Just because you're in college, doesn't mean you can be stupid
NCclimber replied to BillyVance's topic in Speakers Corner
True. The IDers tend to take (arguably) weak parts of Evolutionary theory and claim the only logical explanation is the hand of a higher power. I've never made any claims about ID. That doesn't change that there is very little hard and fast evidence that life spontaneously sprung from the primordial soup. When this is brought up, people respond with stuff like. or Or when you provide testimony from an expert in the field, who says "we don't really know how life originated on this planet..... we remain in substantial ignorance" people interpret it to mean Seems like quite a stretch. As I said before, some people have a hard time admitting things that go against their way of thinking while accepting poorly supported things/concepts that align with their way of thinking. -
US judge exiles a Sex Offender to Canada

Speaking of liberals, how many of those celebrities who said "If Bush wins in 2004, I'm moving to Canada", actually did so? Seems like I heard there was spike in the number of residency applications back in December of "04. Was this merely a kneejerk reaction or did a number of US citizens move north in response to the '04 outcome? -

True, but some ideas are more lacking in substantiating evidence than others. Some have absolutely no evidence at all. Like ID. I love this line of thinking - My made up theory seems (to some) more probably than others, therefore mine is the only legitimate one. Stellar logic... Just stellar -

Assuming you're talking about evidence supporting how life began on this planet... there just isn't a strong case for any theory. -
More than like, true. But whether or not to continue funding adult stem cell research isn't really on the radar. I don't recall hearing much about this field facing cuts to its funding. The issue is embryonic adult stem cell research. It's benefits (presumably greater than the adult version) is what gets bandied about. Cure Parkinsens(sp?). Repair severed spinal cords.

Actually it has nothing to do with the origins of life, but it does speak to how selective people can be when it comes to acknowledging supporting evidence in a given situation. I've noticed that too, especially with right-wingers. It's natural to think the other guy has it wrong. -

Some people cling tightly to their beliefs, regardless of how little evidence there is to support those beliefs. Many consider this a matter of faith. What is scary is how these people attack others who question those beliefs. -
I'm not claiming to know that one is better than the other, but seeking to learn how Mr Master seems to know. The links he posted a few pages back might help.

In what proportion to the investment in each? Can you not tell the difference between return and rate of return? Perhaps you can tell us the ROR for them. Or are you just stirring the pot?

I may be wrong, but more money is being spent on stem cell research in the US than any other country.

I didn't think you would offer anything. Earlier this year Nova ran a series titled "Origins". One of the series experts was Andrew Knoll, a professor of biology at Harvard and author of Life on a Young Planet: The First Three Billion Years of Life. Here is what he had to say: NOVA: In a nutshell, what is the process? How does life form? Knoll: The short answer is we don't really know how life originated on this planet. There have been a variety of experiments that tell us some possible roads, but we remain in substantial ignorance. -

There is evidence suggesting that that is not an unreasonable hypothesis. But not much. Oh, please. Is there really anything more than "this is the best explanation we can come up with" to support it? You know - actual evidence? Miller-Urey definitely stacked the deck and its conclusions haven't really been advanced in the last 50 years. -

There is evidence suggesting that that is not an unreasonable hypothesis. But there's a hell of a lot more evidence that the Duke Lacrosse players are being railroaded for one man's political gain. Some people have a hard time admitting things that go against their way of thinking while accepting poorly supported things/concepts that align with their way of thinking. -
The title is misleading. Prior to the creation of DHS the term "homeland security" was not part of our lexicon. We used terms like national security or domestic security. For the most part "homeland security" wasn't a word combination most Americans used in regard to our safety. Today, practically all uses of "homeland security" are references to DHS or it's mission. Saying the thread title is not misleading is a pedantic exercise of intellectual dishonesty.

She has a striking resemblance to Mrs. Iselin. Yes. I find that scary. -

And still, you offer your opinions on so many other topics. Guilt is not a matter of opinion, it's a matter of fact. Some legal experts might disagree, but that's really irrelevant, much like your making this a matter of actual guilt, when I was just asking your opinion. Here's another: How do you think life began on this planet? Factually, there's not a lot to support any of the popular theories. Do you have an opinion/belief on life originated? -
While many liberals view mainstream America as right-wing, they fail to realize it's not mainstream values that have changed.

I see. Saying "Rush is a turd" should be a stand alone statement? Yeah. Let's ignore the fact that both sides have their smarmier aspects. I'm still waiting for some Democrat to state "Clinton lied to a grand jury and to the American people, PERIOD!

Oops, make that 30 years. Or at least part of the last 12 years. OK, so give examples from the left that are comparable. Michael Moore comes to mind. He may not be as nasty, but he is just as dishonest. Molly Ivens?
