  1. http://www.spottedeagle.com/Skydive/CES08/IMG_0047.jpg shows the image I was referring to. http://www.spottedeagle.com/Skydive/CES_cameras.html Has some other stuff relevant.
  2. It's possible that it's the fans, but I'm betting more on the internal stabilization system. In another thread back in January, I posted images of this camera with the message "Camera is moving too fast" on the screen. The internal stabilization system shuts down if the encoder can't process the moving information well enough. This camera is Panasonic's second camera in the MPEG world, and they're not known for their MPEG encoding....They've always been an Intra-frame developer. MPEG is Inter-frame.
  3. Yes, someone does.[;) You'll see an announcement page here soon.
  4. Virtually all of the camcorders are on 12 hour clocks, which means you're resetting any custom parameters (focus) every 12 hours. So...if you jump in the never-ending-sun regions, you might be doing this twice a day! BTW, there is a great training DVD available for the camera....
  5. Actually, today's displays are generally set to a lower-than-historically average due to the effect of increased saturation with a lower luma value. Think something along the lines of an underexposed shot allows colors to saturate better.... While your ideas may work, having all these different settings for different viewing experiences seems silly and is definitely an impediment to the creative process vs the movie viewing process, vs an efficient workflow each time the schizophrenic monitor is powered up with a variety of profiles. "Am I set to a res of 1080 today? Or am I 720? How bright am I? How accurate am I going to be with all these changing settings?" How far back should I sit for this vs that? For photoshop I want this resolution and for video editing on a secondary video card (assuming Vegas), I need that resolution and color space and calibration. "Schizophrenic" doesn't quite cover it. If you're using the device as a secondary monitor for video editing (making some assumptions here), there are some VERY specific settings, recommendations that you'll want to observe. Using the industry-recommended distances for monitors larger than 19" is a good plan, IMO. Eyestrain can be painful, and usually has residual result for up to several days. It's true there are no federal regulations regarding monitor distances, but OSHA and the manufacturers generally agree. It's no different than BSRs existing in areas that FARs may not directly apply. They're there for good reason, and generally are a good idea to follow. Reading (what I feel is) silliness about monitor distances for this activity and that luminance settings for that activity may somewhat easily be translated to recommending that someone with 200 jumps might manage a wingloading of 1.7 "if they do this or that." then again, some users might not mind changing profiles for every unique input and display use. I know I would mind (and do).
  6. Ross LeBaron's sons have stepped forward with DNA evidence that their father has fathered four children with their sister, and it is believed/purported that one of their brothers fathered the sister's fifth child. Local news interviewed 3 of the brothers about why their father is having sex with the sisters. Father wouldn't comment on television of course, but their eldest brother talked about "inter-sexual relations for purifying the seed is beneficial to select families and situations. However, it is a private matter."
  7. I'm a fan of tape for similar reasons. We've been entirely tapeless in our production workflow for nearly 3 years (although some of our work is backed to tape simultaneously with HDD), and it's a great workflow in a controlled environment. Skydiving is anything but controlled. Al of my content is backed up on a drive, and I can recall whatever jump from whatever day in whatever year. But...that takes a computer to recall. Tape has some solid advantages, no doubt. If anyone is interested in my "Tapeless Workflow" PowerPoint, PM me with a regular email addy, as it's quite large. It asks as many questions as it answers.
  8. And the Key to knowledge is learning. Welcome to the forum
  9. How are you physically getting them the video? Transferring over a wireless network from one computer to another? Dave Hadn't considered that option, but it sure would work. Nope...old-fashioned sneaker-net. USB 2 card reader.
  10. EIS=Electronic Image Stabilization OIS=Optical Image Stabilization For stills, you won't be worrying about this feature in the air.
