What to do when Jump Pilot isn't licensed???
ROK replied to JUDYJ's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I was taught that these sort of things were best handled at home. What ever happened to "don't shit in your nest?" Flame away people....It is officialy the end of an era! _________________________________________________ My father taught me that if you have a problem with someone, approach them, explain calmly and clearly the problem to them, why it's a problem, the things that could happen because of the problem, and if they give you an attitude and don't listen, proceed with correcting the problem for them. Rule #1- First make sure that there is a problem. From the examples posted, there seems to be one (legally) I've always believed in self-policing, and a large part of my attraction to skydiving is that the family keeps and eye out for, and helps one another. If you're out of line, someone is going to tell you about it. Has anyone approached this individual and said "there seems to be an issue"? -
Any sport that you do, that you couldn't hammer a 10 penny nail in your ass with a sledge hammer for the first full minute is extreme. Or, take readings on adrenaline flow and do a comparison of sports.

I jump a 190 at 1.2/1 In order to get any action out of my front risers without doing a chin-up, I either give it some toggle input first, or rear riser then transition quickly to my fronts. It allows the "slack" I need to pull them down slowly. I keep my toggles in hand throughout the process. Inevitably my canopy does start bucking due to the brake lines pulling the rear of my canopy down, the farther I pull the front risers. Beware,if you lengthen your brake lines, your canopy will flare differently, and possibly not stall when you want it to...

August 20th, 2005 41 years old. Stopped to get my best friend some tandem information for her birthday, saw Pip Redvers hook turning to land, went to the bank, came back with $2200.00, and started AFF within a week.

I believe that it was jumper number four. Igor wrote... Waved off, and reached down and grabbed "package"??? I had a strap-over.

I have an alti-2 that I can change to zero before boarding the plane (like all the altis). What this tells me is that anything that allows human corrective action will be screwed up at one time or another. I've also had to tap it to get the needle to move. I also have an Optima and a Viso. After getting used to navigating them, I love them both. I frequently watch the numbers flying to altitude and they are amazingly close to being in sync. The only "issue" I've had is when I took a look at my Viso and it read "148" after pulling out of a delta. I had set it to speed instead of altitude before boarding the plane. About half a second of sphincter contractions quickly followed

I agree. Horizontal separation is where it's at. I appreciate everyone's input. Robert

I agree. The standard question is "where are you opening at". What brought this up is I exited after someone that was "opening" 500' lower than me. I looked over while waving off and saw them under an almost full canopy. There was plenty of room due to exit seperation, but it alarmed me. I asked why they opened higher, and was told that they opened exactly where they said they would.
-
I know the BSR. So what you're telling me is that when you state your opening altitude for exit order, you are not stating your wave-off altitude? Correct?
-
In the waiting area to get on the plane, we always ascertain the exit order based on the usual. My question is, when someone says that they are opening at a specific altitude, is that the altitude that they are waving off at, or the altitude that they think they will be open. I've gotten different answers to this question, which alarms me. I've always stated my wave-off altitude. Let's say 3500'. I wave off and I'm usually under a good canopy by 2500'-2600'.

