the humor wears off and disgust set in. Disgust turns to anger. Different side of the discussion; our fulfillment partner of 7 years was recently bought out by a very fucked-up parent company that is hard-core Xtian. They informed us they could no longer fulfill a book we publish on the art of film-making, because: A-the book has the word "fuck" in it as part of a descriptive script dialog. B-There is a DVD in the back of the book that contains a highly suggestive, although not nude, sex scene. Therefore, we had to find a new fulfillment house, pay for shipping of 10k books to a new fulfillment house, and now decide we need to do with the remaining 90 products we have in fulfillment that *do* meet their standards.
  22. If you know Premiere, you know FCP. If you know FCP, then you know Premiere. They're not terribly different, and both were initially coded by the same team, both attempt to emulate Avid (which is why I'm not a fan of either, but use both when forced to). One thing I love about FCP, it increases our billable hours by a fair amount, so if a client requests we work in FCP, we do so very gladly. If we're on a flat fee schedule and the client doesn't request or has no say...we would never use FCP or Premiere.
  23. Depends on the licensing, some are per copy, others are per broadcast, still others are a combination of how many are copied, where it's broadcast, etc. It can get confusing. In the case of the VASST tools and the Digital Juice content, once you've paid for it, there are zero restrictions of any kind, outside of giving your buddy a copy for his own use. In other words, use to your heart's content for tandem videos, just don't buy one disc and then make copies for every tandem video editor you know. The DJ action sports library is good stuff for starters.
  24. A- it's not 520 lines, that's marketing. B-even if it were, DV accepts a maximum of 240 lines (120 red, 120 blue) C-Camera isn't matched to electronics, so the A to D is fairly poor. Many here edit with Sony Vegas, several edit with Premiere, and a few are FCP users.
  25. I guess I live in a different world. For every SteveOrino, there are thousands of Pat Robertsons. Were there "thousands of SteveOrinos for every one Pat Robertson," this discussion likely wouldn't be taking place at all. Who has experienced an atheist knocking on their door to tell them how miserable their life is and how badly they need a non-belief system? Contrasted by at least once a month, a missionary from one theist religion or another knocks at our door.