  11. Find me a rescue in Utah for Bengals that doesn't want identical cost for a cat, and I'll be there tomorrow. There isn't one. So, I can spend 1k flying somewhere to rescue a Bengal from a group/home, have zero guarantee about the cat's health and background, or I can drive to one of four world-renowned breeders in my area, and buy a spayed/neutered cat of my choice whom I get to observe over time before bringing it home for about $500.00. I have no interest in breeding, and breeders require that to keep the line pure, they neuter or spay the kitten before delivery. If you want a breeder-grade kitten, you pay 3-4 times the amount of a non-breedable. If a rescue was convenient, less costly, and as guaranteed as a breeder-bought animal, I'd look at a rescue cat. But pitting 1K of unknown temperment vs half that cost and a reasonably assumed temperment...I'll take the lower risk. I suspect most folks would, if they were in my situation. Not everyone lives near densely populated areas that offers a lot of choices.
  12. If you're looking for an excuse to buy a new helmet, hell...toss that sucker (my way, please). Get a new camera. Is 211.00 worth the difference between the time spent looking for a new setup, building it, and dealing with changing your workflow? If not...get it fixed. The repair centers in Austin and San Diego are terrific, IMO. There are other cams that are close to the same as the HC42 as well, but off the top of my head, I can't remember which cams are the same form factor. Maybe you can find a used on on eBay? Other than tearing it apart yourself, seems like repair is the best option. Members on the CreativeCOW.net have recommended opening the body, blowing it out with compressed air, and reassembling, and the three posters there have all claimed it worked well.
  13. Boy...we see this differently. Firewire to 3 friends on the DZ-3-4 mins per friend per jump. HDD to 3-4 friends on the DZ-less than 20 seconds each, or on my particular system, I can burn 2 DVDs at once. Better still, my memcard to your laptop. Year end...hand the guy a hard drive with my preferred regions already marked out. Oh yeah...I'm the guy that does the year end, so I'd rather have files than tapes, so I don't have to capture or hand-review. All that said, I happen to jump both card and tape. Each has its place, and moreover, I'm mostly experimenting to decide what I want to do for the remainder of the year.
  14. I jump with one fairly regularly. I'm mostly a belly jumper, so IS isn't an issue for me with either OIS or EIS. I have done some sit with it, but given the smoothness of my sit, can't tell you which is the cam and which is me.
  15. Hmmm...I wonder if black people are scared to express how they feel about white people's attitudes. Probably are. Kinda like the guy at Southwest Airlines that was handed a noose a day or two ago. Indigenous people are scared to express their feelings towards white attitudes too. It might mean loss of jobs. So Rush is right. It's about money. Asian people don't dare, nor do Hispanics dare to express their feelings at an individual level either. Interestingly though, Hispanics, Blacks, Indigenous, Asians aren't afraid to express their feelings toward the attitudes of non-whites. I wonder why?
  16. This subject has been discussed to death?
  17. It's an MPEG camcorder; some NLE's can't support it. Limited functionality, but that may not be a concern to you. At a cost of less than 500.00 and tapeless workflow, it might work well for you if HD imaging isn't necessary. Superlight, that's a big plus. Native 4:3, so it's not gonna give you widescreen. It really boils down to what you want to do...if it's for tandems and you're not competing with others that have intra-frame cams (DV) or HD cam systems, it's a viable option. If you're just looking for a fun freefly cam, I'd say it's a very good option if the price is right. But as Saskia said, it's not Sony.....so longevity isn't on its side.
  18. Just another version of the other low-bitrate, small-sensor cams. I have one. It's a POS, IMO, but I'm a snob. The quality you see on their website is pretty much the quality it outputs, even though the web is highly compressed. For screwing around with friends and shooting for nothing that matters, it's a good value. If you plan on making a DVD with it....it's filled with macro blocking and won't look half good on any monitor larger than 20". Nice for web-based delivery. The macroblocking you see in this stream is what the camera delivers. They're not compression artifacts from YouTube. If they dont' bother you, the only other aspect (IMO) is that it's a nasty snag-hazard.
  19. Don't you feel speshul? Monkeyboy did the same to me, too. We'll have to plot carefully. I've seen him stop heavy equipment with just one hand.
