Thanks for the info, that's kind of what I was thinking. "If it wasn't easy stupid people couldn't do it", Duane. My momma said I could be anything I wanted when I grew up, so I became an a$$hole.

Does anyone know what temperature structural steel melts at and how hot jet A will burn? I've seen exit temps at one of our presses of 1100 degrees and still be a solid but just barely. I'm guessing the aluminum alloys are going to have different melting points, but we throw 1,200 degrees around as a general rule of thumb for our 6,000 series alloys. I was thinking cast iron melts at around 4,500 degrees, but you can burn steel much lower, like around 1,500 ish. Oxy acetylene torches run about 5,600 degrees, but I can't see jet fuel burning that hot in open air. Do the airlines carry compressed oxygen on board that may have been fanning the flames so to speak? The earth would eventually pull the heat away from the puddle but no where near as fast as if it was in open air. The rocks would take a while to heat up initially but when they did get hot they would help keep the metal hot. Since the pools were completely covered they would be pretty well insulated. The mods keep deleting them, it was probably because he was attacking my profile info in the Incidents forum. I'm slow, but I learned, he didn't. It was fun while it lasted . I was having fun with John Rich for the past couple days, until he blocked me from PM'ing him. I think he could use some more friends , not personal attacks or anything like that, but someone to keep him company. "If it wasn't easy stupid people couldn't do it", Duane. I'm just curious as to how many people have seen red or orange liquid aluminum. Sure it will burn bright orange, but when I've seen it that color it's still a solid. I'm not really buying the conspiracy stories yet. I'm not an expert by any means, but I do work in an aluminum extrusion plant, and I weld aluminum. Line Twist, Spinning Mal, & Wingloading
gearless_chris replied to Megatron's topic in Safety and Training
The only time I had to use both hands to cutaway was on my 215 Monarch loaded at 1.1, it was a brake fire. All you have to do is get the risers uneven with linetwists and you're going to have some problems. "If it wasn't easy stupid people couldn't do it", Duane. What is there to do at 4:51 in the morning?

Maybe you should find a map of Sebastian to study . I was wondering if you were actually up all night too, or if you were just passed out. "If it wasn't easy stupid people couldn't do it", Duane. My momma said I could be anything I wanted when I grew up, so I became an a$$hole. -
I've made the mistake of pulling on level with people before. I definitely picked up speed from the time I threw until the canopy started inflating. I dropped a good 40 feet, just like tandems do when they release the drogue. Just imagine what kind of crap poor Ryan would catch if he was jumping without a Cypress. It amazes me that people wouldn't jump a rig without one, or without a RSL. 4 out of my 5 cutaways are without a RSL, I almost got to use my Skyhook but the canopy would've landed in a corn field that was being harvested and I didn't know if I could find it in time. It wasn't a horrible mal, just a broken steering line. I have around 40 all rear riser landings so I wasn't that concerned, I just hadn't landed this canopy on rears yet. If my old rig had a RSL I would have it hooked up. "If it wasn't easy stupid people couldn't do it", Duane. My momma said I could be anything I wanted when I grew up, so I became an a$$hole.

Love You Bunches! Merry Christmas/Happy New Year!

Hahahaha..I've been in an International (8gear), Freightliner (a 10 and 8 gear) and now a Volvo (10 gear)....and I'm a "Gear CRAMMER" Just when I get used to one, it's time to shift to another. Well at least you're using all the gears. My teachers in college used to whine all the time about drivers skipping the two speed rear axle and breaking stuff in the process. They had all kinds of cool broken stuff to show us. It's amazing that the most likely time to break an axle is when hooking up a trailer. "If it wasn't easy stupid people couldn't do it", Duane. What is this canopy? #10
gearless_chris replied to howardwhite's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
It was invented by hippies in the military. It was to produce a peace sign shadow on the ground so the enemy would feel good and quit fighting. Actually I don't have the slightest idea, don't mind me, I'm just passing through. "If it wasn't easy stupid people couldn't do it", Duane. I was originally going to get a Vigil instead of a Cypress2, but the Vigil wasn't water resistant and the Vigil 2's weren't out yet, so Cypress won. Just in case someday I end up swooping ponds. I'm kind of glad because I would probably be one of the people that would end up with my AAD in student mode and it would definitely fire under canopy if it was. It is good to hear that if I end up at the level that I would need a speed Cypress I can get it changed. I don't see that happening but you never know. Wait! You sell those containers!? I wish I would have known about you guys and those sweet containers back when I started before I ordered my container. I thought mine was cool until I saw yours. I think yours is cooler, even if you don't. "If it wasn't easy stupid people couldn't do it", Duane. My momma said I could be anything I wanted when I grew up, so I became an a$$hole.

