  1. looking forward to seeing the docked forward loops n' similar.
  2. I doubt any Mormon would care. Have a conversation about burning garments, however...you'd likely get a different response (locally).
  3. You may have spooked them, too. A good practice is to look at the airport aerial and plan your flight path based on that. Share it with others. This not only sets you up with a plan, but it demonstrates you're thinking about your skydive prior to boarding. It'll also help you set the stage for other disciplines once you've got more experience. Learn to track both right/left patterns. You'd be surprised at how many people can't go to the right (under the plane in many instances) while maintaining stability and heading.
  4. Yes, it's in theory possible. Either way, you have your answer. Student mode is for students. But being aware is significantly more reliable and practicle than audible or AAD.
  5. first, I agree in that someone with more jumps is likely to be a better base than someone with 100 jumps. That said, I've also seen people with 3000 jumps unable to fly relative on their bellies due to a historical focus on freeflying. I consider camera flying to be different because not only do you have a focus on another person(s) but also on a device, an angle of attack, technology, and in many cases pull altitudes are different in either direction. Loss of altitude awareness carries a greater potential, IMO. That's not to say Coaches don't screw up too. I have a photo of a coach jump where a new coach was wearing a camera and lost altitude awareness. Both student and coach ended up with 2 out. I also have a photo during the SOS jumps last year where 4 people had two outs, all highly experienced skydivers on the same load. It happens on both ends.
  6. While I agree with what you've written, I've always wondered at the USPA logic that determines it's unsafe for a jumper with fewer than 200 jumps to jump with a camera (I agree with this), but perfectly ok for someone with 100 jumps to take on the responsibilty to jump with a novice / student. Why do you feel they're related? They're very different kinds of jumps requiring entirely different skill sets.

I don't know that I'd agree it's a marketing gimmick. Fad? Perhaps. Keep in mind that it does cost a LOT more to acquire 3D (assuming it's done properly). The only aspect of the process that's the similar is editing, and even editing requires additional thought in how long shots are held, how much of the effect to pass depending on the distance from the subject, etc. Beam splitters are not easy/cheap to work with and maintenance of the gear is more costly. yet, at the end of the day the public likely won't pay much more for the end product unless 3D significantly enhances their experience. There are only so many dollars in a family entertainment budget. We'll just have to see what the porn market does. They drove VHS and the internet....maybe it'll drive 3D, too (the industry is already in the 3D space).

  10. Sometimes I wish DZ.com had a "like" button. Nice pic.
  11. Me too. My fave is "18 and Life" but Agent Lead knew that a couple years ago. :-) Team Alliance reminds me of early Onyx in some places.
  12. Nice pages, Bill. Very few use the T2i for filmmaking; the lack of live output over HDMI makes it a non-starter for most. I can't see skydivers using this for vid much either, but the format DOES have some nice abilities. If you don't mind, I'm going to post your link to the DSLR filmmakers group?
  13. Hmmm...that's tough. Most memorable; Jumping with the space shuttle, Island and Purple Mike, Scotty Burns. That ended up on the cover of USA Today and won Scotty the USA Today Photo of the Year (readers award). Most intimidating; Imagine damaging the pres of USPA in his first wingsuit skydive? Most rewarding; Every successful AFF and wingsuit FFC jump. The best recent was a kid named Andy at Couch Freaks. He was flyin' like a pro on his first jump and beaming like a gap-toothed 6 year old on Christmas morning.
  14. I wonder if you're confusing the coach rating with "coaching?" A 150 jump wonder who has a Coach Rating primarily jumps with people fresh off AFF and in the ISP or journey towards their A license. You're well past that. You might want advanced coaching in say....Canopy Control, Wingsuiting, Freeflying....; these are not disciplines that 150 jump Coaches are trained nor prepared to deal with. For example, if one wishes to be a Phoenix-fly Wingsuit Coach, then one must first possess a USPA Coach rating. This lets PF know you've jumped through the hoops of learning to teach. However, that 150 jump Coach doesn't yet possess the experience nor skillset to teach wingsuit First Flight Courses.

I can't either. Active Shutter shades...250.00 Room has to be "right" for the IR to work. Passive lenses...cheap but half resolution/less effective. Autostereoscopic has an exceptionally narrow field of view, so you get pulled into the picture, but if you lay your head on your SO's shoulder...you're back out. do you take your shades off when you get up to grab a beer? Cuz you're probably gonna trip on the coffee table if you don't. Do you buy 6 pair of shades for the fam? What about when your buddies come over to watch the game in 3D? BluPrint plus encoder plus Zplane-80K$...shelf authoring ain't happening for a long while. But at IBC...the manufacturers have got everyone here convinced that 3D is the next gold rush. I feel like a fish swimming upstream.
  16. Um yes and that is kinda the point for my needs. Lets say you want a supped up King Air with monster engines completely stripped inside for maximum lift capacity. It may have been designed to smuggle drugs but as a skydiver, you would buy it for a jump ship. The same analogy goes for my media player. I want Divx, Divx Plus, MKV, Region free, BluRay etc but oh my God, ) No...You'd be buying that aircraft to still smuggle drugs. If you're good with theft...cool. Just call it what it is. I use a PS3. Been considering using Windows, but havent had the motivation to finish what I'd need to make it all synced up.
  17. ----------------- Like anything else in this world of people, there are good coaches and bad ones. There are those motivated to be the best they can be and help others do the same, and those motivated by free jumps and paychecks. The "light bulb turning on" and "the smile" are the best paychecks I can imagine. Someone who loves to teach can make that happen regardless of jump numbers.

    3D curious

Some of the folks here play with 3D, many are curious, and others couldn't care less. I'd like to understand more about what motivates folks here to want to do 3D, and what prevents others from caring. I'm at the IBC in Amsterdam, and everywhere I turn, it's 3D. Curious as to whether this particular community thinks it's a fad or the next evolution in media.
  19. formatted in an AVCHD camcorder? Remember the camcorder writes the index file as part of the format process. Formatting in a computer is a different deal. That said, I haven't had to recover data from any MSPD cards formatted in-camera, either. I'm not sure I'm correct in believing it isn't possible.
  20. True... It takes roughly 12x longer How come OLED isn't in the poll?
  21. It doesn't. And it's silly for someone to think otherwise. Good teachers are those that exhibit a passion and a love for whatever they're teaching. That passion and love doesn't come from jump numbers, but there will always be people who think otherwise.
  22. Gee...and I set up the macro to repeatedly vote.
  23. Plasmas also can suffer burn-in (where a static image burns itself into the screen). Ever walk into a hotel room where it appears a CRT TV is on, even though it's off? That's burn-in. LCD does not suffer this issue, and while there are some image quality tradeoffs the noise, heat, (due to altitude here) and burn-in got me to go for LCD panels for home and office.