  20. We have FINALLY determined our winners, yes. Sangiro gets to announce them. I apologize for the delay. One of the judges took ill and was late to the party, and we had some seriously close vids in the contest. It wasn't clear-cut.
  21. Rush, you equally distorted the point I've tried to make; I'm merely responding to your tactic in a like manner. You completely dismissed my game analogy, how is it that it doesn't apply? You claim a level playing field shouldn't matter? I say the first three quarters of the game are very significant to the expected outcome in the fourth. I haven't heard anyone suggest "living in the past." Using the past as a foundation to understand progress is a different topic. However, if you're expecting a generation or two to entirely turn around 200 years of programming....
  22. In a word? No. But I can tell you it is not level where I work either. And I am not the one getting the benifit. My point more than anything else is, if you want an excuse, you can find one. Will any field ever be level? Is life fair? (remember that one?) Only you (self) can decide if you need to find an excuse or, over come the bs. The video was bs. Obamas speach was bs and that is supported by what he did today. Anyone can play the victim. The black community has a few brave souls who have pointed this out (Cosby is one of them) and they get attacked. Why, cause Faracon and Jackson make money with thier victims. Anybody, playing a victim only suceeds in giving themselves the excuse to (fill in the blank) And that in not just blacks.... Well heck, if a black man (Bill Cosby) points out that his people have problems, then damn! He MUST be absolutely right because HE did it, and HE is black, and HE can see the problems of black America even from his ivory tower (formerly the highest-paid entertainer in the US). Ouch, my cheek hurts. So...We'll play basketball. Let's tilt the court in my direction so that to score the same basket, your team has to run uphill for every one of their goals. While we're at it, we'll put hobbles on your team as well. We'll leave the hobbles in place and the court tilted for all but the last 5 minutes of the game. I'm sure that you won't mind when after the game I'm standing in front of the world saying "The court is flat, they had the same opportunity to win as I did. Your perspective is that all people of color choose to be victims. A-that has nothing to do with this video B-it's incorrect C-Even with all the incentives the government provides on the surface, does that mean they really work anyway? If so, why aren't there high numbers of non-whites running around the USA, in any percentage of high office or community representation? it sure isn't because anyone is stupid or incapable.... BTW, it's "Farrakhan." And he's a caricature. Just like Bill Cosby. Just like Bill O'Reilly, just like Jon Stewart. They're role-playing. If you buy into one of them, you have to buy into all of them, IMO. They're all equally disconnected from the people they purport to represent. You don't think Bill Cosby makes money from his color and his words? I agree, there are lots of excuses. On BOTH sides.
  23. Isn't it always about perspective? Aren't our perspectives are borne from our experiences? Our experiences are wildly varied. What two people take from the exact same experience may tremendously vary depending on their perspectives going into the experience, based on unrelated past experiences. And in a back-handed way, that's part of what I get from the message. As five-fingered humans, we're all the same. Beyond that, we're as different as all the colors of the universe and if we can't learn to accept those differences, even revel in them, what the hell are we here for? Everything that exists in the world today exists because someone wasn't OK with status quo or where they were going. If we all thought the same about everything, what a horrible place this life would be. RushMC, do you feel the playing field for non-whites has been level for the past....40 years? Not even a full generation. Has the playing field been level? Is it level now?
  24. From your perspective, anyway. Curious as to where you might live, geographically?
  25. Tell that to David Leavitt. Or Mark Shurtleff. Or for that matter, to Rulon Allred, Ervil LeBaron, Martin Pingree....The first two have prosecuted polygamy at the fundamental level, the others are polygs that were prosecuted. They all publically refer to the women with whom they've had "spiritual marriages" as their "wives." With or without paperwork. IIRC, Green had no "church," licensed, nor state-aware marriage to wives four and five, yet they were included in the counts of bigamy. I'm not a lawyer, so the intricacies of arguing what is what are the specifics are beyond what I know. It's a subject I have fun with, however. Our attorney general has a passion for skydiving, and one of our regular skydivers is a son of a large polyg family. Our old DZ is right in the middle of a very large group of polys (Cedar Valley, Utah).
