I did my first jump in 1991...and have remained active every since. So... That makes me an old timer by your standard, and yes, I too have witnessed dumbasses along the way - to include swoopers with blinders. I do not disagree with the end, just the means. Our society is legislated to the point of paralysis. I like to dream the dream that skydivers can police themselves. It's worked at every DZ I 've jumped at. I have horrible ankles. Hangwag's are fine if you're not walking around too much. They just don't breath worth a damn. After 16 years of military jumping, skydiving, and more recently BASE, my favorites are $20 Wal-Mart hiking boots (that's what I'm wearing in the avitar). The reason DZOs have to do what is right for them is the lawyers slick. Whether or not the swooper is the type to sue, eventually a very smooth lawyer will convince one to. Or the surviving family. Lawyers were all over the place when Blondie had her accident looking to sue someone related to the jump operation or the land it is leased on. We just told them to fuck off. Surviving family members of a dead swooper or someone that swooper killed may not be so adamant about accepting the results of their chosen sport.
