That would be true if people acted rationally. Unfortunately, they don't. If what you posted were true, there would be no gang shootouts, or shootouts with the police. For that matter, there wouldn't be wars either. Weapons are tools. They can be tools for defense, but they can also be tools for offense. I'm not saying that guns should be banned, for from it. I am saying that the old saying about an armed society being a polite society is demonstrably false. - Dan G

I don't hunt, but I know people who do. I believe there is a shotgun season that is longer than the rifle season, or something like that. Pretty sure rifles are still allowed. - Dan G

Art is, by its nature, subjective. Do you really think it's not a sad story that some kid died for no good reason? The facts of this case may exonerate the cops, but I personally think the cops go to the taser way more often than they should. - Dan G

Which election? The one in which there are no declared candidates? That would include 2014 midterms, 2016, 2018 midterms, etc. Maybe all biographies should be suspended because you never know when someone might decide to run for office. - Dan G

That makes no sense. Getting paid is not material. Why did he feel the need to release information that had nothing to do with these supposed murders, rape, etc. that you seem to know so much about? And what rape are you talking about? Or did you just throw that in because it sounds really bad? Great. There are a lot of better ways to do that than what Manning did. - Dan G

Those, and many, many others. Are you saying that because some of the information he released made the US look bad, then it's all okay? I'd have more respect if he released only the bad stuff. The fact is, he just did a data dump without any regard to the damage it may have done. Not hero material in my book. - Dan G

I would amend Stumpy's statement to say, "If you think carrying alone will keep you safe, you're kidding yourself." Carrying can be part of a strategy to remain safe. It shouldn't be the only part. In other words, just because you are carrying, don't think that other choices (like where and when you travel, how you act, your awareness level, etc.) are not also important. - Dan G

I'm definitely a civil libertarian. I wish the Libertarian Party could get its act together. I haven't been able to support any of their candidates yet, but I'm hoping they form a viable alternative some day. There's an excellent article in the New Yorker this week about civil forfeiture. It is apalling. Due process thrown right out the window, with a police profit motive to boot. - Dan G
