  1. It's simple. Keep track of your own group and each jumper. Solos buddy up in the loading area and check in with that person after the jump. Simple fixes kids. No need for star trek stuff here.
  2. I spoke at great length with Sid Leach, the lawyer that represented SDA. If all of the DZO's got togther in each state we could take over the domain names SkyRide has pretty easily. Thousands of them. It would just take some $$. And yes, I have a pending issue with SkyRide at the moment.
  3. Thanks Kate. I'm glad you sat in with us. I trained just over 80 Cal Fire paramedics and EMTs, plus three Mercy Air helicopter crews, on skydiver injuries, care and gear removal without cutting. We also discussed DZ policy and operations during emergencies. I will have a DVD of the first training day to send out to anyone interested. I will have them in about three weeks. Our next goal is to start a Basic Trauma Life Support training course for skydivers. It will be skydiver injury relevant and be about four hours. I'll let you know when we get it started. It will be open to all skydivers. The goal is to train jumpers on what to do and not do during that 10 or 15 minutes from the time of a mishap until trained EMS crews arrive. I urge all of you to review your EMS plans at your drop zone. If you have any questions please give me a call.
  4. It would be very simple to put Sky Ride out of business. DZO's, don't accept the certificates.
  5. Really. So you think unbuckling your helmet, with a canopy snagged on it, going through freefall, will be easy to unbuckle???? More mid air rigging. Bad idea. Prevention. Good idea. It depends on the system... the snag.... the person.... There are some snag situations were it would be easy and some not so easy. If I have a known horseshoe malfunction that is connected to my helmet cam and going directly over my reserve.. yeah I'm going to try to get my helmet off... even if I have just a few seconds to spare before hard deck, and sure as hell if I have 10-15 seconds to spare... In this post you make some assumptions about snags being easy or hard to overcome. Mid air rigging has killed many a jumper. I get the fact that you would try to get your helmet off. Anyone would. But I think you are falsely confident about getting a snag off of a helmet that isn't "cutaway" ready. You have missed many points posted here by myself and others. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I'm glad I got your attention. Really.
  6. Sure... but then we wouldn't be having the discussion about dealing with a snag then would we. People have also had their necks broken by hard openings and heavy camera setups... just like with a snag, those are extreme scenarios. ridestrong, You are probably a really likeable guy in person and would be fun to hang out with after jumping. But during jumping I don't think many people here would want to be around you in the sky. You posted a thread here a while back with your madskillz cutaway video. http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=3842554;page=unread#unread You were slayed pretty hard and continued to discount very good advice. The same thing is happening here. You are posting advice about an issue you don't really know anything about. Here's my friendly advice, because I don't want to be ruining my skydiving day patching you up sometime in the near future. Stop writing checks with your ego that your abilities can't cash. That's my 2 cents worth, take it or leave it.
  7. 1. You may be able to untangle it. 2. You may be able to remove the helmet and untangle, or cutaway if not a base jump. An extra 10-15 seconds can be quite a bit when trying to sort out a mal. Really? I don't see 10 - 15 seconds as a lot ... especially when you have to deal with unbuckling your helmet that hasn't been fitted with a cutaway system ... Perhaps I'm a slow old lady while all the young cool dudes have super-fast reflexes (i.e. mad skillz ) ... O If it takes you more than 2-3 seconds to unbuckle your helmet then yeah... you have problems. Really. So you think unbuckling your helmet, with a canopy snagged on it, going through freefall, will be easy to unbuckle???? More mid air rigging. Bad idea. Prevention. Good idea.

  9. Remember that for every fatality under canopy, there are probably 20-30 serious injuries under canopy. So to do a "canopy collision, swoop injury, landing injury" type of survey, you would need a lot of info to make it an accurate picture. Remember that only a handful of injuries world wide make it here in the DZ.com forums. And it should be an international study, since we all jump together everywhere in the world. Which should then lead to establishment of international BSR's and training.