I'm 40. Leave me alone Tony. Going around those curbs at 20 miles an hour can be scary -
Transporting rig on motorcycle?
ROK replied to floridadiver81's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I do this quite often. Wearing it is not a good idea. It will throw off your balance, when that balance is needed the most. Several above have stated reasons why wearing it is bad too. I have an OD green laundry bag that I slide mine into and strap down with a small cargo net to the rear of my Road King. I lace the helmet strap through the top of the cargo net. I also keep a big black garbage bag with it, in case it rains. The net is tight and I've never had a problem. It's never moved an inch, and I do not drive slowly. -
Tandems, Hurting or helping membership?
ROK replied to thedarkside's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
From a business perspective, I'm constantly weighing cost -vs- profit situations. It's a damn disease from being in the business world so long. I ask every morning that I'm at the DZ how many tandems there are for the day. I think about the cost of the planes, maint., pilots, fuel, insurance, etc. Inadvertently, I'm forcasting the survival of the business, which in turn allows me to know that the sport I love will be there for me. From this perspective, tandems are the fuel that keeps the machine running. I'm glad to see them. They have never bumped me for tandems, and I like to see and feel the excitement of someone making their first jump. I went to the DZ for the first time to pick up some literature for my friend to make a jump. I stood there and watched Pip land, went to the bank and came back with $2200, signed up for AFF and haven't looked back. I felt the adrenaline and thrill watching that one hook turn landing, and wanted it (although, I don't do hook turns on my landings!) As far as jumper retention, I believe that there should be a little more structure and offering for the different skill levels. Regular structured classes that will group people according to their strengths and weaknesses for training. I know that organizers put people together, but more structure and direct training in groups would be nice. From what I know of the license structure, I believe that it's well thought out and a system of steps and goals that are needed. -
I have an Optima, and a VISO (for my wrist, has a log book). I like them both. It took me a while to figure out how to get into them, but it's second nature now. I'll watch the altitude change on the way up, and they match almost exactly in their readings too. L&B is an awesome company when it comes to customer service...

It always makes me wonder when someone states that "all men are created equal" or something along those lines. All men are not created equal. It's a basic fact. Although, everyone should have the same opportunities in life regardless of how they were created. Whether they make it as far as some others, is up to the individual. As far as people praying together, if that's what they want to do, then they can do it. If it makes you feel uncomfortable, deal with it. If their actions cause a loud disturbance, they need to stop, because they are then not using common social senses. If you bring a loud barking dog and tie it by the spectator area, people are going to complain. If your dog is quiet and doesn't disturb, no one will think about it. Now, if a group of Christians just crashed a plane into a building down the street, and the next day they come to the DZ and pray loudly and cause a disturbance, I'm going to freak a little. They've opened up the possibilty in my mind of it happening again. They should use a little more common sense. Prejudice is prejudice. It doesn't matter if its against an ethnic group, religion, or sexual orientation. Unless you're being actively recruited against your will, or distracted by a loud annoying commotion, you shouldn't give a damn one way or the other. The people who scream the loudest and profess equality are most often the true zealots too... As far as comparing quiet prayer together to an orgy, give me a break... again common sense should lend a little hand...

It was nice meeting you and your friend Cat. You need to be sure and come back! One thing about Florida, the weather will change for the better if you wait. Look forward to jumping with you when you get that "A"!!!! -
Tandem Skydiving Experience - really nervous!!
ROK replied to mrsvb78's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Welcome! You will be very securely attached to an expert. An expert who is well trained. Someone who makes their living taking people out of the plane for one of the most exciting experiences of their lives. If anything were to happen to you, it would happen to them also. I have the good fortune to be on the same plane as tandems quite often. It seems that the majority, if they get apprehensive, do it on the ride to altitude. Whenever I feel apprehension, I breath deep, and relax. It works everytime! Get excited. You and your husband are going to have an amazing experience! Post and tell us what it was like after you jump. -
It would suck... Lose the adrenaline rush, and do it so much that it becomes boring after a while. Tandems would be interesting though...

I have two ridge-backs that are the most well behaved, gentle dogs I've ever owned. They love children. I would NEVER bring them to someone elses home with small children though. The dogs would be in a strange environment, around strange people, and I wouldn't bet someone's life that they would remain gentle. Tell her you don't feel comfortable with the dog around your child, and be done with it. If she chooses the dog over having a relationship with you, then so be it...

Police chief fired for urging officers to stay in shape

Political correctness turns men into wimps You just hurt my feelings -
That's it. I'm just gonna vote REPUBLICAN.

Excellent! This is what I'm looking for. You give an excellent example. As Steve said, I did set the tone incorrectly before I edited.

I do see your point. I've read it. What you know is a lot more than I do about who would be right for the positions. Thanks..
