I'm a big fan of em'. Since I have a lot of wingsuit students, I have 3 different chest and mudflap alti's. Monkey/Sean Horton makes a nice mudflap mount that isn't painful to fall on. Mine is made from LookMa.de Folds up when packing or lineup and is holding an L&B Altitrack. Bigger pillows are preferred, IMO, for most cheststrap mounts. The small ones mostly just fold over.

I feel this is a good tool to have as a reference. Matt Veno did the calculations, and it's pretty simple to comprehend. For wingsuits, it's quite valuable.

Ridestrong, I think you're missing the point due to all the rhetoric... Yes, anything in skydiving can kill you. but taking one thing at a time, and going back to the basics for each thing new...that's a conservative, thoughtful approach. Like...for your first wingsuit jump. Taking off the iPod, removing the camera, stepping back to the basics. Mastering the wing, then putting the camera back on. I didn't wear a camera on a wingsuit jump til I had around 100 wingsuit jumps. Too conservative? Perhaps. I didn't wear a still until after I had around 100 video jumps. Too conservative? Perhaps. I added a ringsight around 30 video camera jumps. Maybe too conservative, maybe not. Point being...one thing at a time, and when you go into something new, step back to the most basic means of doing that new thing. It's just common sense, but unfortunately common sense isn't so common. I wish I'd realized you were who you are in Moab. Would have enjoyed spending a few mins chatting.

That's because you and I are such diplomats. (Assuming you're talking about two of the birds we took up at Moab). And it was cool; we explained our reasons (one thing at a time, not being able to catch anything anyway, distraction factor) and they accepted the reasoning behind it. Obviously I'm opposed to cameras on any "firsts" but it seems we're in the minority.

I'd say Bill has been pretty patient; the first time I came to Lodi to jump on my own, he gave me a reminder "be sure to land on the DZ." That was several years ago. Any chance he might change his mind? Can we as a community help somehow?

I think in the Photo forum you'd find a LOT of people who would disagree with this statement, including myself. Assuming that larger=greater snag potential is a mistake.

Over this past weekend, I observed several new wingsuiters wearing cameras for their first flights. Cameras were mostly small format, two were bigger/dedicated camera rigs. One was a mudflap mount. From the perspective of an "instructor" (really a coach at this point), do you allow "students" to wear cameras when coaching them into a new discipline (whether it's CRW, Wingsuiting, FF, etc)? Reasons for, ideas opposed please?

I'd bet that over the years, he's seen more titties than a 16 year old who found his dad's Penthouse stash when he was 12. If what Avery says is correct, I surely hope it can be reconsidered, and surely hope it does not generate a ripple.

I don't know the answer to your question, I wasn't there. However; *generally* speaking, when one spends the money on a bigger/real camera and helmet setup, they also consider snag points, angles, etc. and I believe this minimizes much of the risk. Being able to effectively walk into a grocery store, buy a camera with sticky tape and put it on a helmet changes the game quite a bit vs the person who has thought about which helmet, which camera, cage, control system, mounting device, and the cost factor has them talking to others about what they're doing. Half the small format cameras I see are "sneaked" on to jumps. This past weekend I was at a boogie and saw several 200 jump guys putting on a camera and a wingsuit for the first time, or wingsuit for first time and using their GoPro. One guy says "I don't want to put the mudflap altimeter mount there because that's where my GoPro goes." One guy... I commented "Gee, you get to wear a camera on your first wingsuit jump? I didn't." In other words, i think it's entirely a different mindset than the person putting on a "real" camera setup vs a blisterpack sticky mount.