  10. I know a lot of skydivers around the world, like many of you. I have spent countless hours patching up injured jumpers at far to many places. I have witnessed a number of collisions and seen countless landings go bad. Like many of you here, I could go on for days about the stupid things I have seen skydivers do to themselves. Hear me out for a minute or two... I think canopy collisions happen for a few different reasons. a. No landing pattern is established and no training or enforcement of the pattern. We do a terrible job at some places ensuring that people know where to fly and how to set up a proper pattern to land. b. We have so many different speed canopies in the air at one time now it is difficult to teach experienced and newbies how to fly safely in that situation. c. Too many jumpers are way too scared to land crosswind or downwind. d. Too many jumpers think the skydive is over when the parachute inflates. e. Too many jumpers think the rules are for the other guys, not them. f. WAY TOO MANY JUMPERS FLY A CANOPY WITH THEIR HEADS UP THEIR ASS. g. Some folks that are madly skilled in the tunnel are overwhelmed under a parachute. I have seen a Golden Knight and a French 8 way member collide. I have seen a VERY high time airline pilot and a very highly experienced jumper collide. We all know about Danny and Bob, and Roger Nelson. I watched two CRW team mates collide in the landing area. It's not just the new kids on the block getting wrecked guys, it's everyone. We, as an industry and a sport, have to do a WAY better job of training, continuing to educate and enforcing safe canopy patterns and flying. And think about "Experience" for a minute. I know some folks that have a few thousand jumps. All of them are done at Perris or Elsinore. Same elevation, lots of landing area at each DZ. Take that same jumper and put them on a reserve ride or bad spot at the "Ranch", or Lost Prairie. Uh Oh! Some people have 2,000 jumps and some people have the same jump 2,000 times. We have to watch out for each other. Old guys, mentor the new guys. New guys, listen to the old guys. DZO's and managers, get a plan and stick with it. Sit jumpers down that are too cool to follow the rules. Really explain a new to your DZ person the patterns. Don't just show them a blow up of the airport and say "land here". It's more than just experienced or newbies colliding and statistics. It's all of us out there. Use your head. If you aren't sure about patterns, ask. Can one of you call 911 for me, I just fell off of my soap box.
  11. I read a very fun book called "Flight of Passage" recently. Two brothers from NJ fly to California with no radio. It's light reading and a pretty enjoyable story about growing up and sons/dads/brothers relationships.
  12. Another reminder. I have room for a couple of folks on each day. Tomorrow, Tuesday, Thursday.
  13. Trading away Halak was...pretty dumb.
  14. I'd be all over it if the dates were after December. I'm already committed to a lot in the month of December with work and family. If it were in January or February I'd be a definite! Oh, sure. Stiff us in Belize, but go to the new boogie...

  16. The all inclusive booze will derail him faster than the Bahamian Government! Guys, trust me, Tikiman is on the right path to a great boogie. He has all of the angles sorted, is well connected on the island and has a jump ship close by to lease. I won't be at the first boogie, but plan on attending the next one. Good luck Tiki.
  17. And I wasn't talking about "Swift Boating" as a noun. As a verb.
  18. Written by O'Neill and Corsi? One guy that served after John Kerry and one guy that never went to Vietnam. That piece of garbage?
  19. So your saying she is gonna get elected..... Yup. She could run on the Palin/Joe the Plumber ticket and win. She could name Daffy Duck to be her running mate and win. Why? Because "most" of the people in the US of A are a collective bunch of retards. It would take way too much bandwidth to detail, but the hack jobs by the "Tea Party" and the Republicans, Fox News, etc are playing so much greater of a political game than Obama, it will lead to his demise. It's "Swift Boat" politics. I think the guy is trying pretty hard to right the ship. The USA is the Titanic hitting the iceberg after eight torturous years under GWB. But people don't get that. And all of the Socialism, Marxist, etc rhetoric is so over the top it's ludicrous. The Republicans are the party of bad ideas and the Democrats are the party of no ideas. The way we currently handle our democracy will be the downfall of America. So yeah, I think Palin will get elected. That will be a sad day in our history. She is a money grubbing dunce. Now back to the worst ever thread.
  20. When I see the Republicans all praise Reagan I just cringe. He killed labor by firing the PATCO members. He was the original "Cut and Run' president when the Marines were bombed in Beiruit. That let Hamas have some power to get rolling. He ran the National debt up with his Ray Gun policy. The Russians were already in a state of decline. The Berlin Wall was already a bad idea and the Republicans LOVE to give Ronny all of the credit for their demise. Jimmy Carter gets a bad rap because of the failed hostage crisis rescue attempt and the economy under his term. Well, the steel industry was closing in America fast, and under Reagan it went kaput. He wasn't great, but not as bad as most think. GWB, worst ever. Period. Obama has taken over our nation at it's darkest hour. Presidents shouldn't be held accountable for the economy as much as the media and the people hold them accountable for. The economy is driven by thousands of factors. Time will tell about Obama. Nixon was buffoon, but great politician. LBJ did a lot to help out the poor and civil rights in America. The war in Vietnam wore him down. He cared. GHWB, Iran Contra. Enough said. Clinton, America thrived. Right place, right time. The economy was at a great cycle in time. The age of the internet drove stocks and business through the roof. A master politician. A dirt bag personally. But the worst POTUS we will ever see in our lifetime will be the hockey mom from Alaska.
  21. The Pens signed Mike Comrie and Arron Asham. But the best thing for them is rest. They played WAY too much hockey in three years, counting in the olympics. If MAF can start stopping pucks again, they will be back in the Finals.