I didnt want to post until today...I QUIT!
gearless_chris replied to floridadiver81's topic in The Bonfire
I thought the first few days was pretty easy, it wasn't until about day four that it hit me. What I find odd is that sometimes the smell of smoking makes me sick to my stomach, and sometimes I still want to smoke too. I quit 7 years ago, and I still get urges sometimes. One of my DZO's/riggers says you really only need to do three things, clear the lines, stow the brakes, keep the lines in the center. He's never had a cutaway so I believe him, and he's packed in the front seat of his van. He also watched most of the jumps of that guy in Indiana that made 50 jumps on his 50th birthday. He made his first jump like normal. The other 49 were with the canopy in a paper grocery bag. He set his brakes, did his line check, and placed everything in the bag neatly in order. He would jump out and throw the bag. "If it wasn't easy stupid people couldn't do it", Duane. My momma said I could be anything I wanted when I grew up, so I became an a$$hole.

It's almost funny that they want to disconnect the RSL for safety (so they can get stable before pulling the reserve), then they stow the shackle on the big ring so it doesn't flop around, and create a situation where you may not want an RSL (one riser not releasing). My only concern with the RSL is my 3 ring getting stuck on the non-RSL side so it won't release. When my Monarch blew up the right rear slider grommet went past the 3 ring and was on the right front riser. At some point it went over the 3 ring assembly. I wonder what would've happened if it had stopped at the 3 ring. "If it wasn't easy stupid people couldn't do it", Duane. No idea what caused the canopy to blow. Any ideas?
gearless_chris replied to skittles_of_SDC's topic in Safety and Training
Sucks doesn't it? Sure does, I blew out 3 cells on my Monarch, jump #11 on the canopy. I was definitely hurt more than you. "If it wasn't easy stupid people couldn't do it", Duane. My momma said I could be anything I wanted when I grew up, so I became an a$$hole. -
Something I learned at Richmond this year was to watch out for others with the same name as you. In this case it was Jaime/Jamie. Could be done with several other names as well. Have all the riggers started complaining yet?
gearless_chris replied to SimpleJack's topic in Gear and Rigging
HaHa, sucks to be you . I'm actually thinking about trading my Vector for a Racer. That'll put me in a similar boat as you, very few riggers to pick from. At least I won't have a Cypress. Have all the riggers started complaining yet?
gearless_chris replied to SimpleJack's topic in Gear and Rigging
I don't keep both my rigs in date for the whole year. If they wouldn't have increased the pack cycle they both would be out Dec. 22nd. I'm not making a trip over the winter so I would've let them both go out. So I only had planned on packing twice this year to begin with. One of my riggers raised his rates last year to $55, wow $5 increase. My riggers aren't in it for the money, they have other jobs to pay their bills. It might be different at the bigger dz's where people do it for a living. "If it wasn't easy stupid people couldn't do it", Duane. gearless_chris replied to SimpleJack's topic in Gear and Rigging
Them riggers make way too much as it is . The good ones around here will probably like it now that they aren't going to be swamped all the time. $55 for 4 1/2 hours of work isn't very good. But I know a rigger(He packed my first two cutaways) that only charges $40, and he'll do it in 20 minutes. "If it wasn't easy stupid people couldn't do it", Duane.