A small-format camera is the primary cause of a fatality in the BASE world. Although it's not a skydive, it *is* relevant. Next we're gonna hear from a defender about how subterminal speed, larger PC, bridle length, or some other factor played a big role too. Bottom line (for me) is this; -Someone died due to a bridle entangled with a small camera on their head, and the deceased was apparently very, very experienced as both a skydiver and base jumper. Other factors probably did contribute, Are you certain you've got the experience and know-how to cope with them when/if they show up on your jump? Be safe out there ############### 29 September 2010 | 01:16:37 PM | Source: AAP An Australian woman who died BASE jumping in Malaysia got her parachute tangled around a helmet-mounted camera and only managed to free it at the last second. Stunned onlookers could only watch in horror as Kylie "Buffy" Tanti from Pheasants Nest, in the NSW Southern Highlands, plunged to her death on Tuesday. She had jumped off Malaysia's second tallest building, the 165.5 metre Alor Setar tower, in Alor Setar, northwestern Malaysia, as part of a training session. A friend of Ms Tanti's said her pilot parachute, designed to catch the air and yank out her main parachute, got caught around the camera. "She managed to clear this but it was too late," Gary Cunningham, spokesman for the Australian BASE Association told AAP on Wednesday http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/1366716/latest-from-wire/

Gabe, after Chicks Rock, I'll have a P2 for you to try, I think. I do have both brands if you wanted to try em' both side by side. You'd have to come north for that, however... (if you want to come after CR, that's fine...I'm wintering in Elsinore) Based on the body type you've indicated you have, I suspect you'll really like the acrobatic and speed qualities of the P2, but you do NEED TO FLY multiple suits so you know what you like, IMO.

What's really unique about this particular vid is that no slow mo nor fast mo (timewarp) has been added. What you see is real, and that's pretty rare in this sort of video. Smokin' fast in some scenes, yeah?
-
Funny...just this morning I told someone that the video was merely a rumor. Kinda thot Robi, Jarno, and Boris were gonna keep it a secret til this weekend.

haven't seen your issue, but the only dark place I use the GoPro is inside the aircraft and it's always blurred, as expected. Small sensors, not terribly intelligent processing, slower shutter...Blur would be anticipated, IMO. Great that GoPro looked at it. They seem to offer very good customer service.

I use one, as do all the systems at Elsinore and a few other DZ's. They are handy for reminders about shortcuts, but they *are* just a regular keyboard. More expensive, but better quality with jog shuttle and other features are the Bella USA keyboards. I'm on my BB, please forgive the lack of a link.

no, please don't install any more codec packs. They're often more messy than they're worth. Uninstall Vegas. Reinstall Vegas. that should fix your problem.
-
Can you shoot 10 seconds of video and send to me via FTP? I'll stick it in VMS10 and see what's up. I'd hazard a guess that something has jacked your video/audio codecs. DId you install Klite, buy any chance? Next step try reinstalling VMS

Millertime24 brought this up a coupla months ago, we had a conversation and we both kinda walked away feeling like it's a waste of time.

Days are over, time to move on to Chicks Rock. the event went without any wingsuit hitches that I'm aware of; lots of first flights from all comers, I think. Monkey was a HUGE help in putting out several of the later students; had some great ones. Once again, I took the distance record for off-landings, I think. Sunset jump was gorgeous with Bettye LaVette and "Wish You Were Here" in my ear. Amazing how this place "feels" even tho I live here. Was great to see Zach, Kallend, Island Mike, Paul, Stefan, Tom, Simon, Monkey, and a bunch of other faces that seem to usually be on the "coasts." If you weren't here this year, you should try to plan for next.

We are not sucking in Moab; lots of wingsuiters here. Jeff and Taya are organizing some groups, Monkey and I have been putting out First Flight Students and some small groups. 11 FFC's so far from the PF contingent; most of em' have done really well. Weather is gorgeous, wish y'all were here. Not taking a lot of pix, but a few here and there, watch for em' once the event is over.

Soon's I have my helmet, I'll review it. Then again, I'm a LOUSY freeflier. there are quite a few that do fly top-mount, the helmet is angled just for that as well.

Sony has an upgrade path; I just don't know the cost. But it *is* significantly less costly to upgrade from Pro9 to Pro10. Available in about 15 more days.

Be sure you have DVD Architect installed; it installs the AC3 decoder needed for MP4 video.

A disturbing PM I recieved...bad advice???
DSE replied to discovery4's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
That's a 5K investment in being competent enough to hopefully not harm an unsuspecting 3rd party. Did you get into skydiving to make money or have fun? Paid jumps are fun too, but would you want your mom in a tandem with a low-timer across from her?
